Working with two of the most important wrestlers of the modern era (Punk and Danielson) fooled people into thinking this guy was great. From the racist and necrophiliac promos and disconcerting segments he'd done with Cole, this man left a black hole in AEW's product last year. Not all his fault though as TK was experimenting with his product at the time. Decent worker when ready."

Thought he was very over the top with his promos, overusage of swearing, etc., but as time has gone on I really feel he has become a lot better than people give him credit for. Capable of having a good match, obviously amazing when it comes to promos, still very young so I believe he has the potential to grow even further in-ring wise."

He really and truthfully leaves it all in the ring, and I've loved the evolution of "irredeemable douche" to "Our Scumbag" over the course of his AEW career. Wherever he ends up next, whoever's there needs to know one thing. He's Better Than You, And You Know It."

[8.0] "How come he is just only 27 years old (as of this time of writing) but performs like a 20-year veteran. MJF is a prodigy in wrestling, he is already amazing even his time pre-AEW. This guy never fazes to broke character even in public, despite kayfabe not being existed anymore. AEW is lucky to have MJF, one of the four pillars that will ensure the future of the promotion. That man is one of the most brutal trash talkers in the ring; insulting his opponents and bragging how great he was are one of the incredible things he's done on the mic. In-ring, he has solid fundamentals but can be brutal psychologically. He has this different aura that although being hated, you are still appreciating his work. It goes to show that he is truly passionate of his craft. MJF's character is a mixture of Randy Orton, Alberto del Rio and The Miz and he upgraded it. As a babyface right now, he is not impressive as he is a heel. It doesn't fit him to be a sympathetic type of guy. Seems to me that MJF is born to be a heel, I just hope he can revert back to being a heel soon. Overall, one of the most valuable guys in wrestling and hopefully will witness him more for many years to come."

[8.0] "MJF is a guy who I think is both over-and-underrated at the same time in a paradoxical sense. I think he's overrated as a promo in front of a crowd, but underrated as a promo when in an isolated (backstage) setting. He's clearly got the physical chops to work an indie workrate classic but he holds those moments back to work a more old-school style where he makes small things look big, and yet I don't think he slides in the indie spots at the right times. Of those fated "Four Pillars" he outlined himself he's definitely the best overall (but Darby's a couple great promos away from matching him I think) and his youth combined with his reserved style gives him tremendous upside. I would easily say he's had the best overall AEW World Title reign so far in terms of both matches and character work (a very natural slow face turn mid-reign is hard to pull off), but I also think it's quickly becoming stale when I was still entirely on board with it a month ago, having what's probably the weakest PPV match for the title yet after a 2-month build to where he wasn't the best promo involved. I think losing the title to resolve his remaining angles without it would be best for him, and that's not just me wanting Swerve to hold it."

A heel who never gets comeuppance for his heinous words and deeds is not a good gimmick, and as a face he makes all his opponents look like jokes. If you are his fan you get a lot of enjoyment out of his dominance, but his aura comes at the expense of everyone he feuds with. Very selfish performer."

His heel promos are very samey and repetitive. He has no babyface fire and feels like a comedy midcarder instead of pulling off a heel who turned face due to the adoration and respect of the crowd. However, while those heel promos are samey and repetitive they are very good. As a result, I am willing to say MJF is an above-average performer. If someone can challenge Max in the way CM Punk did then maybe he can slide back into the 9 or 10 he's shown he can be but Max hasn't been challenged in a long time."

But for someone like me its all about his charisma and character work. He's just so entertaining. He can be silly and goofy and do dumb fun segments and he also can be mean and serious as hell. As for in-ring skills, I think he's a bit overhyped. I would rather watch a Sammy Guevara match than a MJF match. Sorry not sorry. See, he's like good on the mic but says the same thing every week which can get a bit annoying. His character work is fine though. If I ranked this a couple months ago then he would be a 10 but I think he's more worthy of an 8 right now."

His in-ring work is also excellent, his matches with Bryan Danielson and CM Punk were amazing, especially for someone as young as MJF. He is definitely the future of wrestling. But, his recent work with Adam Cole has been horrible to say the least. He's gone from being the best heel around to being a stupid comedic "loveable jerk" babyface. There's plenty of wrestlers MJF could have feuded with and put on amazing matches with (as you can clearly see by his match with Omega on Saturday! ) but instead he's stuck in this stupid gimmick with Cole. Bring the old MJF back, please!"

And I'll never buy the "he's only at 26 and so good now" argument, simply because there are 30 better wrestlers now that are under 30 than MJF. I'm 100% sure he will get better eventually, because quality comes with the experience, which is especially true for wrestling. He has foundation to build on, being great at moves and very charismatic. The entire story with Cole is the quality peak of his career, so it's maybe going in the right direction. Maybe, probably not, but hey ho."

