902.02.2025OwenEdwards10.0Incredible stuff. Hansen wins after a second Western Lariat, this time to the back of the head, but this builds Kawada incredibly, and either result is plausible. Naturally, the offence sell here is just that both stiff each other tremendously, everything is hitting hard, both guys bump. There are lots of other things "inside", though: Kawada just has incredible energy on comebacks, he starts off like an Olympic sprinter; the crowd is in flame; Hansen starts throwing out insane offence like he never does in AJPW, like a dropkick and a middle rope suicida, he's so desperate to put away Kawada; Kawada's facial acting is, as ever, the best in the business; and then, at the end, Hansen - he looked old at the start and looks ancient now - staggers away, just about remembering to pick up his bullrope. The cowboy wins this time, but sunset is here. 5/5

1616.10.2024Fifth Pillar10.0Kawada has Hansen on the back foot for the first time and of course that makes The Lariat doubly dangerous. This one truly stands the test of time as a high watermark for ultra-stiff, believable brawling. They just beat the ever-loving shit out of each other with some horrific shots to the head, body and limbs. The subtleties are superb, but if you need highlights, check out Hansen's freight train tope suicida or the expertise with which they tease the possibility of Kawada surviving the always deadly lariat ****3/4

1905.09.2024danzitorock8.0Just like their previous encounter this is an incredible brawl, with a lot of stiff moves and two guys trying to hurt each other the whole time. But unlike most people, I think this one is pretty equal or even worse than their last bout, the middle part here is really slow and average, but at the finishing sequence the match definitely picks up, and we have a lot of thrilling moves, like that Hansen lariat where he falls of the ring, my favorite spot of the whole thing - {***3/4}

3419.10.2023ArmyOfNada10.0It could be argued that this match is a little bit unfocused and lacks the structure to make a truly great match; however, there's an exception to every rule, and this is one of them. An absolute masterpiece of violence that makes up for what it lacks in structure with sheer stiffness It's pretty much exactly what I'd want and from these two, and they deliver it in the best way possible. The ending sequence is amazing and takes the match from the 8-9 range into the full 10. Masterful pro wrestling!

4410.06.2022tommyyy17147.0This would have probably worked better had some of the middle portion of the match been shorter but when this match hits it really hits. The striking is great for the most part and Hansen's tope and lariat that sends himself out of the ring were amazing - ***3/4

6125.05.2021cactus9.0A hellish brawl, with some excellent selling from Kawada. I agree that the first ten minutes felt directionless but once things are more controlled, this was ace! Hansen is as stiff as ever and even hits a freakin' suicide dive! The contorted face Hansen makes once he's locked in the Stretch Plum really sold the move's danger. Kawada seems to not care all that much for his well-being as he takes a lot of stiff strikes and spikes himself on his head when he's bumping. Hansen hits a Beat Head (a Smackdown 2 reference for you) and Kawada sells it like he's been Backdrop Driver'd! Kawada shows a lot of fire, but it's not to be his night as Hansen is able to score the win with a brutal Western Lariat.
6203.05.2021The Beholder9.0This match started out with fire as Hansen charged Kawada before the announcer could even announce Kawada's name. The brawl spilled all over the place, but then the match slowed down quite a bit until Kawada got himself back into the match by reversing a suplex that would have landed him on the concrete into a suplex of his own on Hansen on the floor. As the match wore on the shots got stiffer until Hansen hit a lariat so vicious that Hansen's own momentum carried him to the outside, so he was unable to capitalize. However, it was just academic from there. Kawada got a few more shots in, but he was selling it like he was out on his feet, and pretty soon a vicious lariat to the back of Kawada's head put him away. A great stiff brawl, but the slow sections might make this seem a little overrated. ****1/4-****1/2
6325.03.2021Mizzle Assault Ant10.0Just a brilliant match, you aren't likely to find a more hard hitting, gritty, all out match than this one. And not just the offense, the selling! Some truly brilliant stuff here.

6903.07.2020BillyHoyle7.0Genuinely surprised to see that this has a better reputation than their 6/5/92 match, because that seems clearly superior. This lags in the middle but has a hot start and a hot finish so I guess I get it. Plus Hansen lariats Kawada so hard he himself flies out of the ring, so that's pretty dope.
7028.06.2020cjm5505067.0A stiff ending attempted to make up for a very very slow middle that brought the match down for me, though the ending howitzers that were being fired by both competitors was so much fun to watch.

