426.12.2021jboyaquar7.0Outside the moment I thought I was going to personally witness another broken-neck at Korakuen, ie Ogawa in late '11, or an almost-so like Yoshimura from 12/30/18, I was thrilled that one of my longtime faves completed the clean sweep of Damnation and win the tournament. Tanaka went on to have a fantastic run w/ the top title t/out the first half of '20, carrying the company during the pandemic, and putting Endo over in an even better match than this mid '20. 3 1/3

1414.01.2020arrancar7.0I definitely expected more from these two, but I won't say this was anything less than 'pretty good'. We had a bland but fine start as they exchanged basic holds back and forth, and then the match properly opened up once Endo introduced the table and Tanaka put him through it. Tanaka was firmly in control from that point on, and he administered a nice beatdown with all his trademark great strikes. Endo's selling was good, but he of course impressed far more when he started showing off his athleticism and his flashy spots (excusing that majorly awkward botch on his Sasuke Special). Tanaka would deliver some great power moves and some more great strikes to put himself back in control, and Endo took his selling and bumping to another level to further put Tanaka over as a serious threat and to also make himself a more endearingly sympathetic figure in the process. It was fun watching both guys as they moved into rapid big-move trading territory, but it felt a bit underwhelming because nowadays it feels like *every* puro singles match needs to have this section, regardless of whether the story or matchup actually calls for it. Their timing and chemistry was also slightly off on certain interactions, which likewise held this section back from being as explosive as they intended. Luckily, it was at least always exciting whenever Tanaka returned to his elbows and forearms, which ensured that the finish was good. It feels played out when a company brings in an outsider and then has them win their annual tournament to set them up as a challenger, so I wasn't exactly thrilled with 46-year-old veteran Tanaka getting this push over 28-year-old star Endo. I know Tanaka is still really good (evidenced by this match), but Endo is a great talent and deserves to be pushed and utilised while he's still young. ***1/4

1931.12.2019Makai Club 8.0A pretty good way to end the tournament. A fun back and forth match. Endo going into Tanaka territory, attempting the splash for the table. It didn't reach ther third gear of being good to very good until the finishing stretch where the two exchanged some great counters and moves strung along. These two didn't seem a great styles match on paper but it worked. ***3/4

2131.12.201920SaiDa199.0The fact that Masato can still go despite all the punishment he has taken over the years is crazy. This particular match was great and the best of the tournament for me, as a tournament final should be. It was structured well and featured enough early on to keep it interesting before the finishing stretch, which was also great. Tetsuya Endo did botch the Sasuke special, however, and also sliced open both of his thighs, presumably on that table spot, but outside of that everything in this match was very well executed.

2430.12.2019Rudakov8.0Great match. Hard hitting action packed with some amazing moves and cool combinations. But where was the one big problem. Can`t say, that the match has some lack of emotions, but they were kinda wack. Tanaka and Endo just killed me with overabundance of "big moves". That was that type of match, which might be better, if wrestlers performed less spots. ****

3028.12.2019Dooby8.0Pretty great match for how not typical it was for the DDT style. I question the way Endo has been booked this year, and this match result is another question on the pile. Despite that, this was still a pretty great finale for the tournament. Not as good as the previous years final, nor as good as several matches in this years tournament, but it still found its spot as one of the better matches.