[2.0] "Was kind of just going about some deep searching on here when I discovered how highly rated max was on here. I'm not surprised at all really, but I figured I'd lay out my massive issues with him as a wrestler and as a character. The big issue for me is how far in the wrong direction he's gone in the past year and change. MJF the heel character/current ironic babyface (being self aware is different than being good, by the way) feels completely out of place trying to have epics. They did a decent job building him out past that stretch of the punk/wardlow feuds where he got to be more of a classical kind of chickenshit heel (his ACTUAL peak work in the ring and as a character) to feel more practiced as a legit wrestler, but not only had the character not actually felt fundamentally different than they were previously, but max is also just really bad at having "epics". It's not just that he lacks the sort of spite and anger when in control that a character like him should have being given this kind of position when he was top heel, it's that he very clearly is aiming to check off the boxes on the "stuff you'd find in a prestige wrestling epic" list because he so deeply wants people to think he's a good wrestler. He'll often take these matches in incredibly confusing directions, like that stupid leg sell off of a tombstone that completely takes any attention off the person he dropped on their head and neck, only to pretty much abandon it entirely most of the time or other very ill fitting big epic tropes like his top rope elbow drop through the table (which, i get that hes supposed to be so desperate he'd do something out of character, but it never actually comes across that way in the layout of the match). He's also picked up some very over the top selling habits where it always feels like the end goal is to take note of how good at selling he is, even though it totally backfires and comes off as so incredibly phony and takes me out of it every single time I see it. Count how many times in a match MJF will be layed out flat with his arms and legs spread to a cartoonish degree (you will recognize what I mean immediately) or how many exaggerated mannerisms he'll make per minute like on a kickout or a big mid match move (the DON canadian destroyer comes to mind). He's not any less hokey as a babyface, except he's figured out a way to get cheered for taking the lazy route. I always thought he was extremely mercurial on the mic, but like, Tofu bad? Calling Juice Robinson a talentless taint and trying to recover from how bad the reaction was by invoking antisemitism? It's really just another symptom of the American Prestige Epics being the most praised work after that big NXT run and that's sort of the sticking point with MJF: it feels deeply confused. When he's on and unified in what he wants to be, he can do great work like in the punk and wardlow feuds. But since then, he's wanted to be the cowardly, gutless shit heel who also has 67 minute title epics. Now he wants to retain all those same qualities and be some kind of valiant post-modern babyface antihero and he doesn't want you to think about anything besides how cool and good and interesting he is the entire time even when he comes across as so god damn phoney at all times. He's quickly become one of my least favorite wrestlers in the world right now and is maybe one of the most disappointing wrestlers in the past 10 years. Don't wish any ill will to him, but I wouldn't be mad if he jumped to the wwe instead."

However, his philosophy of pandering to the crowd, cheap pops, and proudly declaring that he doesn't need to go hard in the ring to be a success (even though he can) currently holds him back from becoming a generational talent. His promos are meandering, repetitive, and often high school levels of insults. His babyface run has shown him being outclassed on the mic by more mature, more concise veterans."

The other major positive is that he has nailed his character and on his current face run, he has made it believable within the realms of his established persona. His major downfalls is that he often has incredibly poor instincts and needs to be tightly booked and directed. MJF is AEW's biggest success story and a result of consistent booking paired with a performer who is at least good at everything and downright amazing at a lot of them. Charisma, promo abilities, comedic timing, those are the sports entertainment skills that brought him to the dance. But being a student of the game, a great storyteller in the ring and his focus on "the little things" are what make him a compelling wrestler to watch as well. His presence in AEW took the company to new heights and I would say his booking is the best in that company. I am really glad that he is AEW World Champion because he made the title feel like a grand price again (Page reign was boring, Mox reign was barely a reign and Punk barely held it) and has constantly shown up every week and always finds a way to entertain the people. His best quality is obviously his promo ability and it seems he was just born with it yk, the way that he can get a lot of heat or cheers in a flip of a switch is crazy. He held his own in promos against CM Punk (I would argue he got the better of that) and it always enhances his storyline. His character of being the so-called Devil is portrayed perfectly since he has that final boss feel in the AEW Roster as expected of a world champion. He is no slouch when it comes to the ring since he is actually great at that. His signatures are brutal and his technical skills are very good and when adding his heel mannerism, his matches are even more watchable. I will not put him as perfect just yet since he has gotten a little inconsistent but he is still by far the one young wrestler that I am very sure of will go places and take professional wrestling to a whole new level in the years to come. Bow Down to the Devil. The Devil wants his due."

