Those of us who have had the chance to watch her from the (near) beginning have watched a rambunctious little one grow into a slightly bigger rambunctious little one. Like all children, Mei has gone through her phases. She had a biting issue for several months until Kappa Kozo bit her back in a match at Ichigaya Chocolate Square. Mei had a phase where she pretended like she was a giant (I like to refer to this phase as when she was 'AnMei the Giant') until Hoshitango smooshed her like a strange, little, but adorable bug. Sometimes she gets herself into situations that are too big for her, like when she made over 4 pounds of spaghetti for lunch and had to call Akki for help. Like most children, Mei learns from her experiences and adapts, keeping a positive attitude, convinced that life is fun and exciting and that tomorrow will be better than ever. Matchwise, we have watched her develop from the child who had a few basic moves and roll-ups at her disposal when facing Jazz for the EVE promotion and when facing Yuna Mizumori in an Ironman match (after which Mei sadly said that "(she doesn't) have any finishers other than roll-ups") to the athlete that amazed whoever watched when she faced AZM for the High Speed Title in Stardom. Mei is able to combine extraordinary athleticism, personality, creativity, and charisma into a personality and athlete that captivates the viewer instantly. Mei has "it". Her alter-ego, Mei Saint Michel is another outlet for Mei's creativity and charisma...and silliness. Moving forward, Mei really has no limits to how big she can be, she could absolutely be among the premier female wrestlers in the world, this generation's joshi Rey Mysterio Jr. I am amazed that AEW has not signed her full-time yet. The only explanation I can come up with is that frequently when Mei appears on AEW she is kept under Emi Sakura's thumb as a non-descript lackey or designated jobber in the Killer Queens tandem. The Killer Queen persona is, basically, a child pretending to be a mean-spirited adult and, as a result, it is awkward and unimpressive, especially for those who have seen who Mei is and what she brings to the ring (or mat). If the day never comes where Mei Suruga is headlining a women's division of significance in America or Japan it will be to the considerable detriment of wrestling fans everywhere. This kid is something special. |

Mei is so much more than that, but she? s also a really fun comedy wrestler. Her recent singles match with Suzume was so good, and points to one of Mei? s strengths: she makes the people who wrestle with her shine. To me Mei Suruga is a 10 as a wrestler because every time she is in a match I know that I will feel a lot of joy. |

For a Joshi, she has outstanding facial expressions and a lot of charisma, as well as a basic foundation of acting talent. But what she does best, in my opinion, is make up for her small height, even by japanese standards, with her moveset. While others of her size rely heavily on high-flying and therefore lack variability and compatibility, she has impressively strong mat wrestling skills. If you follow Chocopro you will also see that she is already working on her English skills, presumably to have more opportunities in the future. In Japan there is probably no limit for her, but since I want to keep open a possibility of further development, I give her only the 9 points, mind you with a strong tendency upwards. btw. you messed up the gimmicks, Mei Saint-Michel is her evil twin sister and should not be confused with her. |
