Foley's bump on the concrete and Bearer's heel turn once they're in front of the crowd add some interest but decent ending doesn't make up for 20 minutes of dragging for me"

The only redeeming thing about it is that they actually were able to make it look like an actual fight, but that's why wrestling is not a shoot - because it can be boring and awkward as hell then. The commentators for some reason decide to not say a word during this, thanks to which everything here seems laughable. The constant video problems get the biggest reactions of the match and not in a good way, plus the rules of this are unclear. I mean, couldn't Taker just enter the boiler room and then immidiately leave to get the urn? For how long did they have to fight in there? Like I said, I don't give it a 1/10 only because it wasn't a spotfest, but Jesus Christ, no more of this bollocks."

The Bearer heel turn was shocking at the time, and a huge part of the story, even if some of that context is lost over the years if we are watching this match in a vacuum. I thought it was unique, and I enjoyed the lack of commentary during the boiler room portion of the match. Whether that was a choice or technical difficulties I dont know, but still cool."

The idea to turn Bearer against The Undertaker was a good move. The idea was good as it helped support Mankind's character work."

Der abschließende Turn Bearers ist natürlich ein Schocker, wird aber im Ring dann dermaßen offensichtlich angekündigt, dass der Schlag mit der Urne schlussendlich nur noch konsequent und weniger überraschend ist."

I think maybe because they muted the crowd and the commentators and kept having "transmission problems" it put me off that part of the match. Paul Bearer's heel turn was executed excellently."

In hindsight it kind of reminded of pre thunderdome pandemic era WWE match because you really heard what was going on in the brawl. I don't know though maybe just because I've seen so many backstage brawls that were better than this now so in my mind it hasn't particularly aged well."

[8.0] "The Boiler Room Brawl could have easily been a disaster because of the unorthodox environment, but with the talents that are Mankind and Undertaker, they managed to make it one of the most memorable chapters of their great rivalry. Well, I talk a lot about the wrestlers, but special credit must be given to the production and the cameramen, who knew how to retranscribe this unhealthy atmosphere inside the boiler room. With two-by-fours, ladders and a ton of shocking moments, this was a somewhat over-the-top but fun brawl that only the likes of Taker and Mankind could pull off. Plus, they worked a match so well that watching them limp and crawl to the ring, you can almost feel the fatigue coming off of them. The selling was beautiful during this match. Culminating with Paul Bearer's shocking betrayal, this was one of those matches where everything clicked and the Boiler Room Brawl ended up helping the Undertaker/Mankind saga to reach legendary status instead of being a hindrance to the participants."

[8.0] "They did the job, make this match oppressive as high as possible, Paul Bearer's heel turn was a good idea, good bumps, however slow pacing in this match (as in all The Undertaker's matches before 1997) . Mankind got believable and it was entertaining. A stipulation not to be renewed."

But, those things added a great deal of atmosphere. The pre-filmed part was long and slow, perhaps too much so, and it doesn't really make sense why they stayed in the boiler room for so long, but it was still an entertaining brawl overall. Bearer turning on Taker was also strange, but of course lead to some interesting storylines. This was many things, but definitely not boring."

In some places, there was a lot of fussing and walking around the boiler room with punch exchanges. At that time, their confrontation was very hot and mystical and I wanted more aggression in the boiler room, the place was more than suitable for this, but the finale certainly stunned everyone and the post-match segment with the appearance of people in black cloaks carried by the Undertaker's lifeless body signified a complete withdrawal of strength from character."

Alles was Beide in die Finger bekam wurde eingesetzt. Der Verrat von Paul an dem Taker war damals schon was besonderes. Ein SummerSlam Klassiker (****)."

Yes, there had been violent matches, but not ones that took place backstage like this. Bearer's heel turn also helped this and was a big shock at the time, though you could see the signs it was coming from earlier moments in their feud."

[7.0] "Really good match that helped to set something of a standard in terms of the WWE hardcore match style in the years to come. It was also a a historically important story because it was the heel turn of Paul Bearer that shocked the world at the time. I didn't think that was going to happen, so when it did that's what people really got out of this match. Don't discredit the work in the match, though. They had a very physical brawl and it was a long match that went nearly 30 minutes. That's not easy to do. Some of it was a bit boring, but I liked it because it put over how personal of a rivalry this was and the ending with the Bearer turn was a huge moment as I mentioned. Very good brawl ***1/2"
