[6.0] "Watching this PPV, it shows that the Attitude Era either holds up really well, or it doesn't hold up at all. This PPV had everything from non-memorable matches, to a classic that still holds up today. From the New Age Outlaws and Jarrett and Hart delivering what is an underrated tag match, to Undertaker and Shamrock putting the crowd to sleep for 19 minutes. Is this as good of a PPV as some people say? I say no. Is this as bad of a PPV as some people say? I also say no. The matches that do well on this card, do VERY well. The matches that don't, fall flat and it creates this rollercoaster of good matches and bad matches. All in all, this just a standard good PPV, the high points do outshine the low points, but there's just as much low points as there is high points, and that's something that can't be overlooked."
[4.0] "I was going back and looking at some Backlash cards and for some reason I didn't remeber this one. After finnaly finishing it I see why. A very inconsistent card here. I only had fun with 3 matches here. Those matches being Rock/Austin, Mankind/Show and Al/Holly. I guess the show was fine but I expected abit more from some matches here like Taker/Shamrock. It was a rough show to get through"
[5.0] "Honestly, this is a pretty middling card that is held up high by both the Boiler Room Brawl and the main event. The hardcore match was also quite good. Without those two or three matches, this would have been a very mediocre event. This probably is an event you'll cherry pick some matches to come back to rather than watch as a whole show. Not bad by any means, but not a standout event. The last thing to note is that this is Owen Hart's final PPV match before his untimely death"

The main event match between Austin and Rock, which seems a bit more structured here, is indeed the MOTN, but many other parts of the show meet minimum expectations but rarely exceed them. The Hardcore match is still quite nice, the Boiler Room Brawl has its moments, but nothing really imposes itself. I remembered all of that as being much more interesting."

It was one of the better 1999 PPV's in my opinion and a massive improvement on the disappointing Wrestlemania show as this show had a much more well rounded card which was of course headlined by the outstanding Austin v Rock rematch, which in my opinion is their most underrated clash. Mankind and Big Show also had a very violent and bloody boiler room brawl here where some of the imagery going on honestly looked like something you'd see in a horror film. It's an excellent, chaotic match that isn't for the faint of heart. Snow v Holly also had some great moments and I enjoyed the Outlaws vs Owen and Jarrett, well at least when it actually focused on the wrestling and not Debra. The only things that was bad really was the crowds reactions for Shamrock v Undertaker and while I actually enjoyed the goofy Godfather vs Goldust match, it shouldn't have been an IC Title match. Also the show ended on a big angle when Taker kidnapped Stephanie."
[8.0] "I really liked this show, so much better than wrestlemania and only had 1 really bad match which was the Intercontinental title match during a very low period for the belt. Undertaker vs Ken Shamrock being the second weakest match and not being bad shows the strength of this PPV led by a great main event"
[5.0] "An improvement over Mania XV, but still a bit mediocre. Minstry/Brood had some fun tag sequences by Edge and Christian the Acolytes looked badass in short bursts, could've done without Mideon and Vescera on my screen (5/10) Snow/Holly goes a bit overlong with the brawling, but its a pretty decent hardocre brawl, with a quite nice table superplex spot (6/10) Godfather/Goldust is a waste of five minutes and its not even funny (2/10) Outlaws vs Hart & Jarrett is a pretty good standard tag match with a nice workrate, even if the crowd and the company was more interested in "puppies" (6/10) Mankind/Big Show had a nice enough boiler room brawl since it was kept short and had some violent moments as expected (6/10) Triple H/X Pac went on for too long with trips working over body parts, there was some nice wrestling but they didn't do anything exciting enough for 20 minutes (5/10) Taker/Shamrock has the same problems but is a little more boring than the previous match (4/10) Austin/Rock was the best on the card with them doing a slightly upgraded version of their Mania main even. A lot of brawling around with a hot crowd ends the show with a good match (7/10) Not really a memorable show"
[6.0] "A pretty basic PPV outside of the Boiler Room Brawl and the main event. I personally feel that the Hardcore Championship match on this show was very underrated even if it did drag for a little while. This show will definitely be remembered for Undertaker kidnapping Stephanie at the end but for me it will be the three hardcore style matches on this card and especially Mankind and The Big Show's performance in their insane car crash of a match. This show is a solid 3 stars just based on those three matches being very good in my opinion."
[8.0] "Imma confess something to you guys. I really dont think this show was that bad. The worst thing about it was the IC Title match and this crowd was also pretty bad. But with 8 matches with only 2 of them being bad, cant complain a whole lot. Some of them couldve been better considering the time they got (Taker/Shamrock) But hell, I actually had fun watching this show."
[2.0] "This show actually put me to sleep watching this. The only good matches on this show were the boiler room brawl and the main event. It also doesn't help that this crowd in Providence BARELY reacted to anything all show except for the main event. When you get "Boring" chants in your opening match then you know this isn't gonna be a good show"
[4.0] "This one's an improvement over WrestleMania XV, but it's not a hard thing to accomplish. There are two stinkers with the Hardcore Championship match leading the line and then Godfather's and Goldust's burial of the IC Title, plus The Undertaker vs Shamrock is a barely acceptable match. The other stuff though at least isn't insulting or is even decent. The opener is fine, Outlaws vs Jarrett & Owen is a very good Tag Team Match and Mankind with Big Show have an enjoyable brawl. Triple H vs X-Pac is a surprise in terms of the length, but the story was pretty good so I didn't mind it and both guys worked their asses off. But the show's biggest mistake once again was having so many No DQ Matches that the main event didn't register as much as it could have with Austin and Rock once again having an all out brawl with camera spot being the only memorable thing about it. Like I said, an improvement, but still nothing worth the time."

