524.03.2024danzitorock9.0Man, what a fantastic match... this began with a qualified slow paced build that consisted on Punk working on Aries injured neck, he made a lot of headlocks as usual and tried to fully damage Aries neck, so he absolutely dominated the first part, showing smart strategy and amazing technique. Then in the middle part, Aries managed to equal things up, and applied some really nice moves that resulted in they having great sequences. In my opinion the most incredible thing about the transition to the final part is the way Punk went from dominant to completely underdog... and Aries, whose ass was getting beaten, transformed himself into a hateful and party pooper villain. The crowd played an important role in this brilliant change too, they were dead silent at the beginning but when Punk started to portray himself like the underdog they were rooting and cheering massively in his favor, insane atmosphere. The spots at the end were awesome and thrilling, and Punk managed to win the ROH Championship before leaving to WWE, which lead to a wonderful and all-timer moment with those chants at the end. This will be forever legendary - {****3/4}
623.03.2024FelipeTalksWrestling9.0[4.5*] I just did not love the match as much as I thought I would and it makes me sad. The beginning was very slow paced as always but at the ending it did not reach a level of emotion in the same way it did in the Punk vs Joe trilogy, and the crowd kind of carried the vibes with their chants and participation. It was still a very good worked match with a lot of psychology and storytelling, and at the end of the day it delivered well. My favorite part was actually the legendary post-match promo where Punk says the famous line of the greatest trick that the Devil ever pulled, in a incredibly perfect heel turn.
728.02.2024rhlgull13319.0What a beautiful goddamn match this is... The story is quite simple but it's well-told simplicity that Punk does best. Aries is the champion and is disrespected by the crowd undermining his efforts in favour of cheering for CM Punk and it gets under his skin a bit. Punk has his number for the first third, dictating the pace and slowing him down as the crowd 100% show support for the departing challenger. The New Jersey crowd were an invaluable asset to this match, booing every piece of Aries offence and cheering for every breath Punker takes. In the mid-point, Punk turns the match into a pseudo Ricky Steamboat / Ric Flair title bout and turns the clocks back with his counters and gesturing for the crowd, which shows just how well into their respective roles both man were. There was a delicate mix of old school and new school in the action that i simply adored. Such a genius mixing of genres and period-dated styles. 80's and 90's and 00's all together in thirty minutes of excitement. But the greatest bit of all is the after-match promo and the successful 180 turn pulled by the audience. He goes from the man of the hour to being called "C.M. PUSSY". Absolutely love it. [4.5]

1719.11.2023AG328.0A match that removed from context and had anyone other than CM Punk I wouldn't be a fan of but damn what a moment. 30 minutes fly by, it starts pretty slow with classic side headlock world title strats and escalates into a DVD on the apron and some guardrail bumps. Punk sells pretty well early on and keeps getting in brief strikes of hope to keep the long heat segment from getting dull. The crowd were into this like it was a pantomime with the boos for everything Aries did and cheers for everything Punk did. Punk's comebacks and offence was worked like a WWE comeback too with all of his big stuff stringed together and some kinda goofy stuff like windup punches and the exposed buckle in the corner. The ending stretch is pretty egregious with Punk kicking out of the avalanche brainbuster, the 1 count on his own Pepsi Plunge and taking the 450 only to rollthrough into the Vice but I can excuse it given it was his "final" match. The TKO, shining wizard and Pepsi Plunge combo for the finish was sweet as hell too. Not as high on the post-match promo as most but a heel turn after all of that is pretty ballsy and kicks off his short Summer of Punk run before leaving too so yeah, pretty great - ****

2806.06.2023Jman79.0This was an incredible match with a super hot crowd that are fully behind CM Punk for his supposed last match in ROH. The action in this is fantastic and I thought Punk kicking out at 1 from the Pepsi Plunge was a great moment. The promo from Punk after the match was brilliant. ****3/4

3013.05.2023Cigarette Salesman7.0Nice, but never the same removed from the context of the moment. Still, Aries doing the headstand and Punk just getting up and dropkicking him in the back of the neck is hilarious. Very generous of them to give Aries the out with the neck, and the crowd is just awesome. It sucks that Honor Club cuts the promo off the end...

