This is only the second night I have seen of G1 2024 and I enjoyed both of his matches. My favorite part of this one came early on, when he slammed Sabre into the crowd, then they decided to throw all the chairs aside and have a striking contest. It made me laugh. Seeing the Japanese fans scramble to get out of the way always makes me laugh, to be fair. |

He looks odd and hes not a high-level worker, but every now and again, hell have a match that stands out on these cards. The random building-wide brawl he had with Jon Moxley in this building last year, the great G1 match he had with Jay White in 2022, his systematic destruction of Tetsuya Naitos knee in the 2021 New Japan Cup. Hes not going to fill notebooks, but hell give you a couple of really interesting matches throughout any given year. Thats how I would describe this match with Zack Sabre Jr, as really interesting. These two traded judo throws, randomly started kickboxing in the middle of the crowd, and grappled on the ramp. There was no telling what these two would do next, and it was a lot of fun to watch. Sabre fought his way out of the Spinning Eliminator to hit the Zack Driver and get the win, kicking off a tournament that many fans believe is his to win. |

The story of this match was O-Khan trying to prove he could go move for move with one of the best wrestlers on the planet. This match felt real, as both men were constantly finding holes in the other's offense. A rough match but in a good way as both men were struggling for the advantage. O-Khan is not a wrestler whose matches I seek out, but with the right opponent, he can definitely hold his own. ZSJ is just the best, mashing his technical prowess with the style of every person he wrestles (& my pick to win the whole thing this year, which makes the story of this being his last G1 if he can not get it done even more impactful). The highlight was the finish, as ZSJ had suffered in the Iron Claw and was about to take the slam, he manages one last counter with a DDT and holds on and rolls through to hit the Sabre Driver for the 3. If this was a Harry Potter grade, I would give this match exceeds expectations. ***1/2 |

It was extremely physical and rough around the edges in a way that Zack's matches rarely are. Instead of tying his opponent in a pretzel, Zack spent much of this tossing O-Khan around and subsequently being tossed around. You could see the exhaustion in both competitors by the end. I love when wrestlers are willing to take a swing on a match that doesn't fit the typical New Japan G1 match format, as these shows can sometimes get repetitive with everyone trying to do a 15-20 minute version of a New Japan main event style match. I am going to see 30 matches over the next month with a perfectly fine build to a back-and-forth closing stretch that features some cool counters of signature moves. Give me more of these atypical matches in my G1 shows. |
