[4.0] "A product of the time that hasn't really aged well. A disappointing rumble combined with sub-par action throughout the card (including a horrific woman's match) made this a slug to watch in one sitting. The best segment for me was the body pose between Rude and Warrior, which goes to show how much I thought of this show. The few good moments (body pose, Mega-Powers build, strong characters and gimmicks) can't make up for how boring this show is, which is the ultimate sin for me."
[5.0] "Solid rumble, with some great storytelling moments, but a weak undercard dragged this down. Womens match was awful, the other two werent anything memorable, and tbh as much as I enjoyed parts of the rumble the finish was underwhelming."
[5.0] "The 1989 Royal Rumble was a solid event. I just think that, because of how much talent was being used for the Rumble, the undercard was underwhelming. While I appreciate the Rude and Warrior pose down to advance their feud for Wrestlemania, I don't see why those two couldn't have worked double duty and been in the Rumble too to give it some more star power. Maybe make Rude come in early and have Warrior come down and eliminate him, then have Warrior come out as a late draw, look like he might win, and then Rude comes back out, beats him down more, and gets him eliminated too. The women's title match was a waste of time, and the tag match should have been better but was alright. The Rumble itself was very good, but I think the underwhelming card before it, and the fact that the Rumble itself had a very poor last 5-10 minutes leaves this event feeling a little bit empty. A good event to throw on every once and a while for sure, but far from a classic."
[4.0] "The first PPV version of the Royal Rumble but somehow a step down from the televised event. The opening six man tag is held together by the Harts and Rougeaus but its neither teams best performance and it goes for too long. Bravo and Duggan don't really add anything either (4/10) Robin vs Martin is the weakest match on the card it drags even at only 6 minutes since its all very basic and uninteresting (3/10) Haku vs Harley Race has a few moments that look pretty good, but Race wasn't great at this point in time so once again this match drags in points but its not aweful (4/10) The Rumble itself is a slight improvement over the first years with a strong start between Ax and Smash some good story progression with the Mega Powers, and a few great wrestlers like Perfect or HBK holding it together in between, but even with all that it doesn't have enough to fill an entire hour and you can really feel it draggin at certain points, specially from Savages elimination up until the end (5/10) Also didn't care at all for the Rude/Warrior segment that took a ton of time. The Backstage promos were pretty decent though"
[5.0] "This was a fine show. This show really peaks early with a surprisingly good six-man tag match. The Royal Rumble becomes a 30-man match this year and is officially a PPV, so this show is very historic for those two reasons. Andre was great on this show again; as I'll discuss once I review the Rumble match. I really don't like Akeem. Overall this was a fine show but not one to go out of your way to watch."
[4.0] "They did better with the Royal Rumble match than last year, but the other matches dragged it down a bit. The opener was okay and I didn't even mind Duggan being there, but the next two took most of my energy for the rest of the night, especially Race vs Haku. The Rumble Match was good until Savage and Hogan got eliminated, then it took most of the excitement out of that with the winner who didn't look as impressive as he did a few years back."
[3.0] "Maybe 80s wrestling isn't for me, but i don't see what was so compelling to fans of this period. That posedown really kills my mood because it goes 20 freaking minutes! A show main evented by a pointless Rumble won by a pointless winner. I... just don't get it."
[5.0] "This is a pretty lenient rating based almost solely on the Royal Rumble match itself being one of WWE's most consistently enjoyable matches. The opener is decent but nothing special, the women's match is bad, and Haku-Race is watchable but far from a standout. The pose off was really bad as well - long, boring, and stupid, with the only real entertainment value being Warrior jumping around like a goof. If you just watch the main event and skip the rest you're definitely not missing out on much."
[3.0] "Awful show for match quality. Some of the earlier WWF PPVs are just such a rough watch. This show doesn't really have anything redeeming on it, even the Rumble match is bad."