The card looked good on paper, but lots of these matches ended up being duds, or just things that people at the time didn't really care about in an era where car crash TV and violence brought in the big bucks. The crowd kinda stopped giving a damn between the hardcore match and the main event [barring the boiling room match], with lots of good matches ending up being the equivalent of watching paint dry due to the lack of momentum from the crowd. Overall, it was just a standard pay-per-view. Nothing special, nothing displeasing."
[5.0] "Nach dieser Show fiel mir auf wie deplatziert die Matchlängen verteilt wurden, das Match mit Gangrel und Mideon (die man schon versuchte zu verstecken) bekam 12 Minuten; X-Pac/HHH und Undertaker/Shamrock je um die 20, während der Boiler Room Brawl knapp bemessen war... Opener war langweilig, das Hardcore Match ein kleines Highlight. Blöd z.T. für die Fans in der Halle, vor dem Fernseher war das ein gutes Match! Godfather/ Goldust ist ok, für den Spot auf der Card, das Tag Match Durchschnitt. Der Boiler Room Brawl macht Spaß in der Kürze, während Triple H und X-Pac ausgedehnt auf 20 Minuten Standardmoves zeigen, inkl. der Zeit angemessen mit Eingriffen am Ende. Das Match von Taker und Shamrock wird durch das Publikum schlechter gemacht als es ist, als Kampf per se hätte dies Jahre später funktionieren können, zu der Zeit war ein anderer Stil gefragt. Ich fand den Main Event auf ähnlichem Niveau wie bei WM, der typische Attitude-Brawl mit McMahon Chaos. Der Main Event und die Hardcore Matches retten eine sonst langatmige Card."

Nothing here is bad except the IC title match, although I wouldn't really call anything great except for the Boiling room brawl and Austin vs Rock. Taker/Shamrock was solid but it never really left the 2nd gear for me. Outlaws vs Owen and Jarrett was good, Triple H vs X-Pac was a good match with limb targeting although slow. Taker leaving with Stephanie after trying all those weeks was a great way to end the PPV. [5.0] "War ein solider PPV. Nicht mehr, nicht weniger. The Brood vs. The Ministry of Darkness fand ich persönlich sehr zäh und war auch kein guter Opener, um das Publikum anzuheizen (**). Al Snow vs. Hardcore Holly war mir etwas zu lang, gab auch kurz "Boring"-Rufe (*3/4). The Godfather vs. Goldust war einfach zu kurz und albern (*1/2). New Age Outlaws vs. Jeff Jarrett & Owen Hart war ein ordentliches Tag Team Match (***). Big Show vs. Mankind fand ich ziemlich unterhaltsam (***1/2). Triple H vs. X-Pac war mir etwas zu lang, aber trotzdem okay (***). Bei Undertaker vs. Ken Shamrock kam auch so gut wie keine Stimmung auf (**3/4). The Rock vs. Stone Cold war ne coole Nummer (***3/4)."

