Mick Foley vs. Terry Funk

[8.0] "One of Funk's most well-known matches, so I had to watch it. This was all over the place as expected. A slow paced match, but with lots of sick spots. I also liked Austin's commentary which caused me to enjoy the bout more. It was also a necessary factor considering lack of response from the crowd. RIP Terry Funk"

[9.0] "I've always loved this match - it's just a crazy brawl. This is a match that lives up to the 'raw' branding, because that is the exact word to describe it. It's brutal, and the two men put a hell of a beating on one another and take some wild risks. I like the story of Foley's renewed focus and the damage he is willing to do to his best friend to get a title shot. I really like the simplicity of the finish, where Foley just keeps dropping Funk on his head until he doesn't get up anymore. The crowd is a bit quiet and it definitely takes some energy away from the match, but it's still awesome and stands out even more going back and watching it now when compared to the very sterile RAW matches that we get today."

[6.0] "Fun but also long and slow in places, austins commentary was a highlight, he really got his character over alot."

[7.0] "This was Funk and Foley having a hardcore match that felt right out of the old Smackdown games, perfectly soundtracked by the fantastic commentary of Steve Austin and Jim Ross, with Austin putting over Funk and Foley over in a way that still protects Austin's take-no-shit character. Funk and Foley fight all over the place, with them brawling through the crowd. Foley takes out of the hot dog vendor, and Funk hits an ugly moonsault off the barricade. After they finally end up in the ring, Foley is able to put away Funk in an anti-climatic fashion. I can't say this match had great structure. You aren't going to find a great babyface shine, heel control segment, or a fiery comeback here. Even with all that, this was a hell of a lot of fun."

[5.0] "Not sure why this match has the rating it does, its slow and plodding, and I was more interested in Austin on commentary than the action. Not much memorable happened within the match. Foleys match vs HHH on RAW the year before was better."

[8.0] "This was CRAZY and it was so interesting to see how Foley worked this match as now a bad guy, I loved the hardcore elements too."

[10.0] "This match is so good and how can you not like this match it is so good and both men beat the crap out of each other. *****"

[7.0] "Die Hälfte der Zeit hat man das Match gesehen und die andere Steve Austin am Kommentatorenpult. War insgesamt sehr unterhaltsam und auch die Abwechslung zwischen dem Kommentieren und dem Wrestling war gut. Funk und Foley zeigen viele Hardcorespots und machen das alles recht unterhaltsam(***1/2)."

[8.0] "I just want to add the fact that Steve Austin on commentary was hilarious all match long. Funk and Foley basically just beat the living hell out of each other brawling all over the place. Foley was trying to prove himself as a worthy contender for Austin, in order to do so, he had to beat his best friend and a man that he has looked up to. Funk's moonsault onto concession workers was crazy and Foley piledriver, and when he rammed the chair into the side of Funk when he was positioned on the chair.****1/4"

[8.0] "This told a great story with Foley willing to do anything, even destroying his own best friend in order to get an opportunity at the WWF Title. The match was filled with crazy spots and some insane brawling. Steve Austin was also fantastic on commentary, putting over Foley perfectly. A hidden gem from 1998, and an underrated classic. Great stuff from the two legends. [****]"

[9.0] "An awesome brawl between two hardcore legends. Foley's offence is great and Funk's selling is sublime, with a feeling of chaos that Attitude Era brawls captured so well. (****1/4)"

[9.0] "Funk's matches over the weeks leading up to this were lackluster, but put him back in his right element and match him up against Foley and you've got a match for the ages. Foley goes all out and Funk sells like nobody's business. There were multiple times throughout this were I physically cringed from the bumps they took. That moonsault Funk did onto the "concession stand workers" and Foley was crazy, and the brawling around the ring was insane. I almost expected Funk to kick out again when Foley finally got the pin. Aint nobody gonna be able to do what Funk did here at his age."