[5.0] "Things were starting to look more like the fully-formed Royal Rumble concept by its second year; we have a full 30-man field in the Rumble, which is now firmly parked in the main event spot, and the show was promoted to an actual PPV instead of a TV special. There's still nothing on the line for the winner, though, which somewhat lessens the appeal. If they weren't giving the winner a title shot, why not at least pretend there's a special cash prize? That would certainly make sense, especially with a character like Ted DiBiase making it to the final two in the match. The undercard is a little on the weak side too - the six-man opener was decent enough, but Robin vs. Martin was short enough to come off as filler, and while I always like Haku, his match with Race was dampened by Race's abilities being noticeably diminished as he neared the end of his active career (this would be his last WWF match); Heenan was great (as always) in playing both sides throughout it though. The Rude-Warrior posing segment dragged enough that it felt like killing time, but at least was more productive in the end than the interminable Dino Bravo weightlifting segment the previous year. The Rumble concept was not quite there yet but was at least on its way."
[5.0] "Eh. The opening tag was good but then everything in between that and the Rumble was just filler. The Rumble started well enough but died off in the late third portion of the match after Hogan's early leave. Also, interesting bit of trivia. Outlaw Ron Bass shows up at this event bald, and as noted by Gorilla Monsoon "courtesy of Brutus The Barber Beefcake". That match happened at SNME in real world time, but that show wouldn't air on TV for another week on tape delay, so that must have confused fans at the time. The WWF and it's goofy pre taping."
[5.0] "An average event overall. The undercard was a mixed bag, although I enjoyed the six-man tag opener, as well as the weird albeit entertaining 'Super Posedown' segment. We cap off the night with a decent Rumble, which was historic for being the first Rumble to feature thirty men. It's an easy-to-watch show for the most part, with only a runtime of about 2.5 hours on the Network, which is hardly long at all."
[6.0] "Solid PPV. Sure, there were some dead spots in the Rumble match and the Women's title match was very heatless and really fucking boring, but there was always something going on otherwise. As far as the matches go, the opener was my personal favorite. The angle between Warrior and Rude was very WWF-ish if you know what I mean, but it started their long feud which was actually pretty damn good. Enjoyable event."
[5.0] "A very meh show overall. The opener and the rumble were decent with the middle two matches being extremely average to poor. Not a rumble to remember."
[6.0] "Zwar ein guter Opener und wieder ein guter Royal Rumble aber dann gab es Füllmaterial und dann auch diese lange Super Posedown das habe ich übersprungen. Es war ein Rewatch ich habe alles schon mal gesehen und gerade das mit dem Warrior und Rick ist so zäh. Darum, 6 Punkte."
[5.0] "Beim Opener muss ich sagen: Auch wenn die jeweils dritten Männer in jedem Team das ganze Match schon etwas runtergezogen haben wrestlerisch, war das immer noch ein solides Match und für mich halt das MOTN, weil es am meisten über die Emotion und die Dramaturgie kam, auch wenn die Story sehr einfach gehalten war. Das Womens Title Match danach ist ebenfalls solide. Hier ist es so, dass man keine wirklich Story hat, dafür ist es handwerklich gerade im Kontext der damaligen Zeit recht ansprechend. Race gegen Haku war dann wieder anders im Stil nämlich ein geradliniger Big Man Fight, aber als solcher eben auch solide. Das Royal Rumble Match selbst hat gute Momente auch mit Geschichten um Teams oder Stables oder auch Phasen, wo Allianzen und Ähnliches entstehen. Andererseits gibt es aber auch Leerlauf und jetzt nicht die richtig besonderen Aktionen. Insgesamt ein durchschnittlich solider Abschluss eines durch und durch durchschnittlich soliden PPVs, der konstant ohne Ausreißer nach oben oder unten auf diesem Niveau bleibt und daher in meinen Augen 5 Punkte verdient."