[8.0] "Last and one of the best IYH PPVs. Not everything is perfect but there are many good matches of all kinds. Opener isn't bad. Hardcore title match is entertaining, even better than at St Valentines Day Massacre. I found Godfather vs Goldust really funny. Tag team match is pretty good and Mankind vs Big Show is surprisingly awesome. No, it is not an awesome match but it has awesome hardcore that I didn't expected to see. Triple H vs X-Pac is disappointing for me. Great story but slow action and dumb eneding. Undertaker vs Shamrock is very weird for Taker. Very technical match with many holds. Not bad for something that untypical but I am not a big fan of it. Main event is simply great and much bettet than at Mania. I especially liked the moment with camera."
[6.0] "Gute Show ohne Ausfälle und zwei Highlights am Ende: Taker gegen Shamrock stark Submission-basiert aber ein guter Kampf und am Ende der fast reine NHB-Brawl zwischen The Rock und Steve Austin. Den Boiler Room Brawl fand ich auch noch ganz gut und besser als das Hardcore Title Match. Alle anderen Matches waren auch mindestens solide bis gut."
[4.0] "Erneut eine nicht sonderlich mitreissende Show, die allerdings mit einem durchaus brauchbaren Opener beginnt. Bei Edge & Christian kann aber auch nicht viel schief gehen. Das gilt leider nicht für das Hardcore und noch weniger für das IC-Titelmatch. Beide waren nicht gut und vorallem langweilig. Die New Age Outlaws sorgen dann für ein kleines Zwischenhoch in der Midcard. Welches gleich wieder von dem miesen Boiler Room Brawl platt gemacht wird. Auch Triple H schafft es zu keiner Zeit Spannung aufzubauen. Die Story war ja ganz nett, aber das Match leider nicht. Ganz schlimm wurde es dann aber bei Shamrock vs den Taker. Hier gab es eigentlich nur Halte- und Aufgabgriffe zu bestaunen. Ab und zu garniert mit einem Schlag oder Tritt. Unfassbar langweilig und Lowlight der Card. Der Mainer konnte dann wieder voll und ganz überzeugen, was bei der Paarung aber auch nicht weiter verwunderlich ist. Insgesamt mal wieder eine Show, die wie so viele zu der Zeit einzig und allein durch den Main Event überhaupt eine Daseinsberechtigung hat."
[7.0] "I think this is one of the best event they can have after Wrestlemania. The match for the Hardcore Title is entertaining, Hardcore Holly and Al Slow delivered with that match. Also New Age Outlaws vs Jeff Jarrett and Owen Hart is a good tag team match, the the Boiler Room Brawl between Big Show and Mankind has some bumps. X-Pac vs Triple H is a strong rivalry, Undertaker vs Shamrock not really one of my favorite match and there is another good chapter of Steve Austin vs The Rock a in No Holds Barred. It's better than expected, even by 1999 standards."
[5.0] "Der Opener war ein okayes 3 Men TT match. Nichts besonderes auch kin Stinker. Das Hardcore Title Match war ein klassisches Hardcore Match was man sich durchaus angucken kann weil es relativ kurzweilig ist. Godfather vs Goldust war dann der erste Fremdscham Moment des Abends. Nicht nur ist das Gimmick des Godfathers einfach nur sexistisch sondern auch Goldust und The Blue Meanie waren einfach eine für die Zeit typische Freakshow. Bescheuertes Finish und allgemein mieses Match zum Glück dauerte es nicht lange. New Age Outlaws vs. Jeff Jarret und Owen Hart zeigt nur, in welchem Frauenbild ein Vincent McMahon gefangen ist & ich hoffe Debra wurde wenigstens gut bezahlt. Owen Harts Talent wurde hier wieder einmal verschwendet. Der Brawl zwischen Big Show & Mankind hat mir wirklich gefallen (ist vielleicht auch auf meine irrationale Liebe für Mick Foley zurückzuführen) aber es war halt ein typisches "Mankind macht sich kaputt" Match & Big Show hat auch wirklich ein paar miese Sachen eingesteckt. Tripple H vs. X-Pac hatte einige ganz nette Spots & ich mag einfach Chyna aber alles in allem war es viel zu lang. Apropos langatmig. Undertaker vs Ken Shamrock. Oh Gott dieses Mach. Es war einfach so unfassbar langweilig. Es gab gefühlt 200x Near-falls und nicht einmal dachte man: "Oh er könnte ihn jetzt wirklich bis 3 auf dem Boden halten". Es gab einen netten Konter in eine Armbar von Shamrock aber sonst hatte ich das Gefühl das dieses Match einfach nicht enden wollte. Gottseidank gab es das Main Event sonst hätte ich diesem PPV 3 Punkte gegeben. Aber dieses Main Event hat wirklich für vieles entschädigt. So großartige Sequenzen (ich sage nur "Kamera") zwischen The Rock & Austin & wieder mal haben beide gezeigt warum sie bis heute absolute Superstars in der WWE sind. Alles in Allem ein unfassbar zäher PPV der mit 2 Hardcore Matches und einem spitzen Main Event immerhin noch auf 5 1/4 Punkte für mich kommt."

