The angle was that he was kind of the screwup son of JR Foley, who was an extremely hot heel at times in Stampede. JR was a comedic genius and so they sold it quite well as the Athol was a silver spoonfed rich boy. (JR was always portrayed as a millionaire type) He struggled in his matches and wore the horrible alleged "mink fur" wrestling tights that actually looked a lot like a diaper. He also shaved a mohawk into his hair, but for what reason I have no clue. I give the guy credit. He sold the idea that he was trying but underskilled and underprepared for real competition in Stampede really quite well. JR also played the disappointed but relatively supportive Dad to a tee. At times, even though he was part of a heel faction, the people would pull for him to eke out a win. One of the millions of the Harts (based on the year I think Bruce with Stus approval) ways of booking the show. |