[5.0] "Our opening match is Dino Bravo & The Rougeau Bros. vs. Jim Duggan & The Hart Foundation. Okay, a little xenophobia in wrestling is one thing, but when you? re picking fights with a French Canadian you have to revaluate your tolerance just a bit. The Rougeaus are so good at the cocky-yet-cowardly heel bit I? m surprised the WWF didn? t use them as heels sooner. This one was a lot of fun. Duggan and Bravo were kept out of it for the most part, leaving Bret and the Rougeaus to carry the match. ***1/4. Next up we get Rockin? Robin vs. Judy Martin. Before the match, Sensational Sherri challenges the winner to a title match. This incarnation of the WWF Women? s Title was practically useless at this point and, outside of that Sherri match which went off on an episode of PrimeTime, it was never seen again until Vince shook the moths out of it and brought it back as part of the Jacqueline and Sable feud in 1998. They looked? competent. **. We would then get a "Super Posedown" between Rick Rude and The Ultimate Warrior. Rude won the ? Jesse the Body Award? for abdominal excellence or something, and so he felt confident enough to challenge another roided-up freak to see who had the better body. Jesse scores it for Rude (and I? d have to agree) but the fans vote for Warrior, and that? s what counts. Rude gets pissed and chokes out the Warrior with his workout bar. The best part of the whole contests was Heenan sucking up to the ? humanoids, ? which he never does. We would then get Haku vs. Harley Race. Harley had a hand in training Haku, so this is just part of an effort to put him over as a singles star. Both guys were heels at this point, but when Race was injured Heenan decided to give Haku the meaningless ? King? s? crown. Race is coming back to reclaim it. The match is okay, but really not fit for the time and place. These are two legitimate tough guys with solid wrestling skills in an era when pretty boys and gym rats were the in thing. Race? s career was already over, and he probably shouldn? t have been in there, but he wanted to put Haku over. Haku, on the other hand, was a vastly underappreciated worker during his early singles run. It wasn? t until after he lost the crown to Jim Duggan that he started a significant downturn. Not for WWF tastes, but I really liked it. **1/2. And finally it was time for the Royal Rumble Match. My personal favorite Rumble match before it got any stakes, probably because the winner wasn? t any of the usual suspects and the alliances and turns made sense without being predictable. After this, the Rumble would be used as a political tool or to elevate someone for WrestleMania, but it lost its spontaneity. ***1/2. One of my favorite Rumble PPVs, probably because it was my first one and because Hogan hadn't taken over again yet. After he took the title back, the WWF descended into the more cartoonish version that people usually think of when they think of WWF wrestling. Thumbs in the middle for Royal Rumble 1989."
[8.0] "The first full sized Rumble, and I'd say it's a good one. It definitely gets better as it goes, anyway. Didn't care much for the six man or the "pose down", women's match was decent, Haku vs. Race was fairly good, and the Rumble itself was great."
[7.0] "Good opener. Really enjoyed it even though it had a strangley heel finish and it dragged a bitime. Women's match was bad, okay finish, but Sherri was awful on promo and commentary by constantly fluffing her lines and being really annoying. I enjoyed the Warrior and Rude pose off even if it wasn't PPV quality. Two of the toughest men in the world battling in a match which I really enjoyed. There were some really stiff looking headbutts at one point and the story of the match was good. The main event, much like any Royal Rumble was very enjoyable. Loved the overarching DiBiase storyline throughout the show. Great story telling with the Mega Powers . Overall I thought it was a good show."
[8.0] "Enjoyable PPV with not very good undercard and awesome main event. Six men tag is very cool opener. Womens match is pretty bad but it has an interesting ending. I found Race vs Haku boring. Howewer maybe you will enjoy it if you like this type of classical wrestling. Royal rumble match is just great. First classical rumble with 30 men and first very good one."
[3.0] "The Rumble match itself is stacked full of big names and great wrestlers, yet they have Big John Studd win? File that under "questionable booking decisions. " The opening match wasn't bad but it went on a little long. The women's match was leaning towards bad. The "king vs. king" match of Haku vs. Race was pretty bad as well."
