212.04.2024TomeryKY10.0This was one of the most memorable matches from my childhood. I remember at the time thinking it was fun that Jeff was given a chance to go for the belt when he was so obviously the b-feud at the time compared to what the Undertaker had been doing on Smackdown. Thing is though is that I don't actually even remember who he was feuding with back then. I know he had a triple threat with Rock and Kurt not long after this match so I assume it must have been them. That this b-feud lasted in my memory some near 20 years later while I forgot all about the a-feud says a lot I think.

511.03.202412AMercenary9.0Agreed with the most recent commenter. The ladder concept had finally started to play itself out by this point, and I recall being very annoyed by this being announced. Then, Jeff Hardy turned in a career babyface in peril performance that rivals the best of Morton or Zayn. Two guys that I don't generally like pulled off a classic here

1705.12.2023JediSaiyanMaster120310.0Super underrated match on this site, this match really put over Jeff Hardy as a singles competitor despite losing, The Undertaker worked pretty well for his first ladder match, Jim Ross had amazing commentary in this match with his amazing "climb the ladder, kid, make yourself famous" line. One of the best matches on Monday Night Raw.

1912.10.2023Sertay57.0That's the match that made Jeff Hardy a future solo star. Great example that you can open someone a door even by make him lose. Everyone showed us something great in that match. Jeff showed that he can compete in top level. Taker showed that he can deliver even when things are not familiar with him. JR was absolutely great too. Very fun match to watch especially for a tv.

2310.08.2023elmark10.0One of the most emotional matches in WWE history and a perfect example of how to put someone over while still having them lose the match. Both elevates Jeff to a new level (which he unfortunately couldn't capitalise on) and turns Taker face or at least tweener.

2622.07.2023wakaflockaflamewar10.0One of the best TV matches of all time. It's rewarding to put yourself in that time period and appreciate the contexts of what went on rather compare to the amount of things you'd see in a current match. In a backstage promo during the show, you see this crazy kid Jeff Hardy scaling a piece of the set backstage in like 4 seconds, it's well worth checking out, he was such a one-of-a-kind weirdo back then. The story of the match is set, 'Taker dominates the majority of his opponents but in a match where quick bursts of agility could be decisive, could that charismatic enigma Jeff Hardy actually pull off the big one? 'Taker of course dominates a large portion and Jim Ross is already just in fine form that night, my favourite commentary by him in his career. Jeff's comebacks are marvellous and they really had them believing he could win in several separate moments. And what a put-over post-match. Just one of the most iconic made-man-in-defeat bouts.

2818.06.2023Scott Bailey9.0What a match this was and probably even better was the storytelling as before the match Undertaker was a clear favourite, but the ladder match being Jeff Hardy's speciality made it unpredictable. The match had some great back and forth where Jeff started the match with the advantage being able to out maneuver the Undertaker and then mid match the Undertaker took control and looked like destroying Jeff Hardy and ending his career with Jim Ross truly selling what everyone was thinking watching the match while Lawler's heel commentary probably being the more logical. It was perfect from a storytelling perspective where Jeff Hardy was just not going to give up up no matter how badly the odds was against him and when he did finally get some offense in the crowd popped huge for it. Jim Ross gets the iconic "Climb the ladder kid, make yourself famous" call, before reality finally came back to bite him. It was a bruising match with Undertaker also seriously selling the effects of the match afterwards. The aftermath where Undertaker finally shows Jeff Hardy his respect was a huge star making moment.

3621.04.2023KingsCrossing10.0I am shocked that this doesn't have a higher rating. Perhaps it doesn't resonate as much with newer fans, but everybody I know who was a fan around the time this aired cites this as one of their favourite RAW matches ever. The psychology of the match is perfect. Jeff plays mind games with Undertaker from the outset to create an opening for him to use his only two advantages - his speed and his proficiency with the ladder match stipulation. I love this aspect of the story - while Jeff is firmly established as the underdog, in some respects it is the Undertaker at a disadvantage (they show him to be concerned about the stipulation earlier in the night). It's a very interesting dynamic and a balancing act that you wouldn't often see. Hardy is quickly overwhelmed by the strength and size of The Undertaker, but the Deadman's ego and sadism creates an opening for Jeff to do the unthinkable. When I rewatch this match I find that I can remember just about every single spot, because they all have so much meaning and are done with such a sense of purpose. Jeff's selling is excellent, as his facials and the way he bumps like a ragdoll do a terrific job garnering sympathy. He fights back valiantly at all the right times, making sure the audience can feel his heart. Perhaps newer fans think of Undertaker's dominance as being too slow compared to the ladder matches that they are used to, but there is a reason that the crowd are electric every time they think Jeff has a chance to pull off the upset. You can hear the rumble in the crowd grow louder with each piece of offence that he successfully puts together. JR's call of the finishing sequence is iconic and some of the most memorable work of his career. "He's touching the gold! ", "He's inches away from immortality! ", and of course... "Climb your ass off, kid! Make yourself famous! ". It's enough to give you chills. The post-match is equally sensational, and is something that many matches have tried to imitate without as much success because they often fail to make it feel as earned as The Undertaker and Jeff Hardy did here. "You haven't broke me, Taker. I'm still standing". When completely divorced from context I suppose I can understand some people not 'getting' this, but I don't believe that is a fair way to rate a match that so perfectly achieves exactly what they set out to accomplish at the time with a story that really connected with fans. This is a match that is greater than the sum of its parts and resonates with many fans of the era in a way that is hard to articulate. This was a true breakout moment for Jeff Hardy, and as far as I'm concerned this match is what pro wrestling legends are made of.