[8.0] "To me this was a very memorable match for both guys during their WWF runs, they went out there and had a surprisingly intense and brutal war, just beating the hell out of each other. Yes, Funk's age limited him somewhat, but he was still able to perform extremely well, due in large part to Foley's amazing job working with him. This was honestly a truly great match. ****"

[10.0] "One of my favorite matches of the Attitude Era, with so many awesome stories being told. Probably Terry Funk's last great singles match as well."

[10.0] "A great match purely on the efforts of Foley and Funk made outright fantastic thanks to superior presentation and crowd engagement."

[8.0] "A vicious brawl that told a great story. As others have highlighted the presentation around this was great and really elevated it. The backstage segments between Foley and Vince, the pre-match video package and Steve Austin on commentary were fantastic and all helped enhance the narrative. The match itself was brilliant. Fantastic brawling all over the arena and it wasn't just for the sake of it. This was about Foley proving his worth as a contender for the top title. That gave the big spots and more violent moments greater significance rather than just having them reduced to being impressive feats of toughness for the sake of popping the audience. The dance routine with Vince at the end was the insanely ridiculous palette cleanser needed after such a war of attrition. Dude Love was a kooky type of cat."

[9.0] "Only word I can describe this match is great. I don't know why it has no rating from Meltzer. For me this is one of the best matches in Raw history. We already saw hardcore in WWF at the time but this is a totally new level. Many awesome extreme spots at the ringside and at backstage. Also this match tells very good story between Mick and Terry. Steve Austin on commentary made this match even better."

[7.0] "Personalhistorisch eine interessante Angelgenheit, wenngleich aufgrund der kommenden PPV-Konstellation im Ausgang vorhersehbar. Zudem muss man sagen, dass die Partie durch den gastkommentierenden Austin und besonders seinem defekten Headset nicht unmassgeblich defokussiert wird. Trotzdem zeigen Funk & Foley ein ansprechendes Match mit einem erinnerungswürdigen Top-Spot, unter anderem auf den bemitleidenswerten Hot Dog Verkäufer. Eine klassische Begegnung - sowohl auf die Personalie, als auch auf den Zeitpunkt, nicht jedoch auf die Qualität bezogen. Trotzdem anständig."

[6.0] "War ein unterhaltsamer Main Event von RAW, mehr aber auch nicht. Habe von beiden schon besseres gesehen und der Kommentar Austins lenkt vom eigentlichen Match immer wieder ab. Nichtsdestotrotz ein gelungenes Match mit einigen netten Spots (***1/4)."

[8.0] "My god, this is amazing. Two hardcore legends beating the crap out of each other everywhere they possibly could, Stone Cold having audio issues at the commentary table, Austin attacking King. I love it."

[7.0] "Recht guter und hart geführter Brawl beider Hardcore Legenden. Leider merkte man beiden schon damals ihr alter an sodass es teilweise ein echt lahmes und zähes Match war. Dennoch waren einige der Spots, gerade der "Moonsault" von Terry Funk, wirklich schön zu sehen. *** 1/2"

[8.0] "Für WWF-Verhältnisse ein klasse Hardcore-Match mit einigen tollen Spots, gerade der Moonsault war beeindruckend. Der Ausgang des Matches war leider von Anfang an klar und auch Austin am Kommentar lenkt etwas viel ab vom eigentlichen Match, aber war gut."

[8.0] "Pat Patterson comes down and is announced as the special referee. The beat the shit out of each other all over the arena, using all of their surroundings, and generally giving the feel of a completely insane out of control brawl, with a few super awesome big spots surrounded by a bunch of brutal looking stuff. Foley goes batshit insane on Funk's head and neck with repeated DDTs, chair shots, and piledrivers on stuff to finally get the win. ****"

[10.0] "Great forgotten match. Especially considering that it was on free tv. Managed to convince the fans Foley was hardcore again, only so he could turn on them again. Probably overshadowed by the heel turn"

[10.0] "Sehr gutes Match, besonders lustig war Stone Cold als Gastkommentator, wo er dann Jerry Lawler angegriffen hatte, weil das Headset nicht ging. Zu geil :)"