[3.0] "Auch wenn das Rumble-Konzept beim zweiten Versuch noch in den Kinderschuhen steckt - das hier ist ein Schuß in den Ofen. Die Undercard ist ein kleines Sammelsurium an Belanglosigkeiten, einzig der Opener ist aufgrund der Hart-Foundation und der Rougeau-Brüder noch halbwegs okay, obwohl man mit Bravo und Duggan auch ordentlich Ballast an den Hacken hat. Die Damen sind bemüht und es ist zumindest keine Vollkatastrophe, trotzdem sich da kaum jemand für interessiert. Eine potentiel bessere Partie schenkt man mit Haku und Harley Race ab - beide hätten mehr Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit nötig und vor allen Dingen verdient, dann hätte das eine schicke Begegnung werden können, aber so ist es halt nur ein kurzer Krampf. On Top gesellt sich da noch das ewig lange Segment mit Rude und dem Warrior hinzu, bei welchem man von einen Fremdschäm-Fettnapf in den nächsten hüpft. Der Rumble selbst steckt dann voller Main-Event Potential, hat aber noch keine tiefere Bedeutung für Titel oder Stories, zudem ist das handwerklich überschaubar und sehr brawllastig, wobei das Match in seiner Gesamtheit auch mit dem blassen Sieger stellenweise recht unbeholfen wirkt. Mir hat diese Veranstaltung nur wenig Spaß gemacht und darum ist das für mich irgendwie auch nicht ausreichend."
[5.0] "The non-Rumble matches are better than the Rumble itself. The 3 vs 3 is a great match, I really like how the Hart Foundation had a strong impact in that match. Women's match was boring, King Haku vs Harley Race a decent fight, better than expected. My issue is with the Royal Rumble match, once again it does not give a chance for Wrestlemania. It starts well with the Demolition mini-feud, and I like how Hogan and Savage had tension between them. The final part is hard to watch. Too long and boring for most minutes with all big men. Someone would enjoy the choice of the winner but to me it's weird to push someone who will not get over for that victory."
[0.0] "I'm the lone weirdo who hates this event. That's fine. Let's take a look at the card: You've got Jim Duggan and the Hart Foundation going over Dino Bravo and The Fabulous Rougeaus in a drag of a Best 2-out-of-3 Falls Match. Predictable match, fit for an non-televised event -- not a big-time PPV! Next you have Rockin' Robin beating Judy Martin in an uuugly far-cry from the matches that Sasha Banks and Bayley are putting on these days. Next you have King Haku beating Harley Race in a methodical bore. And lastly you have a seemingly-lasting-forever Royal Rumble that stars the likes of Akeem, Ax, Bad News Brown, Brutus Beefcake, Hercules, Luke, Ron Bass, Smash, The Barbarian and The Warlord... with Big John Studd winning! Ugh. Kill me. It's amazing that so much great talent was involved (Andre, Arn Anderson, Hulk Hogan, Jake the Snake, Mr. Perfect, Randy Savage, Shawn Michaels, Tito Santana, and Tully Blanchard), yet this event still sucked so, so bad. It just goes to show you that a horribly booked event can be less than the sum of its parts."
[4.0] "Der Opener war halbwegs o. k.. Nichts besonderes, war halt das übliche "USA über alles" und das obwohl 5 Kanadier im Ring waren. Das Damen-Match konnte man bequem vergessen. Frauen-Wrestling wie ich es ganz und gar nicht mag. Auch das Aufeinandertreffen der beiden Kings war alles andere als gut. Handelsüblicher Brawl ohne jegliche Höhepunkte. Der Rumble war dann extrem stark besetzt. Hier war wirklich alles was Rang und Namen hat dabei. Umso erstaunlicher wie man so ein Match dann dermaßen verbooken kann. Das Match war lange Zeit wirklich gut und unterhaltsam und zwar genau bis zu dem Punkt bis Hogan raus war. Ab da ging es ganz steil bergab. Das Problem war das nur noch Jobber und Midcarder im Match waren und das Match noch 20 Minuten gehen sollte. Einziger ernst zu nehmender Teilnehmer war noch DiBiase, der den Sieg auch wirklich gebraucht hätte. Aber nein es mußte Big John Studd gewinnen. Ein Mann der zumindest seit 1985 nicht, aber auch gar nichts gerissen hatte. Und viel schlimmer auch später absolut nicht reissen sollte. Bei der folgenden WrestleMania war er nicht mal dabei. Und der vollkommen zerstörte Mega-Heel DiBiase sollte in einem Undercard-Match sein. Alles, aber auch wirklich alles falsch gemacht WWF. Ganz klarer Daumen nach unten."
