Firstly, while in general I prefer 5v5 Survivor Series tags, for these early Survivor Series shows where the entire card is comprised of elimination tags, I actually think that 4v4 works better. It makes everything much shorter and easier to watch instead of dragging everything out and killing the novelty of the gimmick by the end of the night. I also love the idea of all the survivors teaming up for one final match at the end, and think that has a lot of really fun possibilities. The first few matches were a lot fun, with The Million Dollar Team vs. The Dream Team and The Visionaries vs. The Vipers both standing out for their strong match structure. I especially liked that the elimination tags all told very different stories and had very different layouts, which has been an issue on previous installments of this PPV. Unfortunately, the rest of the show does not continue this momentum, as the matches become increasingly lazy and uninspired in the second half. Not to mention, the lengthy Gobbledy Gooker (although can you really even hate this anymore now that it has become almost iconic for how bad it is? ) and the absolutely rotten Sgt Slaughter promo. The final two matches are really poor, and Slaughter's main event push was a disaster and clearly not working in any way. The short run time does still make this easy to watch and I seemingly got more out of the first half of the show than a lot of fans, so I'm still comfortable giving this a positive rating. With that said, I think it's safe to say that this show fell short of its potential - although I'd personally love to see them take another shot at the Ultimate Match Of Survival concept. |

I liked the concept of this PPV with the idea of the Survival of all Survivors match, but the execution wasn't there for me. This show is of course most known for the debut of the Gobbledy Gooker...oh yeah, and some guy named The Undertaker. The Gobbledy Gooker gimmick of course stunk, and that segment went longer than I remembered; I felt bad for Hector Guerrero. Bret Hart stole the show for me as he was great in the Million Dollar Team vs Dream Team match; which was also my favourite match of the night. This is a very interesting show to sit down and fully take in, and of course a historic one. |

I considered giving this show 3 points, but I went to 4, because I do think this show would have been a lot more enjoyable when it aired than it aged into. The final match of survival was a good new concept, which I wish they tried again, but due to both how rushed the show needed to be to fit everything in, and how absolutely predictable it ended up being made it feel really flat. In fact, all three matches featuring the top faces of the time were just so paint by numbers that it made the show suffer. Add in another rushed waste of a match with Slaughter and Tito, and you really were left with two matches to try and carry this entire show. And while both were quite good, they weren't SO good that it could make this show memorable. If you're a huge fan of the predictable but 'feel good' shows of the late 80's/early 90's WWF, you might get some greater value here, but this one aged horribly. Watch this event for Taker's debut match, and maybe to see Martel's underrated heel work in the Jake feud, and that's about it. |

The only highlight of this whole show is the second match, featuring superb performances from The Undertaker, Ted DiBiase and Bret Hart along with arguably the greatest arrival in WWF/E history. This was during the transition from Ax & Smash to the infinitely less interesting Smash & Crush. Nice to see the hair plugs are working for Bill Eadie. The entire match can be summed up in one word. Bleh. *. Dusty Rhodes, Koko B. Ware & The Hart Foundation vs. Ted Dibiase, Honkytonk Man, Greg Valentine & The Mystery Partner. The Mystery Partner turns out to be? the Undertaker! And talk about a great debut! They cut to the crowd for some guy? s reaction, which is somewhere around **GULP! **. Not much of a match until Dibiase and Bret got in there, but the debut of the Undertaker is certainly historic. **. Jake Roberts, Jimmy Snuka & The Rockers vs. Rick Martel, The Warlord & Power & Glory. Martel sprayed Jake in the face with his perfume ? Arrogance, ? so Jake is still partially blind at this point. That has to rank as one of the stupidest feuds of all time, but I guess it had its own sort of internal logic. Shawn nearly carried seven guys to a good match. Nearly. *1/2. Hulk Hogan, Jim Duggan, Tugboat & the Big Bossman vs. Dino Bravo, the Earthquake, Haku & the Barbarian. Another meh match. Hogan beats up Bobby Heenan after the match for kicks. Heenan actually takes the best bump of the PPV. **. Nikolai Volkoff, Tito Santana & the Bushwhackers vs. Sgt. Slaughter, Boris Zhukov & the Orient Express. This was stupifyingly bad. You will never see anything this bad? ever. 0 stars. Wait. I take that back because Mean Gene stands by near the egg, which had been hyped for weeks. And? it? s hatching. It? s? it? s the Goobledegooker. See, he? s a guy in a giant turkey costume. Specifically, he? s Hector Guerrero in a turkey costume. I would laugh, but there? s a real tragedy in that Hector was a fantastic wrestler ? at least as good as Eddy and maybe better ? but his two shots at the big time were this and ? Lazertron. ? Well, at least this thing was forgotten about immediately afterward, at least as far as the WWE is concerned. The Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan & Tito Santana vs. Ted Dibiase, Rick Martel, the Warlord, and Power & Glory. These are all of the survivors, conveniently divided among face and heel lines. I know it? s the Kayfabe era, but wouldn? t it be more realistic (and interesting, really) to put Dibiase with Hulk, Warrior and Tito to make the sides even? Anyway, the match was brisk, inoffensive and meaningless outside of trying to give Warrior one last rub. *1/4. The best match tops out at **, and the PPV is thoroughly pointless, notable only for Undertaker's debut (which *is* pretty cool) and the Grand Finale concept, which was never repeated. While there were worse shows, this one perfectly demonstrates the kind of stuck-inside-the-box thinking that killed the WWF from 1990-1992. Thumbs way down. |

