They had a good match, were picking up the speed with time and left more impressive moves for last, plus there was a good face and heel dynamic and the crowd was into the match, but why couldn't Bret win by cheating or something? Once again Taker's bout is ruined by an abrubt DQ finish that leaves a poor taste in the viewer's mouth."

It's a shame to have Bret Hart and The Undertaker, two of the major stars in the history of the WWE, go for 25+ minutes and have that awful finish, but hey, hindsight is always 20/20. My rating: ***"

Some decent spots here and there and lots of solid limb work which went nowhere as the match ended in a lame DQ. This had the potential to be better than the Summerslam match but unfortunately failed to clear that bar."

Taker's surfboard into the crucifix pin was cool, Bret getting kicked into the camera man was also cool, but jesus this match is boring even if you took away modern sensibilities it's still just boring legwork with mediocre selling from Taker. Their Summerslam match was way better."

I'm surprised to see this rated much higher than the HBK/Bulldog match that closed the show, which I found more engaging TBH."

[6.0] "I encourage anyone watching this match to also watch the brief interview Vince does with Bret earlier in the PPV. Vince is hamming it up a bit as an antagonist (or maybe it's just Vince being an asshole) and it leads to a poignant moment: "I still like to believe in my heart that I'm still the champion that I always was, years and years and years ago, " Bret says. "I think the people know me for what I am, they still believe in me, " he continues, but Vince cuts him off to point out (correctly) that the fans are in fact booing him at that exact moment. Then Vince asks Bret directly: "Does it matter to you whether they like you or not? " Bret answers that it does, and, despite having worked as a heel, you can see the sadness in his eyes that he is no longer beloved in the way he once was. I was not a big fan of the methodical pace nor the bizarre finish to this match but certainly fun to see two greats go at it one-on-one in a special environment with a very hot crowd."

Not enough people talk about how brilliant Bret's DDT was. Bret drills Undertaker's neck into the mat with the move and it serves as an excellent cut-off spot. For a man not known for selling for the first few years of his WWF run, Undertaker was fantastic at selling here and I dug the small touches of him trying to stretch out the damage that had been done to his leg. The leg work has consequences as well, as even during Undertaker's comeback, all it takes is a well-placed kick to his leg to send him to the ground. Bret getting hung up in the ropes after trying to block the Tombstone was a great spot, but I'm less keen on the DQ finish that was clearly in place to protect the Undertaker. This was a great match in spite of its finish. The Undertaker really pulled his finger out here and the result is the best non-gimmick match of his career up to this point."

Even so, it was a great match, almost 30 minutes of back and forth action, and it was believable either man could win. Sadly, and in true WWF fashion, the ending was a badly contrived DQ that was a poor ending to such a great match."

[8.0] "This was the Undertakers and Bret Hart's best matchup between each other. This match was weird because at first, the crowd favors Undertaker but then they just decide to boo both of them which makes for a really weird dynamic. But in this match, we get Bret mainly working Undertaker's leg all throughout while the Undertaker sells it beautifully. These two really showed off their chemistry in the ring today and it's a shame we never got a rematch between them again. The only thing messing with this match's rating is a definite result because even the DQ finish is kind of weird.****1/4"

Technically this one is superior to their SummerSlam match the month prior, but I prefer the summerslam match for its storytelling, psychology, and spectacular finish, where this match has something of a disappointing finish. Very much worth watching though, and a great demonstration of what both guys excelled at in this era."

[8.0] "I really think this is the best match between Undertaker and Bret "Hitman" Hart as an In RIng point of view. It was not an easy one because of the weird UK Crowd and the difficulty to guess who they will be chanting for. In fact in 1997 Hart Foundation was the main subject for the weirdest crowd's reactions ever :booed in US, Chanted in Canada, it was not easy to understand how the UK crowd would have responded to the match itself. Taker played the role masterfully, first of all selling perfectly the work Bret has done for the whole match to his leg, secondly playing a different role than the one he played at Summerslam, almost being the bad guy of the match and working himself Bret Leg and arm and the chest (a body part I personally never saw being worked in a match) in fully heelish way. I loved the Match, I loved the way Taker amalgamated to Bret's style and I can consider this match as an "in ring" point of view even better than the one they had at SummerSlam, and maybe the best Bret vs Taker encounter ever in my humble opinion. I really think that leaving aside the chemistry perceptible from anyone that Shawn Michaels and Undertaker had during the corse of their carrear and that led them to some of the most uforgettable matches in WWE history, Bret is one of the best to have interacted with the Phenom during Undertaker's 30 years illustrious carrear. In fact the Hitman gave to Taker some of this best "non gimmick" matches ever and this one it is the full example. I loved the way Bret tried to escape the Tombstone (in a way that HBK will copy for WrestleMania 25 years later) and the whole match was fun and well constructed for its entire duration. Shame on the finisher, shame on the fact that we haven't had a clear winner but I can guess it was the nature of this UK PPV extravaganza that led to a not clear ending a booking decision to not stain with a defeat Undertaker and to leave the belt to Bret Hart for future encounter with Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1997. Vote: 8"