Keine wirklichen Highlights bis auf den Main Event, aber eine ganze Menge Kram, bei dem die Halle komplett abgegangen ist und man sich aus heutiger Sicht fragt, warum eigentlich. Nichtsdestotrotz kann das alles durchaus unterhalten, wobei ich mir von Triple H vs. X-Pac persönlich mehr versprochen hätte."

Wieder konnten die beiden positiv überraschen. Highlight war sicherlich der Suplex durch den Tisch. (3 1/4*) 3. Godfather gegen Goldust war für mich das Lowlight. Der Godfather war für mich nie IC Champion Material. Match war auch nicht gut. (1 1/2*) 4. NAO gegen Owen/Jeff war wieder besser. (3 1/4*) 5. Mankind & Show haben mich nach dem WM Desaster mehr als überrascht. Harter Brawl. Obwohl Foley wieder ein wenig mit dem Einstecken übertreibt. (3 1/4*) 6. Triple H gegen X-Pac war doch etwas enttäuschen, obwohl uns JR einen Klassiker versprach. Hier hätte X-Pac ruhig nach dem Eingriff Kanes gewinnen können. Aber The Game scheint den Chokeslam & Bronco Buster gar nicht zu spüren. (2 1/2*) 7. Taker gegen Shamrock boten genau was ich mir von den beiden erwartet habe. Match war nicht schlecht aber auch nicht gut. (2 1/2*) 8. ME siehe Guide. (3 3/4*) Backlash war eine kleine Wiedergutmachung für die eher schwache WM. Rock/Austin sowie Show/Mankind waren besser als wie im Vormonat. Stinker gab es auch keinen. Tendiere zw. 6 & 7."
[7.0] "Dank Viscera gewinnt die Ministry den Opener, ging so. Richtig unterhaltsames Hardcore Title Match dann. Das IC-Title Match war dann eher nichts. Das Tag Match dann schon wieder besser. Cooler Boiler Room Brawl. Triple H gegen X-Pac war richtig gut. Undertaker gegen Shamrock war völlig anders als erwartet, aber gut. Der Main Event war klasse und so richtig schön Attitude-Style."
[6.0] "Better than average card. The Austin/Rock deliver a set wrecking main event that signaled the end of the In Your House series. Al Snow and Hardcore Holly give a nice long hardcore title match especially for just an undercard match. But most the rest of the matches were just about what you'd expect from the performers at this stage in their career."
[6.0] "Despite a promising card on paper, a fairly average show. Austin-Rock is the only must see match. Taker-Shamrock has a nice, slow build, but it never picks up like I hoped it would. HHH-X-Pac had a bad ending in my opinion, and it was lacking in X-Pac offense given the story they were trying to tell. Mankind-Big Show is just a bunch of weapon spots; putting that on the same card as Snow-Holly made it two goofy matches instead of one. Everything else was largely inoffensive but not special."