Ich fand übrigens die Dreifachdisqualifikation hier gut, da Regeln mal konsequent angewandt wurden. Das Match danach war das MOTN. Gutes Tempo, gute Story und vor Allem bekam jeder die Chance was zu zeigen - besonders auch der Undertaker, der in seinem Debüt gut dargestellt wurde. Das Match danach hatte nicht ganz so viel Story aber auch gute Action, auch wenn es in der Mitte teilweise etwas durchhing. Das Match der Hulkamaniacs und das Main Event möchte ich zusammen bewerten, da beide ähnlich vom Niveau her waren und zwar beide nicht besonders gut oder aufregend, allerdings schon natürlich Reaktionen zogen. Die Alliance gegen die Mercenaries gefiel mir zwar nicht wrestlerisch aber zumindest aufgrund der Story besser. Dazu kam noch ein gutes Interview mit "Macho King". Insgesamt wollte ich eigentlich eher 6 Punke geben da auch wenn kein Hammermatch dabei war eben auch nichts nach unten ausriss und eine anständige Show darstellte. Aber das Segment mit dem Gobbledy Gooker zog es dann für mich doch noch auf 5 Punkte. Was zur Hölle sollte das? Es war sinnfrei, peinlich, ließ Mean Gene nicht gut da stehen und war wirklich so schlecht wie man immer hört. |

Stimmungsvoller Opener. Das die beiden verfeindeten Teams in einem Double DQ ausscheiden zu lassen fand ich ganz gut. Mr. Perfect alleine gegen 2 Warriors. Einen davon besiegt er und den anderen fast auch. Am Ende ist natürlich der damalige WWF Champion der Sieger. Das zweite Match sollte für Spannung sorgen mit dem mysteri Partner. Das debut des Undertakers. Alleine deswegen schon sehenswert. Mehr dazu im Guide. Gutes Match. Es geht auch gut weiter mit dem Besten Match des Abends. Mehr dazu im Guide. Dann geht die Veranstaltung so langsam den Bach herunter. Team Hogan gegen The Natural Disasters ist aber für damalige Verhältnisse okay uns besser als von mir erwartet. Warum Hogan aber auch nicht hier (siehe SummerSlam) nicht Earthquake pinnen darf bleibt mir ein Rätsel. Wirklich viel vor hatte Mann mit Earthquake ja dann eh nicht mehr. Der Rest des Abends ist dann eigentlich nicht die Rede Wert. Es gab ein ziemlich schlechtes Match rund um die Story von Sgt. Slaughter. Dieser wurde wenigstens Stark dargestellt. Neben bei möchte ich erwähnen das die Stimmung auch ziemlich am Boden ist und sich nicht mehr wirklich erholt. Es gab ein unerträgliches Segment mit dem Gobbledy Gooker, wirklich tragisch und ein verschenktes Main Event. Die Idee fande ich wirklich gut aber die Umsetzung war richtig schlecht. Es sollte nur dazu dienen Hogan und Warrior weiter gut dar stehen zu lassen. In Anbetracht des geworbenem Match zwischen Ultimate Warrior und Ted DiBiase war hier wirklich mehr zu erwarten. Das Main Event hätte den PPV retten können, so aber als einer der Schlechteren Survivor Series PPV zu bewerten. |

Von all dem Dargebotenen sind das zweite und das dritte Match der Show als einzige noch erwähnenswert, gerade weil da auch die etwas talentierteren Worker zum Zuge kommen. Die anderen Partien schwanken zwischen 'grad noch in Ordnung' und 'geht ja mal gar nicht' - und in letztere Kategorie fällt dann ausgerechnet der maue Mainer, der hier einleuchtend zu verstehen gibt, dass das alles doch nur eine Posing-Plattform für Hulk und den Warrior ist. Die Show guckt man sich an, aber da bleibt nichts wirklich hängen. Aufgrund der beiden Begegnungen aus dem Matchguide ist das gerade noch ausreichend. |

