Everyone got a chance to shine and show out but in particular Benoit and Shelton Benjamin really stole the show here. Both guys were awesome and gave this match some life. Edge winning was definitely deserved and kickstarted his run to the main event. A classic 4.25/5"

Although I find it fitting for Edge to continue his role as the 'ultimate opportunist' I felt like he could have done way more in this match to earn that win, considering what he's done before."

Shelton shined as the match's MVP. Liked the finish with Benoit climbing looking like he would win only for Edge to come in and steal the win. Right winning looking back in hindsight."
Scott Bailey wrote on 15.11.2023:
[10.0] "Still a classic match to this day. You could argue this is a bit of a spot fest, but it's also a very high workrate match with a great combination of wrestlers that all added something special to the match. It's most remembered though for an all time great performance from Shelton Benjamin which included the famous T-bone suplex on Edge from the top of the ladder and to be honest I actually thought the spot where he ran up the ladder and clotheslined Jericho was just as good! Kane also had some great spots and took a lot of punishment and Benoit's selling of his arm was really good and I legitimately thought he broke it. The diving headbutt off the top of the ladder, busting himself open in the process is one of the most difficult things to watch when revisiting this match. Edge's win came off as very opportunistic and that ultimately suited his character very well. The Money in the Bank concept has been done to death these days, but this match was still something very special."

[8.0] "Very good and well paced match with fantastic work rate and performance by almost everyone except maybe Kane who only looked good when getting slapped by Christian and Edge. Shelton Benjamin shines pretty bright throughout with the majority of the better spots, but the highlight (perhaps lowlight looking back) is the incredibly brutal and impressive diving headbutt by Benoit. Following that with fantastically sold chair shot and drop from the ladder, its a bit hard to look back on without cringing. Perhaps still a great reference/bench mark for all modern MITB matches. You could argue the long rests for some guys detracts from the match psychology/realism but the match action and flow is so perfect its hard to really fault it for that."

[9.0] "Like the first hell in a cell and "first" ladder match in the wwf, the first money in the bank match sets the tone and bar which all others are judged. Four of the best jr heavyweights of all time at their peak, an over-achieving shelton benjamin, and KANE make for an extremely fun spotfest. It suffers from what many multi-mans and ladder matches would suffer from in coming years- specifically guys "dying" outside the ring for long periods, but they navigate it quite well in this contest. No big timing errors that are common to ladder matches. It helps having four of the greatest ever in there. Nothing looks too planned, nothing looks too botched, everything occupies that spontaneous, chaotic, and dangerous feeling a great match has."

[10.0] "The first Money in the Bank Ladder Match, and still one of the all time best. I think the only one that comes close to match for me is the Mania 23 one two years later. This has all the crazy spots you want and has Shelton Benjamin's most innovative and famous spot that is still in the WWE games to this day. I loved how much of a chickenshit Christian Cage was in this one, him having Tomko help him up the ladder is so good. I feel like Edge's win came out of nowhere, and I personally would've had Christian go over, but it helped launch his career as a main eventer."

[9.0] "Nope, it's not the greatest MITB match ever for me. But, I would be a fool to say that it wasn't entertaining. The standard-bearer against which every MITB match that followed would be compared to after setting the standards so high. Everyone talks about Shelton's performance, and for good reasons, but don't forget about Kane and Benoit, who also shined brightly in Los Angeles that night. Christian, Edge and Chris Jericho were excellent as always in Ladder matches too. Even after all these years, it is still a blast to go back to it. But, I just wish the ending sequence was done better, as it felt a bit anticlimactic. But still, this match, plus the winner being Edge, helped to put MITB as an annual tradition."

[10.0] "I'm not sure if this will stand out as much to newer fans, but this felt like a really groundbreaking match at the time. Shelton had an incredible, breakout performance that redefined what people thought was possible in ladder matches and would go on to inspire countless future matches of this type. Outside of the high spots, there is a really strong sense of physicality in this match as well, largely due to Benoit who literally splits open his stitches (he was previously busted open on RAW) doing a crazy Diving Headbutt off a ladder. He also sells the finish masterfully. Even Kane as the token big man was something that was pretty new for ladder matches at the time. Everybody feels like they have a part to play in this match, and they all execute their roles perfectly. It isn't quite Razor-HBK or the initial TLC matches, but this is still one of the greatest and most influential ladder matches in WWE history."

