111.03.2024benny5bellys4.0Strangely the copy I am watching did not show the stuff with the head gear and JJ getting busted open pre match so I was very confused to see him pissing blood all of a sudden. This match was logical but dull. I also hated the finish a whole lot more than everyone else here. Dusty looked like an absolute dumbass celebrating when he knew the referee was down and could see JJ helping Tully.

430.12.2023HFDC996.0Good match. This is probably the best worked first blood match I've ever seen, it's a perfect example of how to work a stipulation match. Even before the bell rings, the heels try to outsmart the stipulation by using headgear and Vaseline, both of which are shut down by the ref. JJ Dillon gets in Dusty's face and gets an elbow for his troubles, which busts him open and establishes that it only takes 1 blow to draw blood, which is the principle that drives the whole match. Aside from some baffling legwork by Dusty, the whole match revolves around both men trying to attack each other's head while avoiding being hit themselves. The psychology is perfect and they get a lot of mileage out of Dusty trying to land his 1st punch and Tully running away like the coward heel. The in-ring action is severely limited by the stipulation though, and what this match has in impeccable psychology it lacks in in-ring thrills, almost by necessity. The finish was creative and well executed though, it even brought back the Vaseline that was established in the pre match angle

1201.09.2023Arnold Furious5.0There is fascinating psychology at play. For starters JJ Dillon showcasing how a manager can change matches. The pre-match stuff with the head gear and Vaseline, showed they had thought long and hard about the stipulation and how to work it in their favour. Also, in taking that huge elbow pre-match, which showed the strikes effectiveness at drawing blood. Dusty himself covers up and protects his scarred forehead a lot but also throws in random stuff like leglocks. Tully does a good job of holding it all together, showing cowardice and cunning in equal measure. If only Dusty had been as creative in his title match finishes as he was here. Finding an innovative way to lose and keep face without top rope DQ nonsense.

1416.07.2023Rjepic16.0This was a pretty good match. I was a little surprised Tully actually wen over here to win the tv title but it was the right call. I thought this was booked well and was a solid affair. JJ did good at ringside here too. Surprisingly fun and logical for a first blood match; especially in a time period where everybody bleeds.

1931.01.2023Makai Club 7.0This feels big. This couldve easily been the main event over Flair vs Nikita. Is that a controversial opinion? The match doesnt even start before the blood poured from someone involved. Dusty hits an elbow of JJ Dillon, who is bloody and knocked loopy. Tully is cagey in the opening moments. He engages and backs off at the first sign of an elbow by Dusty. Dusty totally plays it up, strutting and dancing to the crowds screams. This is first blood so strikes to the head are vital and anyone could ideally do it, especially the bionic elbow which split Dillon open. Tully is such a coward and is on the backfoot the entire time and eventually even his attempts at using a shoe are foiled and used against him when Dusty hits him with it and punches him to draw blood. Tully cleans some of his blood and blindsides Dusty with coins. Dusty is bleeding and the ref happens to see him first. Tully retains the TV title. A bit of a convenient finish that I dont really like but it works for this type of wrestling. And concludes a good match where Tully showed his ass and Dusty looked like a swaggering badass. ***1/2
2027.12.2022KingsCrossing6.0Looks like this has a bit of a polarising reception here. I sit somewhere in the middle. I thought it was a good match with a perfectly logical and well executed story. I thought it was clever how Dusty immediately busted Dillon open to establish the threat for Tully to avoid for the rest of the match. The action wasn't super memorable or exciting, but it held my attention the whole way through and I felt like it all came together well to create a fairly well told story. Solid match overall.
2115.06.2022Eddie8.0Großartige Psychologie, vor allem dank den Minuten VOR dem Kampf. Das bringt die Crowd zum Beben und Dusty weiß einfach, wie man mit dem Pilublikum spielt.
2230.05.2022cactus7.0I've seen a few First Blood matches in my time, but I've never seen one with psychology as sound as this one. Dusty gives JJ one singular elbow and it cuts him up instantly, so Tully spends the rest of the match trying to dodge every single strike. One strike could cut him open and end the match. JJ also has a towel and a tub of vaseline at his disposal to aid his man. I like how neither man wasted time going for holds, as that's not going to help you in a match like this. Dusty also shows us what a charismatic man he was by sending the crowd into a frenzy by doing the smallest of jives. The referee gets knocked down and Tully gets busted open. JJ helps Tully hide his cut and slips him a weapon. Dusty is cut open and he's the first man that the referee when he comes to, so he awards Tully the victory. This had a smart finish, and they told a decent story without having to use many big spots.

3008.08.2021Kaijukyle5.0Nothing remarkable from the match other than Dillon being smart at the end. Never a fan of ref bumps leading to wonky finishes.
3115.01.2021Mizzle Assault Ant9.0If you like pure workrate, this won't be the match for you, but there's awesome energy in this match and the crowd is eating it up with a spoon, Dusty has them absolutely sitting the palm of his hand, and Tully stooges and bumps like a champion here, not to mention JJ Dillion started bleeding all over before the match even began!
3222.12.2020jajt19896.0I'm only giving it a 6 due to JJ Dillon's impressive tactics at the end otherwise it's definitely a 5, the match was just a normal match back in those days because almost every other match had bleeding in it. No weapons and the ref getting bumped.. just to much but also not enough going on
3321.11.2020JokerDeSilva5.0I have to be honest, I really don't like First Blood matches. They always seem to end the same way - the heel gets busted open but tries to hide their bleeding and point out the face was bleeding "first" even when it's the other way around, and either they get caught or steal it - and they always feel kind of soft because you have to make sure you don't make someone bleed by accident, which is the opposite of how they should go. This match was about the same, a middling brawl with an overly gimmicked finish involving vaseline, coins, and hiding blood. It's Dusty Rhodes and Tully, so you know it isn't going to be bad, but it's not much good, either.
3413.09.2020cmpunk5.0Bad. Almost a 4. A First blood match is meant to indicate that the match is going to be more brutal as you cant just get a pin you have to draw blood. But given that you can draw blood from just a strike this made both opponents incredible timid and less damaged was imposed, so the opposite. Dusty busted JJ Dillon open with an elbow that set up such timidness and made the first blood match look pissy and gimmicky. ref bumps to use a shoe when its no dq is unnecessary too.