Too bad any match was bad, the one with Sgt. Slaughter touching the floor of mediocrity. The terrible thing is that after a few years the WWF already was repeating the same stuff over and over. Hier wird sehr komisches Booking geboten, da die Faces quasi durchweg im Vorteil sind. Zumindest wird Mr. Perfect dadurch gut dargestellt auch wenn er natürlich den Sieg des Warriors nicht verhindern kann. Das zweite Match läuft genau umgekeht und hier sind die Heels durchweg im Vorteil und Ted DiBiase kann am Ende auch gewinnen. Das wrestlerisch beste Match des Abends ist dann das dritte. Hier wird über die gesamte Distanz ein sehr ansehnliches Match gebote, dass aber darunter leidet das es zu keinem Zeitpunkt spannend war. Hogan darf natürlich sein Match auch alleine gewinnen und das letzte reguläre Match dient dazu Sgt. Slaughter für seine kommenden Aufgaben aufzubauen ohne ihm den Sieg zu geben. Das Survival of all Survivors ist so gebookt wie man es erwarten konnte und ist im Großen und Ganzen eher langweilig. Insgesamt gab es nicht wirklich einen Stinker, aber auch kein richtig überzeugendes Match. Hier regierte das Mittelmaß, aber für die Series ist das meistens schon ein Kompliment. |

Dann folgt das schwächste Ausscheidungsmatch. Hier waren doch etliche unfähige Worker(Volkoff, Zhukov) beteiligt. Stark dargestellt wurden vor allem Edeljobber Santana und Slaughter. Der Sieg Santanas war doch überraschend. (1 1/2*)6. Der Ausgang des großen Finales war von Beginn an klar. Wer sollte den schon Hogan & den Warrior eliminieren. (o. W. )Mir gefiel der PPV. Starke Leistungen von Perfect, Hart, DiBiase, Martel & Co.. Dazu noch das Debut vom Taker. Was mir weniger gefiel war das Gooker Segment. Auch den Fans in der Halle schien es nicht zu gefallen. Schade auch das Ventura durch Piper ersetzt wurde. |

Slaughter before his match took place, this was still a great PPV nonetheless! The Ultimate Warriors vs. The Perfect Team was pretty good except I didn't understand how both LOD and Smash & Crush of Demolition got disqualified since it was only Hawk and Smash who got rough with the referee, but it's all good. At least the match didn't drag out too long after that and it was still a good match. The Vipers and The Visionaries was a very fun match and I loved the fact that all the Visionaries team members survived cause that made all of them look strong as hell heading into the final match! The Dream Team vs. The Million Dollar Team, MATCH OF THE NIGHT! A lot of technical wrestling and a lot of fast-paced action included in this match! WWE made The Undertaker look tremendous in his debut with the company! I liked that he got counted out cause it didn't make him look weak at all! I love that Bret Hart and Ted DiBiase gave us an additional 4 minutes of wrestling action leading up to the final elimanation, and Roddy Piper's commentary was top notch during this match! I loved everything about this match! I like that Hogan and Warrior were the sole survivors in the last Survivor Series match and it gave us that great camera shot and vision at the end of both of them standing tall on the apron with their backs facing towards the fans! |

Die Idee mit dem finalen Survivor Match finde ich übrigens sehr gut. |

Mit dem Undertakerdebut gab es einen großen historischen Moment und mit dem Segment um das übergroße Ei den wohl absoluten Tiefpunkt der WWF Geschichte. Die ersten 3 Matches gingen dank (teilweise) guter Besetzung noch in Ordnung. Danach kam nicht mehr viel. Das Match der Survivors war zwar ein guter Einfall, in dieser Besetzung allerdings natürlich sehr unspannend. Muss man sich wirklich nicht anschauen. |

Das zweite Elimination Match war auch schön anzusehen, und der Undertaker durchaus beeindruckend. Dass danach ein gesamtes Team übersteht ist vor allem im Hinblick aufs Finale eine starke Sache und auch die folgenden 2 Elimination Matches sind stark, das Finale bringt noch eine kleine Neuerung, die mir in den folgejahren auch sehr gut gefallen hätte. Gute Series mit 8 Punkten. |

Was ich "leider" auch nie vergessen werde, ist Mean Gene mit dem Gobbly Gooker, was ein grauenvolles Spektakel das doch war! |

Ansonsten fand ich den PPV nicht so schlecht wie er öfter mal gemacht wird. Sicher, Hogan und der Warrior, aber damals durfte es halt nicht mehr als zwei alles beherrschende Superstars in der WWF geben. |