3524.01.2023BradJohnson347.0This one takes a loooong time to get going but once it does (around the time Aries goes upside-down to take an awesome bump on an irish whip into the barricade) the action is great and it all leads to a good and very surprising finish. Lots of fluid technical exchanges but again in the early going it is far more rest holds. Punk could use more offensive firepower as a babyface but his selling is great and it leads to an awesome moment when he kicks out at 1 when Aries tries to hit him with his own finish. Fantastic promo afterwards.

4215.11.2022arrancar7.0Punk continues his undefeated streak of overrated 'top' matches in ROH. It was the IRL story that was more compelling here than the match itself, since it was expected that this was merely Punk's farewell match before he joined WWE (as had been heavily speculated at the time), which meant that the fans were very passionate in their support of Punk throughout everything he did in this match. The match itself was a usual Punk ROH match, with him relying on a lot of his technical work which earned him quite a long control period. As usual, his work there all featured really good technique, but it was also pretty dry, and none of his complimentary offence was impactful or creative enough to make up for that. He tried with his own versions of what he considered 'athletic' and 'cool' attacks, but they were never super impressive. Aries at least made sure to sell and bump really well to make Punk's offence look much better than it actually was, but that didn't stop me from still finding Punk's offence mostly just 'good' at best. Aries always impressed far more whenever he was given the chance to actually get control, with all his attacks having great intensity and impact behind them, plus at times a lot of flashiness and creativity (which really highlighted just how difficult it was that we were expected to get behind Punk with his far less convincing offence). Aries also did well playing up his arrogant and dickish heel side in order to elevate Punk's already strong babyface appeal, which was him yet again one-upping Punk with his performance here, this time in terms of character work. Punk's babyface-selling wasn't that sympathetic, at least not to a non-fan like me, but that didn't matter for the crowd because they were all here to give him a fond farewell because they *were* big fans, so they still rallied around him regardless of what he did or didn't do. I'll give Punk props for showing a lot of energy and being more fluid than usual when he got his 1st big comeback, even if his trademark clunkiness remained present in all his movements and attacks, and even if Aries attacks were always far more impressive. The crowd getting as heavily behind Punk and as heavily against Aries as they did is what started to make the match feel somewhat special despite the work itself not being especially so, with them booing every success Aries had and massively cheering every success Punk had. They definitely went the try-hard 'epic' route with Aries stealing the Pepsi Plunge, Punk kicking out of it at 1, and then him 100% no-selling Aries' usual finishing stretch of the punt kick to the head and the 450 splash and hulking up with his own signature moves and finishers instead. That was all exciting in terms of pure adrenaline, sure, but it was also pretty illogical and made Punk look annoyingly overpowered. I guess it was a good-feel moment for Punk to finally win the ROH World Title, but this match itself didn't do a great deal for me. ***1/4

5401.03.2022Geo9310.0Oh my god. The emotion that everyone had going into this match with this being supposedly Punk's final match in ROH. Austin Aries had so much heat every time he had the offense. Then they hug at the end and Aries raises his hand. It's a perfect picture ending after a perfect match. But then Punk starts his "goodbye speech" and what happened was for sure one of the greatest plot twists I've ever seen in wrestling. The match by itself was incredible and the story being told during and after the match made it legendary.

6210.09.2021Gonto037.0Watching 16 years later, it still is a great match but I find it a bit overrated by the community. At the beginning I was enjoying the chain wrestling and the slow pace of the match, although I think that carried on for too long. The moves sequences and spots were pretty good, but some were off the match pace and the story. This is something I found common on this era of Ring of Honor, where the wrestlers do the spots and the amazing sequences just because they want to do it and kind of ignoring the pace or the story they were telling. I don't like this idea of doing moves left and right until one is able to finish the match, but that's just a personal view of wrestling. I still recommend to watch this match, it is very enjoyable and emotional. I just think both the commentators and the circumstances surrounding CM Punk made this match a little better than it actually was.