[4.0] "Der Opener lagnweilt mich, Snow vs Holly ebenso, Godfather vs Goldust schwach, NAO vs Hart & Jarrett endlich mal was annhembares, Mankind vs Show ist ganz nett, Triple H vs Pac ist ganz gut, Taker vs Shamrock hingegen nicht und viel zu lang und das Main Ecvent grenzt an das eh schon tolle WM ME AN. nach der meiner Meinung nach starken WM ein umso enttäuschenderer PPV."
[7.0] "Nach dem langweiligen Opener (5/10) zeigt Hardcore Holly sein mutmaßlich bestes WWE-Match überhaupt (9/10). Das IC-Title-Match ist wiederum schlecht, wird aber ein klein wenig durch die Comedyeinlagen aufgewertet (5/10). Owen Hart muss in seinem letzten PPV-Match jobben, es ist aber ganz gut anzuschauen (7/10). Boiler Room Brawl ist mal etwas anderes und hat durchaus Unterhaltungswert, insbesondere kommen auch viele ungewöhnliche Hilfsmittel zum Einsatz (8/10). Triple H und X-Pac liefern ein recht intensives Duell ab. Die Dynamik des Beginns schlägt dann mehr und mehr in lange Haltegriffsequenzen um, die aber einer taktischen Matchführung durchaus Sinn verleihen; Finish ist dann wieder actionreich (7/10). Den Undertaker hat man selten in einem so mattenwrestlinglastigen Match gesehen wie hier gegen Shamrock, allerdings ist es doch dem vorangegangenen Kampf mit seiner Grifflastigkeit zu ähnlich, darüber hinaus scheint - wie später bei Taker vs. Austin - die Ringchemie zwischen beiden nicht wirklich zu stimmen (6/10). Das große Wrestlemania-Rematch zwischen Austin und Rock übertrifft noch die Erwartungen und das Wrestlemania-Match (11/10). Gesamt: 7, 25."

[5.0] "Nicht viel stärker als Wrestlemania, aber ein kleines Bisschen (statt 5. 0 Punkten 5. 4), aber dadurch bleibt es zwischen Ausreichen und Befriedigend. Die Kassette lasse ich maximal bis zum Start HHH vs. X-Pac zurückspülen, wenn ich sie mir noch mal ansehe. und 18:50 müssen dazwischen auch nochmal vorgespult werden.. Einfach nicht befriedigend."
[4.0] "Backlash 1999 reiht sich nahtlos in die unspektakulären und teilweise langweiligen PPVs dieser Zeit ein. Der Opener ging noch so gerade eben, das Hardcore Match anschließend erneut ganz witzig, doch zu sehr in die Länge gezogen. Das IC Title Match war wie so oft die Matches um diesen Titel in dieser Zeit: einfach nur schwach. Das Tag Team Match danach war nichts besonderes, ging aber in Ordnung. Mankind gegen Show war okay, auch wenn man bei einem Boiler Room Brawl nicht viel erwarten sollte. HHH gegen X-Pac war ziemlich schlecht. Doch leider war dies nicht alles. Das Match wurde viel zu sehr in die Länge gezogen, was dem Match sehr geschadet hat. Noch schlechter waren hingegen die fast zwanzig Minuten Undertaker gegen Shamrock. Ich habe selten ein so schlechtes Match mit Beteiligung des Takers gesehen. Der Main Event hingegen war sehr gut und konnte problemlos mit dem Wrestlemania Match aus dem Jahr 1999 mithalten. Das rettet zumindest das "Ausreichend"."
[7.0] "Ein überraschend gut gealterter PPV. Der Main Event war auf ähnlichen Niveau wie das Match bei WM (wenn auch noch überbookter), die beiden Co-Main Events waren ebenfalls sehenswert. Ein echter Tiefpunkt fehlte (wobei das IC Title Match grenzwertig war ... ), leider auch ein echter Höhepunkt. Alles bewegte sich eben auf anständigen Niveau."
[6.0] "Besser als Wrestlemania im Monat zuvor. Die Matches hatten mehr Zeit, es konnte sich entfalten. Besonders der Main Event von Backlash war besser als der von Wrestlemania."
[6.0] "Besser als Wrestlemania, was für das Folgejahr einen seltsamen Trend starten sollte. Der Main Event war das drittstärkste Rock-Austin-Match (nach WM17 und WM19) und auch an HHH gegen X-Pac habe ich gute Erinnerungen. Ich gebe zu, dass die Vollzeit-Rückkehr von Jim Ross auch seinen Teil dazu beigetragen hat, dass alle Matches ein Stückchen besser wirkten."
[8.0] "Das Hauptmatch war nicht so gut wie das erste Match der beiden bei Wrestlemania, aber immer noch ok, genau wie Undertaker vs Shamrock. 8 Punkte verdient sich der PPV auch wegen des starken Hardcore Title Matches und dem Boiler Room Brawl."