Many critics of MJF will say his promos just sound like an edgy mark or Corny fan tweets but personally I think he is gold on the mic and the best at talking in the game today. His feud with Punk which is still unfinished was amazing and will be something wrestling fans look back at and talk about for years. His Ironman match with Bryan Danielson is a work of wrestling gods. You may not like MJF or have heat with him for some of the comments he makes but that's the point of a heel wrestler. His matches with Adam cole, Bryan Danielson and the pillar 4-way clearly Indicate that. In addition to his skills he's got a grasp of how pro wrestling works, dude's clearly doing his homework also its rare to see wrestlers who follow kayfabe like whenever you see him he's always in his character not to mention the time he stayed 2 months underground because of it, and when the devil returned at All Out 2022 everybody was cheering for him and all this while being a heel and that's few of the many things to love about him."

The feud with Punk is the best ever in my books and showcases all of his story telling abilities at their best. In then there is his in ring talent. He does not wrestle often, and it doesn't matter. He delivers every time. Darby Allin, CM Punk, Wheeler Yuta, Jon Moxley, Konosuke Takeshita, Bryan Danielson and the four pillars four way showcase his skill to do any kind of match. A mid card ppv match which steals the show, a brilliant TV Openers and Main Events, a bloody hardcore grudge match, a 60 minute classic and a high paced multi man. At times he feels almost too desperate to play 2 different types of villians. He goes back and forth between the old school (and there for at this point a bit generic) heel who is coincided and spoiled and genuinely thinks no one can be better at him at anything, or he wants to be this scorned evil chikensht heel who was wronged so much as a kid that he has to be a villian. Its too conflicting and while I would like to admire how he lies and makes things up for attention as part of his character, WAY too many people think its brilliant, people give him flowers way too much, the audience has ruined an angle because they cheer for him for a few minutes becuase they think they are in on the joke and Max has even talked about how that has fueld him to try and find whats the worst thing he can say or be so people will STOP cheering for him. So part of my appathy for his work comes from how desperate some smarks want to be in on the joke with him and only him for some reason. They dont do this when Kenny is a heel, or with Christian Cage or Jericho. He's the only heel that gets cheered some times and it really destorys his potential because then he gets fixated on coming up with some awful thing to say for 20 minutes and has some what given up on wrestling. While his match with Bryan was one of the best in AEW history, he's also only wrestled about 50 times in the near 5 year history of the company and that is genuinely a massive detrement. I dont like wrestlers who barely wrestle, he doesnt get a pass. He's got a long way to go in my opinion but its likely to many he's already made it. He either sets out labors for the baby face wrestler to overcome and we spend weeks listening to him yap while the hero valiantly struggles but perseveres and gets to fight him in the end. Or number 2, he calls his opponent poor and worthless then has a match where he wins with his magic Mcguffin ring. He's a better wrestler than people give him credit for but his last truly great stuff was with Wardlow and Punk. MJF has used large portions of his promo's subject matter to talk about how he will be in WWE when his deal is up, this constant reminder that he wants to leave the company for something better is a terrible idea, and he gets jeered for it but when you purposefully tell people there is a better option and you'd rather be somewhere else especially given how AEW's backstage environment has been exposed as less than ideal atm it really turns people away rather than riles them up. He talks about leaving all the time and when he's not it's typical heel stuff like insulting the crowded city or calling his opponent a drug addict, stuff anyone can do. Since he very rarely wrestles we get to hear him talk and omg he just says the same thing over and over again. The Jericho feud was insufferable, I had hoped Punk would curve his bad habits but this Danielson feud has proven he hasn't learned a thing. MJF works best as a saboteur, someone that infiltrates then betrays you when you have nothing left to offer him, when he's not doing that it's..... yea not very good. The Punk stuff was great though! In fact, a lot of my frustration with MJF is that we could see how low he could go without doing the same shit he had done before, but he's yet to reach those heights. Another problem with MJF is that his heel performances are quite..... performative in that he comes off like a guy playing a rich douche but not actually being one. I don't buy his role and this was exposed by Punk in their first promo battle, he can be articulate and clever, but he doesn't draw upon anything to really bring something believable to the table, and he really says a lot without really saying anything; which is fine when your coasting but when faced with someone who could take you to task (CM PUNK) I felt bad for MJF. It wasn't until later when the Punk feud got going that I really believed in MJF as a top guy. His matches fit the feud and he was operating at a high level with the best. However like I said before he's yet to operate at that level since that point. Honestly just watch the Punk feud and see his progression and you'll understand what he's capable of. As of now, he's operating at a low level as champion and I have to score accordingly."

