1613.09.2021SpikeWithGlasses7.0Pretty good show, very consistent as ROH has been recently, had some peaks, but never got too high, but it also never fell low, many good matches, one or two pretty good ones and just one meh match, the Jay Lethal "Pure manifesto" was really good but felt pointless, tho the Foundation also acted weird around Bandido before and after the show, interesting to see where it goes. Was nice to finally see Moriarty in ROH, as he had been booked twice already but didn't get to do the shows, wish he could've stayed, I think ROH fits him better than AEW, but maybe that's just the ROH fan in me. Atlas and Rust doing their returns (almost debuts they've had like 1 or 2 matches in ROH before), Rust was in the Pure tournament, so I wouldn't be surprised if he challenges soon, Atlas sadly got knocked out, I think, but the little we saw from him was good, Zayne's return will probably lead back to Bandido getting his win back. They need to sign Tony Deppen already. Happy Woods won the title, Gresham had defeated everyone and Woods is excellent in pure rules. Rok-C getting the title was also very nice, it's talked about how good she is for a 19 year old, and she really is one of the best in the whole tournament. EC3 showed once again he doesn't belong in ROH, he's not good in the ring, and while he had strong character work in TNA, his new character is just awful and makes his wrestling even worse.
1813.09.2021BuffKitty936.0Solid show with quite a few good matches. Personal favorite was the 6-Man tag title match seeing Shane Taylor Promotions have their three with less star power defend the belts and keep em.
1913.09.2021BUIOOMEGA7.0The show is solid without the match with the capitol letter but with strong works (expecially with Woods/Gresham).
2013.09.2021Rocky77.0A good PPV with two standout matches would normally get a higher mark, but I think AEW changed the game with how to structure a PPV, so this paled in comparison. However I would heavily recommend Gresham/Woods, even with the stoppage in the middle, and especially Rok-C/Alize, a true breakout performance by both women, up there with the best US women's matches of the year.
2113.09.2021GoldLiger7.0Not the best ROH show, but a hopeful one. Castle/Isom was a decent opener designed to build Castle for a TV Title shot while giving Isom a bit of shine and it was alright at that, wish Eli showed more though (***). Rust vs Atlas was cut short by Atlas clearly getting rocked; hope he's doing okay (**). 6-man after that was good; Dickinson & Moriarty got some shine and the former got the pin on the latter which makes sense to heat Dickinson up after the tag title loss and because Moriarty just committed to another company long-term (***1/4). Lethal's promo after feels like it was there to fill the time the 2nd match lost. OGK vs Briscoes was a standard TV-style tag but you legitimately cannot have a Brisoces tag be bad unless you actively tried to (***+). Gresham/Woods was a really noble booking ideas executed awkwardly; the sequence of these guys getting 3 double rope breaks and a double pin to show how even they are, and Gresham restarting the match in a refusal to accept a draw, had this crowd SILENT, but post-restart the match immediately got heated and had a fucking incredible finish so I don't know; I liked the work of these two even in the heatless first half but the pacing sucked the life out of it so despite how great it ended up as I can't give it 4 stars (***1/2 to ***3/4). STP/LFI was a really hectic and fun trios match in a similar vein to their 8-man tag on TV; O'Shay made a great impact stepping in for Shane and his teammates also impressed, while Dragon Lee did a lot of the heavy lifting for LFI in Rush's absence but he's good enough to pull that off (***1/2). For the first time ever in ROH, women had the MOTN. Rok-C and Alize had a real belter of a tournament final here, with really good pacing, intensity, variety, and storytelling culminating in making the very young Rok-C look like an absolute star who deserved her title win (****+). Very glad that ROH is sweeping the Women of Honor Title under the rug for this. Main event was odd but quite good. You had two big American powerhouses and two luchador fliers, all with different personalities, and they worked well together. EC3 was the weakest link by far, moving around at a glacial pace and basically no-selling everything between power moves, barely reacting when Flamita pulls an Eddie DQ bait to eliminate him, but he didn't fuck up any of his spots so he wasn't bad. Bandido & Flamita putting their differences aside to topple the big man in Brody with big lucha team attacks was great, and Brody was a great base for them (even if the rotation on that assisted Destroyer wasn't quite enough) before powering through and eliminating Flamita and really taking it to Bandido. Bandido tries everything to defeat Brody but nothing can actually keep him down, so he reaches into his bag of tricks and disorients him with a SUPER slick pinning combination sequence that gets him the win and makes him look extremely resourceful (***3/4).
2213.09.202113ird I was more excited for this card than any other Ring of Honor pay per view this year. After it finished, however, thanks largely to an incredibly slow beginning and an overall quiet crowd and in spite of 2-3 strong matches, I would be hard pressed to put this higher than 3rd on the list of the company's 2021 offerings. Things started really slowly with Eli/Dalton and Atlas/Rust. Eli's been killing it on tv and I was hoping that this could be his first time to really earn new fans on PPV, but I'd be surprised if that happened here. The second match had a nearfall where it seemed Atlas never raised his shoulder, and this (plus it happening later in the show) but a general damper on things. 3 Pure Guys vs. Violence finally built some momentum with a fun little trios match, which seemed to be all but killed by a lengthy Jay Lethal promo that amounted to "get pops with great names we no longer have." Business finally picked up with OGK/Briscoes, arguably match of the night. It had great intensity, a surprise finish, and it didn't overstay its welcome. The Pure title match told a unique story with both Woods and Gresham burning simultaneous ropebreaks. I was invested in every minute, but I wanted it to go another gear. I believe Woods is at his best when he's doing faster work, and it never really showed up here. The Trios Titles match featured a lineup change with Oshay Edwards filling in for Shane Taylor. A fine match where Oshay got to really shine, but a ref bump finish and short time meant it was more akin to their tv quality. I think the women's title match felt suitably epic, and if the earlier tag isn't your MotN, this probably is. It was the first match to really have face/heel heat and the crowd got into it. It went a good length, told a story, and both women looked strong. I feel comfortable giving it 3.75*, possibly 4. As for the main event, it was fine. EC3 looked strong early but a geek at the end. I think this suffered from a lack of time, or was simply just a collection of interesting spots without enough cohesion to bring the night home effectively. All in all, you have an interesting Gresham match to watch if you love pure, though sadly not the best of his incredible reign. I'd suggest going out of your way to see OGK/Briscoes and the women's tournament final, which gave me some hope for what Ring of Honor will do with its women in the future. None of these matches will likely be making MotY lists, however, and I feel general pacing issues, a quiet (though often justified) crowd, and what at first glance looked to be multiple botched pinfalls made this a harder overall watch than the breezy Glory by Honor Night 2 and the stellar Best in the World.