4709.11.2022flightaker3218.0I loved the start with Jeff Hardy playing mind games on Taker in order to get in some early offense on him, all of Jeff's spots early on were good. Taker eventually took control and could have ended him earlier but instead wanted to teach Hardy a lesson so he just punished him for a while and cut all attempts at a Hardy comeback. Jeff finally made a full comeback but everytime it seemed he had the match won Taker would stop him. Jeff's best shot at winning came after hitting Taker in the head 2x with a chair but Taker as the monster heel was able to get up in time to stop Hardy and win. Also JR was fantastic all match long.****1/4
4806.11.2022TSwifty6.0This match was better than a whole lot of WWE matches with weapon stipulations around this time because Jeff Hardy added so much life and fire to this. Taker working on top was slow, but Jeff getting hope spots and firing back with absolutely anything he could think of on a second's notice was great. ***1/4
4904.10.2022TheOneAndOnlyCactus9.0This is one of my favorite matches of all-time, but I tried to be as objective as possible. I'm a big Jeff Hardy fan and this was a star-making performance for a still young wrestler. Say what you will about Biker Taker, but in '02, he did his best to put over the younger talents as much as possible. These two had the crowd in the palm of their hands and they could do no wrong as they used their environment to the best of their abilities. It's an iconic David vs Goliath match which I believe everyone should see. One of the best Raw matches ever.

Knapp abgerundet.

6301.02.2022OnlyHalfTheEffinShow8.0This was a star-making match if ever there was one, and one of the best Raw main events during the Ruthless Aggression era. They had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hand and featured a legendary call by JR as Jeff Hardy desperately climbed the ladder to claim the title, "CLIMB THE LADDER KID! MAKE YOURSELF FAMOUS! " Honestly as good as the in-ring action here, the psychology is what stands out as others have mentioned as is my personal favorite aspect of this match. Jeff is the young, hungry up and comer against the brutal veteran, and the champion, Big Evil Taker. A must-watch for any fans of Taker and Jeff.
6426.01.2022arrancar7.0I had a suspicion that this might be really good despite its relatively unimpressive rating here, and boy was it. The psychology here was established in the pre-match build-up: Taker was the dominant champion, the bigger man, and a powerful brawler, but Jeff was the one more accustomed to hardcore-types matches like this upcoming ladder match, plus he was desperate to prove himself in the biggest match of his career. There was still not much doubt that Taker would get the win, but the match had been booked to still give Jeff a small but believable chance that everything might somehow align in his favour for just this one night. The start was great, as Jeff was clearly apprehensive about what he'd gotten himself into, so he had to evade Taker and catch him off guard in order to start the match off in control, which he figured would give him the best chance of winning. Jeff's early hope spots all looked good and made total sense, since he was the one more skilled and experienced in these hardcore-based match, hence why he was able to get the better of Taker via the use of a chair and ladder. Taker's big-man brawling work was nicely dominant, and Jeff's sympathetic selling and energetic bumping were very impressive in response, putting Taker's offence over big time. I liked the idea that Taker was clearly established as the better wrestler, and it was only through his arrogance and sadism that he chose to not simply climb up and grab the title; instead, he went about giving Jeff even further punishment, which would eventually almost cost Taker the match and the title. Jeff showed good passion in his few brief teases of a comeback before he finally got a proper one, with him showing off his usual impressive and reckless high-flying spots and some nicely shocking weapon attacks to fight his way back to control. There was a great atmosphere as the battered and exhausted Jeff tried to slowly limp his way up the ladder, with the crowd roaring behind him in support. Taker interfered quite a few times to stop him, but then Jeff seemed to have finally had it won after he smashed Taker's head in with a chair two times, only for Taker to once again come back and then Choke Slam Jeff off the top of the ladder right before it looked like Jeff might just have enough energy to extend his arms and grab the title. You could complain about Taker's no-selling, but he was the monstrous world champion, after all, so it was believable that the smaller Jeff's weapon attacks could only momentarily stun him as opposed to knock him unconscious, and the damage Taker already did to Jeff's thus prevented Jeff quickly capitalising, which is great storytelling. It was pretty heartbreaking to see Jeff -- the fan favourite underdog -- come so close and ultimately fail, but he got over massively here with his passionate performance plus with his defiant "I'm still standing" promo to Taker and Taker showing him respect and raising his hand in the post-match. ***3/4