Everything so far has pointed to someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to psychology, which is easiest to do with the classic wrestling heel archetype. It's been so long since we've had true heels or babyfaces that this sort of approach is refreshing. The irony being we're booing him not because we hate him, but because we like him. They said wrestling was postmodern and I guess they were right. Also refreshing is his steadfast commitment to kayfabe- it's honestly astonishing to me that no one else is doing this, the time seems right for it. In the past few weeks we've seen how powerful that commitment can be- is he really serious about leaving AEW? His boss can't rightly tell him to stop saying this stuff, because it's stuff a guy like him would say. No one can tell when he's working. The mystique is back due to kayfabe, but of course in a postmodern twist- we assume everything he's saying is a lie rather than the truth. Like they used to say in the old days, if you're not sure if it's a work, then it's definitely a work. Solid in the ring but more seasoning would serve him well. Probably the best promo working today. I can't wait to see where he is in five years. E: I'm upping to 8 now that he has a world title.

His whole character represents the perfect cowardly heel archetype, but he's constantly booked as a cool guy heel who always gets the last laugh through cheating or selling none of the match and cutting a "scathing" promo on the way to the back or the next night. It's not enjoyable to watch his feuds because you know any comeuppance he gets is absolutely underwhelming compared to what he puts his opponent through in the storyline. His wrestling is serviceable, but most of it is just by-the-numbers wrestling and heel work with a rare good match now and then when he's actually forced to mix it up and do something different. He's rewarded for doing this bland, repetitive character and booking everywhere he goes, however, so there's no reason to show progress or growth to change it up. I have seen this same tired schtick from MJF for years now and I simply have no interest to watch him get beat up or even cut promos anymore."

He genuinely might be the best talker in wrestling history, based solely on the fact that he literally never stumbles over his words or in any way undercuts his delivery. He's completely confident and smooth whenever he's on the mic, which makes his promos that much more compelling because he then genuinely comes off as someone with conviction behind what he says. He's also just one of the absolute GOATs when it comes to portraying himself as a detestably self-absorbed heel, with everything from his facial expressions, his gestures, his posture, his tone, his use of space, and his outfit all screaming "I have delusions of grandeur and I genuinely think I'm better than everyone". Even the most highly respected talkers going back to the 70s would suffer every now and then from either stumbling over their words or coming off as too cheesy on what they were saying, but MJF has somehow perfected both. He's so incredible of a talker that it's almost as if he was concocted in a lab, perfectly designed to be a mega wrestling heel. For a long time it was assumed that MJF was a pure "character worker", and that he couldn't wow fans with his in-ring work like many of AEW's other top stars did. Over the last year, though, he's proven to be a great seller, quite intelligent with the psychology he chooses to employ, and more than capable of working the fast-paced 'explosive' style alongside the more traditional "epic match" wrestlers in the company. This guy really just has it all. His in-ring work will probably never reach a truly amazing level, but if he just maintains it where it is then he could easily become a through-and-through great wrestler. MJF should absolutely win the AEW World Title some time in the next 2 years, and he should have a monstrous reign once he does. I would love that, and it would allow him to finally prove himself as a top guy."

When it comes to his in-ring work, he can be very poor or simply great, he's not consistent when it comes to that. He can't carry a match, but can do a good job with the carrier. Having seen some of his work, I can say that this is justified. He has a natural arrogance to himself that makes him well-suited to be a heel. It also helps that he is quite good in the ring, utilizing old school psychology and a more conservative in-ring style than much of his peers. All this helps to create a unique, almost WWE-esque performer who in theory can be a top-tier heel. There is one major flaw I've noticed from him however and that's his usage of overly edgy insults. While the occasional jab can help create a level of shock value, an over-usage of this can lead to it becoming cheapened and lacking of his value. Regardless, I still think MJF has the tools to become a major success in the wrestling industry. A very old school-style heel, surprisingly funny at times, and one of few to keep their character 'switched on' at all times. As a wrestler, he's fine. Understandably, heels usually don't have as many moves in their arsenal because the point is for them to be as unlikeable as possible, and that's hard to accomplish when they're pulling off Ricochet flips and the like. However, the problem with MJF is that his character takes away from what he is capable of in the ring. In other words, when I think of MJF, I don't think of a 5-star match, but rather a 5-star promo. I like that A LOT & I wish more people would roll that way. The rich snobby gimmick feels a little basic & I'm not the biggest fan of that, but he's proving to be great on the mic & vicious when it comes to his insults. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him."

MJF has been booked by many major promotions like CZW and Beyond, and since I last rated him, has signed a contract with MLW. I said he was going places, and he already has, but I don't think that's it for him just yet."

HE's also naturally charismatic, and the perfect cocky, wealthy entitled sort of wrestling you love to hate. That being said, there's definitely some favoritism on this page. I have a feeling that most of these 10s were put there by people who know MJF. He isn't anywhere near this level yet, since his matches need more work put into storytelling, and less on spots, but he has time to grow, develop, and show his fullest potential."

He is so charismatic and CZW trust him to put the CZW wired title to him. He mic skill is great and his match surprisingly very technical. I can't wait to see the progress of this young man in many years."