[7.0] "This was a bit of a throwback to late 90s and early 00s WWF's legendary multi-man tag team ladder matches, and it ended up being a pretty good match. It was indeed entirely just a spotfest, and it had the usual limitations that come with multi-man matches and also ladder matches, but the creativity of some of the spots here was undeniably impressive. Everyone got time to show off their stuff, whether that was in the form of just hitting a bunch of their finishers and signature moves or in using the various ladders for a lot of (somewhat) painful-looking attacks. Some spots with the ladders were definitely overly choreographed, but some were also indeed very impressive, most notably Shelton's various stunts (his ladder run spot was especially crazy). It was a shame that the match ended rather anti-climactically, not just because it was Edge that won (although that was also disappointing), but because there just wasn't much tension in the lead-up to him winning. ***1/4"

Shelton got some nice shine in this with a T-Bone suplex off the ladder, the clothesline to Jericho to take him off the ladder. As for the action, that was incredible too. The 5 of the 6 competitors are masters of the ladder match and know exactly what is necessary to put on a fun and high-impact match. Then you add Kane to the mix, a brilliant monster who could keep up with that style, and he provided an awesome element to make things even more exciting. There's not much here in terms of psychology (aside from character work) but for a spotfest, it's one of the best ladder matches ever."
cactus wrote on 14.05.2021:
[8.0] "This was an exciting spotfest, with an unrelenting pace and a responsive crowd who pop for every big moment. Benoit tries to sprinkle in as much psychology as he can into such a match by having his shoulder worked over, limiting his ability to reach up and grab the briefcase. He misses an Air Canada from the ladder and the visual of him bloodied-up hardway and violently convulsing is rather haunting. None of the spots are particularly innovative, with the exception of Shelton's incredible ladder run-up, but everything moved at just the right stride and pace and it made for an incredible moreish watch."

However at this time, this being a fresh concept you could feel that energy off the crowd for this. Everyone got great shine in this match. Did wish they replaced Kane with someone else but other than that everyone played there roles well especially benjamin. I'm generally OK watching back Benoit matches but watching the headbutt off the ladder and then him bleeding was pretty unsettling. Right choice of the winner here tho to set up a fantastic career."

The six competitors truly looked like they wanted the prize that meant everything and crafted a match with a perfect balance of athleticism (Shelton), power (Kane), entertainment value (Christian), hunger and innovation (Jericho), incredible selling (Benoit) and careful planning (Edge). Not only where the diverse spots incredible, but they were also meticulously set-up, letting the crowd anticipate and savor every great moment. This is an incredible execution of a neat concept, which create a new plot device that is now a standard part of wrestling lore. Truly remarkable achievement."

[10.0] "excellent match. Lot of action and lots of great spots. All the men went after each other. They all went after Kane at the beginning and worked to take him out. A nice spot early on was Christian hitting a plancha to four the men on the outside followed by Benjamin hitting a great tope con hilo to the rest of them followed by Kane jumping to finish it off. Jericho had control by hitting everyone in the ring with a ladder and Benoit followed in a German suplexed him making the ladder fly. I thought it was really nice. There was a story of Benoit's arm being injured in the match after Kane smashed the ladder onto his arm. Benjamin had a nice spot with Edge where he countered a spear into a flapjack into the ladder and followed with a stinger splash. There was a great image of all the men except Kane on top of ladders fighting and eventually all of them fell off. The last two were Edge and Benjamin and Benjamin hit a huge T-Bone suplex off the ladder. Benjamin is a bit of a star in this match as he did another excellent spot when he ran up a ladder and clotheslined Jericho off. I kinda liked how Christian used Tomko to get to the top of the ladder. Benoit hit an awesome diving headbutt from a ladder. His face after, having his stitches ripped and a bloody nose was great. I loved seeing Benoit viciously headbutting Kane off the ladder. Benoit's injury played into the finish. Edge was really smart and hit Benoit in the arm with a chair and won the match."

The only thing I have against it is the Benoit headbutt sequence is hard to watch, but some seriously wonderful bits of action and cool visuals in this match. Benoit's selling in particular is out of this world, it must be said."

This match had no clear structure or any psychology at all, just a bunch of stuff thrown together. When guys are completely overselling, they aren't selling at all. What makes the whole thing worse is that it was built on repeat spots, so as far as wrestling goes it didn't even being anything new to the table. Shelton Benjamin showed great athleticism in this match and in my opinion was the star of this match."