6608.12.2021BrayanLaPre8.0A fantastic match and a classic moment in WWE history. There is no hyperbole necessary when stating that this is the match that established Jeff Hardy as a true factor in the singles realm. The Undertaker was magnificent in both his wrestling and his character work, while Hardy managed to get the entire crowd behind him in a brutal and well-structured match that was right in his wheelhouse. The type of match that most of us have watched repeatedly over the years. 4 stars, 8 out of 10. The moment after the match is iconic.

6928.08.2021youaremycmpunk10.0It's the top guy vs underdog match for the ages whose storytelling was done to perfection not just by Taker and Jeff Hardy who was made a major singles competitor overnight.
7016.06.2021cactus7.0This doesn't quite hold up, but it's still a fun match. Undertaker just isn't all that interesting when working on top as a bully. This would be greatly improved if they had someone like Hall Of Pain era Mark Henry as the match's heel. Jeff Hardy was made a single star by this match, so my criticisms amount to jack. I'd easily say that this was Jim Ross's best ever commentary performance. You could show a blind person this match and they would still get invested.
7114.04.2021Dooby8.0
7229.03.2021pierreMinne4.0I really didn't like this match, the point of the match is Hardy dominates first, Undertaker returns no selling everything like he wasn't dominated just before and he squashes Hardy for 90% of the match. The finish is atrocious with Hardy giving a chair shot to the head of Taker and Taker being normal 20 seconds later, and this was to bring the finish, with Taker forgetting to sell. Fortunately it contains some cool spots. **
7315.01.2021azoz600wwe7.0
7413.01.2021Seosi5.0I liked how the match started with Jeff playing mind games with The Taker, but it short lived as Taker gained the control most of the match. Taker was pretty much toying with Jeff through the match, which led to the match be slower. During the middle of the match, I felt it was when the in-ring got more interesting, from Taker leg drop a ladder on Jeff on the apron, to Jeff using the ladder as a trampoline to slingshot himself over Taker. But I felt the pace of the match wasn't that exciting, while I appreciate their effort and what they put themselves through. The crowd was invested for sure. **1/2

8410.07.2020Iceq7.0Erstes großes Singles Match vom absoluten Publikumsliebling Jeff Hardy.
8511.06.2020kcharles5206.0I remember liking this match alot more in 2002 but it hasn't aged well, especially when you know who will win. Most of it was Taker 'beating up' Jeff Hardy but in a slow and somewhat boring kind of way. The story of this was good and Ross was great on commentary but like I said, the match itself isn't all that amazing when you know the outcome. Watching it live, that might be a different story, but it doesn't hold up too well on 2nd viewing.

8820.04.2020Lexino738.0One of the founding fights as a solo wrestler for Jeff Hardy. The fight was built as a veteran teaches a young, so to speak, passing an exam. Jeff perfectly demonstrated his skills in this type of match, but most of all he remained persistent until the end for which he earned respect from Undertaker after the match. My rating is ****1/4.

9419.01.2020XelaFury10.0An iconic match for one big reason, it's the epitomy of a top guy vs underdog match whose storytelling was done to perfection not just by Jeff and Taker, but also by Ross and Lawler who really helped make this match feel important with their commentary. This was the night that cemented Jeff Hardy as a singles competitor and winning Undertaker's respect at the end of the show will forever remain a legendary moment in his career. Truly a match for the ages.
9527.12.2019nWo Member5.0Good underdog story and awsome moment after the match. But the action wasn´t anything special for a Ladder match involving Jeff Hardy.
9608.12.2019killyouridol6.0I don't really understand why this match got so high rating. Just a basic ladder match. Nothing really unique.

9822.11.2019ZestyZuluWarrior8.0Pretty brilliant match with the young underdog Hardy trying to overcome the bigger vet Undertaker. Hardy was bumping his ass off and the crowd was red hot for him.