7126.05.2021cactus8.0Up until the DVD on the apron, this is worked like a classic NWA title match, with lengthy holds building up the tension between Punk and Aries. This could have ultimately benefitted a lot by having an experienced agent whispering in each guy's ear as there are some seriously questionable moments in the go-home stretch. Punk kicking out of a Pepsi Plunge at 1 and hulking-up is dumb no matter what way you slice it. Punk's final flurry of moves at the end felt decisive and his post-match promo is legendary. Although this is a match that doesn't quite live up to its electric atmosphere and post-match, this is still a damn fine encounter.

8002.10.2020Makai Club 8.0There are a few different edges to this match. One this is supposed to be Punk's last match before going to WWE. A last hurrah. So Punk is very emotional for his entrance and the fans are itching for Punk to win the title (which looks unlikely since that's not the usual thing). But the other side of that story is that it's actually not the last match he'll have in the company and would be a catalyst for one of the most famous storylines Ring Of Honor has ever done aka The Summer Of Punk. So much that they tried to recreate it in 2011 somewhat. So not only does this have a great story coming into it, it's book ended by an even better story. Now it's time for the match itself to deliver. I thought the match was good at times. A little too much with the kickouts at the end - which sort of make sense in the context of Punk desperate to win the title on his way out and the fans were biting on everything - and there were a few loose counter sequences that didn't really work for me. But generally, this was really good. The grounded lock into the headstand escape spot was good as usual but what I loved about it was Punk quickly getting to his feet and drop-kicking Aries right in the next. Punk would spend the next 10 minutes attacking the neck as well. It was a great transition into one of the main plot threads of the match. They build up to the finish well tempo wise. I thought Aries was great at being the heel of the match, maximising Punk's face heat and making it that much better when Punk wins the match. ***3/4

8512.03.2020NastyYaffa10.0This is one of those classic ROH World Title matches + also one of the greatest moments in the history of the company. I've always loved it. The whole package -- from the presentation of the deal w/ it being billed as CM Punk's last ROH match, to the atmosphere, to the in-ring work done by the two, to the legendary post-match stuff. It's that mid-2000s ROH/indy magic that cannot be re-captured. Punk controls the first portions of the match -- everyone knew Aries had a banged up neck going into it, so Punk naturally goes after it w/ them dropkicks, headlocks, bulldogs. It's good stuff! Once Aries takes over, he definitely ups the nastiness though; that DVD on the apron was pretty sickening, and his overall work on top is really great. He wonderfully plays the dickhead who wants to spoil Punk's one last hurrah, and the crowd reacts 110% accordingly, which made it all the more better. Punk FINALLY mustering some offense in the form of that irish whip reversal into the lariat to the back of the head was a great moment after Aries' long heat segment. And talking about great moments, I do love me some well done & timed kickouts at 1, and that Pepsi Plunge one has always been a very good one. To sum it all up; like I said, I've always loved this thing, and I think I always will.

9414.04.2018Dooby9.0It's kind of funny, I thought I remembered CM Punk as one of the best wrestlers in ROH history, but looking back at this match that kind of isn't the case because he is obviously outworked by Aries here. Maybe that isn't a completely fair assesment because I have yet to go back and rewatch some of his ROH classics, but the latter point still stands true. What I will give Punk the most credit for is absolutely controlling the hot as fuck crowd. They were going nuts before the match even started, and every comeback of Punk's would be super loud with boos raining down on Aries whenever he had momentum. Those last 10 minutes in particular are just amazing as Punk gave it his all to take down Aries until he finally won. I also have to mention the heel turn promo from Punk is an all time great, ****1/2.