7214.03.2020Makai Club 9.0The match took awhile to invest me fully into the match, if I'm being honest with my criticism. That's not usually something I need to deal with but there was just something that wasn't sticking for a bit. Then the match hooked me suddenly, and from that point forth, the match was great. Naturally with two of the most stiff wrestlers of the era, this was super snug and stiff with the strikes and submissions being displayed. Hansen would throw downward slaps that looked so brutal and he hit a killer dive that had so much force behind it. It was awesome just watching the two beat the heck out of each other. Kawada himself brought the heavy strikes with the big slaps he threw and Gamengiris. Kawada's selling at the big moments was huge. Loved the lariat that was hit with so much speed that Hansen fell out of the ring, saving Kawada a few more minutes. Great match barring a few moments of indifference. ****1/4
7308.03.2020Dragon Fighter8.0This started off with a nice brawling. But then it dragged as both of them slowed down and the momentum was ceased. However, the final 1/3 was very good with a lot of stiff work from both men who were well-known as great brawlers. A lot of moves, strikes were exchanged here and crowd was very excited about this. If the middle section was a lot hotter than it was, it could have been a classic. Still a very good one overall.

7719.08.2019British Viking10.0This was a brutal, brutal match. It was very hot right out of the gate with Hansen dominating Kawada, it slowed down a little in the middle section, but that is definitely not a criticism as it remained very engaging leading to the finish with Kawada continuing to show fantastic resilience to the bitter end. ****3/4

8818.02.2017Jobbs10.0Such a physical match between two all-time greats here. Really intense from start to finish and this had some spots that certainly took me by surprise especially seeing Hansen pull off a Tope Suicida. Crowd was totally into this and this is more of an underrated AJPW classic for sure. (****3/4)
8910.02.2017Jetlag10.0I think this is the 3rd or 4th time I've rewatched this classic. May be the baddest slugfest ever. Any basic move like a stomp or kneedrop here felt like a potential KO and the fighting over basic holds and moves was awesome. Hansen gave this masterful performance of an aging behemoth who was slowly running out of energy but could still crush his opponent. Kawada's bumping was really great as he would just get drilled into the mat whenever Hansen smashed him. God damn Hansen's shoulderblocks were amazing. I guess some of Kawada's comebacks were a little easy, but what do you want. It's 24 minutes of some of the baddest pro wrestling on film. A Top 5 AJPW match.
9028.10.2016NastyYaffa10.0An absolute war. One of the stiffest matches that I've seen, you could feel the sense of danger in the air. Not as "deep" as many of the famous AJPW classics, but my god, this deserves to be ranked right with 'em - an absolutely incredible match. ****3/4
9124.10.2016Crippler Crossface9.0
9207.10.2016Willie Jones8.0Very Brutal and very ugly. Maybe a little too brutal and ugly, for my tastes anyway. Think 4 3/4 is a bit too high. Both have had better matches but this very good. ****
9321.08.2016arrancar7.0Hansen’s bruiser style of fighting looks good here. He really looks like he’s inflicting a lot of pain onto Kawada, as Kawada sells the pain really well to the point that I’m 90% sure he was genuinely in pain. Kawada’s control period wasn’t too interesting although I did enjoy seeing him knock Hansen around and really daze him quite a few times. Kawada’s counters to Hansen’s power moves always looked pretty good too. I started really getting into the match near the end when both were trading really stiff strikes and kicks, but then the match ended without really developing on that tension, sadly. ***1/2

9505.03.2016TrevPuroFan10.0What a match. Hansen just destroys Kawada here, but Kawada shows that never say die fighting spirit here. I'd say near 5 star match between two of the best professional wrestlers ever. ****3/4
9628.02.2016JxhDel8.0Starts hot, it slows down and grows until the last astounding five minutes, after Hansen's missile lariat. Awesome brawl, Kawada does not skip a beat and shots the Battleship down several times, haning tough despite bombs. ***3/4 - ****
9725.02.2016RaviC197.0I gave this match ***1/2 - *** 3/4. Yes, this is stiff as fuck, but until the last 5 minutes I thought this was pretty boring and wasn't a good match at all. Hansen's first lariat was awesome though
9809.02.2016WhiteHummerDriver9.0Big Fight Feel in diesem Match. **** 1/4

10008.09.2014eldenaaaaa10.0This should be on everyones short list of most brutal matches of all time. Far from a technical masterpiece of course but one of the best pure brawls of all time. The stiffness will leave you in awe. The best part is when one guy is ahead, the other makes a strong comeback so there's no clear dominator. Hansen lariats Kawada 3 times and Kawada delivers those kicks harder than I ever seen him do so. Great match that proved both men were two of the toughest in the business at the time.
