To begin with, most vignettes (outside of Nicole Savoy and Kairi Sane) are awful and begs for sympathy, with them either looking goofy or transparently pandering. No less than three vignettes focus on them saying there not there by nepotism, then providing damning suspicions of it. The matches are not up to par either, with the opener being lukewarm, the second match being downright awful and the third underplaying Nicole Savoy's upsides. Thankfully, the main event featured Kairi Sane who immediately connected to the crowd with her unusual mystic and actually had the opportunity of being entertaining. This is a terribly weak way to close the first round, let's hope the next round will kick-off in a better way. |

The match was simply too ordinary for much to stand out. Lacey Evans -vs- Taynara Conti – (Mae Young Classic – Round 1) [*] Taynara was pretty, but way too green for this game. Evans held it at an acceptable level for such a short match, but this wasn’t really working that well beyond that. Nicole Savoy -vs- Reina Gonzalez – (Mae Young Classic – Round 1) [*] Not too impressive. I had more hopes for Ricky Gonzalez’s daughter than what she showed and Savoy was the deserving winner. Kairi Sane -vs- Tessa Blanchard – (Mae Young Classic – Round 1) [**] Probable the best match of the first round. Japan’s Kairi Sane against 3rd generation wrestler Tessa Blanchard. Technically sound, Blanchard playing the heel, Kairi trying to get her gimmick over. The fans seemed into the Stardom girl and she got her profile victory making the elbow important part of her game landing it in fine style to beat the Blanchard baby. |

Candice LeRae ist ein bekannter Name und so überrascht es nur wenig, dass Michelle hier den kürzeren zieht. In der kurzen Zeit konnte das Match aber gut unterhalten. Matches 2 und 3 waren dann solide aber auch nicht mehr. Im Main Event sieht man dann das beste Match in dieser ersten Runde. Die beiden Damen sind sehr talentiert und vor allem über die WWE-Zukunft von Kairi Sane bin ich wirklich erfreut. Außerdem ist ihr Elbow Drop einfach nur klasse. |

Das Match ist kein wirklicher Kracher, sondern passt sich dem bisher eher behäbigen Turnierniveau an. Im zweiten Match ist die Grundvoraussetzung 'Ex-Marine vs. Kampfsportexpertin' eigentlich schon ganz nett. Die Vertreterin der WWE Kaderschmiede hatte aber auch bereits Auftritte bei NXT und deshalb heute auch das glücklichere Händchen. Savoy und Gonzales machen beide einen ganz interessanten Eindruck, wobei man im Ergebnis dieser Partie auf die Athletik setzt. Das letzte Match der Show ist auch mit Abstand das beste der kompletten ersten Runde - Kari Sane ist unheimlich beweglich und bumpt stark, die Tochter des Horsemen Tully Blanchard hingegen ist intensiv zugange und überzeugt auch mit Mimik und Gestik, das ist schon ziemlich gut anzusehen. Die Show steht dadurch auch eine Handbreit über den anderen der ersten Turnierrunde. |

Mit Lacey Evans kann ich gar nichts anfangen. Ist mir alles zu sehr auf ihren Background fokussiert und dazu noch dieses unpassende Gimmick. Da hat mir Conti mit ein paar wirklich schönen Judo Einlagen besser gefallen, auch wenn sie dringend lernen muss wie man in einem Wrestling-Ring läuft! Gonzalz gleich die nächste mit fragwürdigen Gimmick (Cowgirl + Phantom der Oper WHAT? ) Match war leider auch eher dürftig. Sane vs. Blanchard dann mit Abstand das beste der ersten Runde (***1/2). |
| 38 | 29.08.2017 | marexcel | 6.0 | Wieder ein großer Name, der #4 des Mae Young Classic eröffnen darf. Candice macht das gut und Renee gibt sich beste Mühe, mitzuhalten. Ganz ordentlicher Opener. Match 2 ist das nächste NXT-Duell der Vorrunde und featured durchaus zwei interessante Workerinnen. Lacey ist da merklich einen Schritt weiter, aber mit bis dahin sechs Matches im Buch ist Taynara auch sehr grün und das merkt man auch. Reina Gonzalez darf sich dann auch zeigen und muss Lehrgeld zahlen, aber auch sie hatte da gerade mal sieben Matches bestritten. Nicole Savoy macht’s solide. Das letzte Match der Vorrunde ist auch gleichzeitig die beste Paarung auf dem Papier. Wenn man sieht, wer da zum Teil weitergekommen ist, ist es Schade, dass hier eine Dame gehen muss. Gutes Tempo und sehenswerte Offensive von beiden Damen. Mit Kairis Piraten-Gimmick hadere ich etwas, aber es stört hier nicht weiter. Im Endeffekt nicht nur auf dem Papier das beste Match der ersten Runde. Sehenswert in vielen Teilen und hebt so Show #4 auf solides Niveau. |

Michelle machte aber auch eine gute Figur und durfte mal reinschnuppern. Sie sollte aber wieder ihr altes Shine Attire verwenden. Hier sah sie wie ein Weihnachtsbaum aus. **3/4 Ich muss ehrlich sagen, ich mag Lacey Evans nicht. Das Gimmick, die Backstory und der Pathos-Anteil stört mich und ich kann sie nicht als sympathisch empfinden. Das ist mir zu aufgesetzt und zu typisch Klischee-US. Conti strahlt leider auch wenig aus, daher war mir das Match relativ egal. Das Match war dann auch nicht so der Knüller. *1/2 Savoy vs. Reina war halt da. Savoy kann sehr viel mehr, als sie es hier zeigen konnte oder durfte. Lag wohl auch an der limitierten Reina. *3/4 Es war Zeit für den Main Event der ersten Runde und da gehört natürlich Kairi hin. Sehr schönes Match mit Tessa, was mit dem besten Elbow im Business beendet wurde. Wir haben Kairi eigentlich nicht verdient aber ich hoffe, dass WWE sie ordentlich behandeln wird und sie in dieser egoistischen Wrestling-Welt ihren Platz findet. Aufjedenfall war dieses Match ein guter Abschluss der Vorrunde. ***3/4 |

Evans/Conti war vom Match her nicht besonders überragend, ich denke das Evans bei den Fans mit ihrem pro Amerika Gimmick gut ankommen wird(*1/2). Savoy/Gonzalez hat mich kaum interessiert, ein paar solide Aktionen(*1/2). Sane/Blanchard zeigen für mich bislang, wie auch erwartet, das beste Match des Turnieres(***1/4). |