[5.0] "Der Opener ist gut aufgebaut, hat abwechslungsreiches Wrestling zu bieten und die Crowd geht richtig drauf ab (8/10). Den anschließenden Posing-Contest kann man mal so einbauen, ist aber für mich nur von mittlerem Unterhaltungswert, da es zumindest am Ende noch ein bisschen Action zu sehen gibt (5/10). Die Damen sind sehr schwach (2/10). Bei Haku vs. Harley Race geht es gleich tüchtig zur Sache, jedoch entwickelt sich das Ganze natürlich nicht zur größten Wrestlingkunst; das Match leidet auch unter der Heel-vs. -Heel-Konstellation, hier hätte man im Vorfeld einen der beiden klar turnen müssen (5/10). Der Rumble ist sicher noch nicht so gut komponiert wie in späteren Zeiten, nach dem Ausscheiden von Savage und Hogan ist die Luft eigentlich raus, trotzdem kann man einige gute Spots und spektakuläre Eliminierungen einbauen. Dem Sieger hat der Sieg leider nicht mehr so viel gebracht, daher ist dessen Wahl eher unglücküch, dennoch würden ohne diesen Rumble-Sieg heute wahrscheinlich viele den Namen Big John Studd nicht kennen (10/20). Gesamt: 5, 0."
[4.0] "6 Man Tag Match war sehr langatmig, viele Pausen, Bret meines Erachtens nach dem 1. Fall zu lange im Ring, der 2. Fall kam so echt nicht gut. Schlussphase und Finish waren okay und mal was neues (* 1/4). Womens Match hatte viele unsauber ausgeführte Moves, ein unlogisches Finish. Es gab jedoch wenige Ansätze, die man als okay bezeichnen kann. Dennoch insgesamt eher schwach (1/2 *). Die Szene mit Slick und den "Twin Towers" ist zum Fremdschämen. Der Pose Contest war ganz witzig. Race vs. Haku war sogar eigentlich ganz gut (** 3/4). Das Rumble Match war insgesamt okay. Ein paar interessante Momente, einen unvorhersehbaren aber akzeptablen Sieger und eine permanente Spannung. Auf der anderen Seite hat man einen André the Giant mit Schlangenphobie und einen Akeem, der kurz vor seiner Eliminierung urplötzlich Gleichgewichtsstörungen hat. Die beiden Bigmen hat man leider auf eine schlechte Weise eliminieren lassen. Dennoch im ganzen ganz okay (** 3/4). Somit kann man den PPV knapp als ausreichend bezeichnen und kommt auf 3, 88 von 10 Punkten."
[5.0] "Solider bis guter Opener, vielleicht ein paar Minuten zu lang. Das Damen-Match war nix, der Posedown Rude vs. Warrior war komplett aus heutiger Sicht deplaziert und unnötig; da ich nicht weiß, wie man damals dazu stand, ziehe ich hierfür mal keinen Punkt. Für mich hat das bei einem PPV -und auch noch in dieser Länge- nichts verloren. Haku vs Race war ok, zumindest hatte ich gar keine Erwartung, da ich mit beiden im Ring nicht viel anfangen kann. Rumble war auch gerade noch ok, leider ein "komischer" Sieger, wirkt heute sehr random, wieso gerade Studd als Sieger gewählt wurde. Evtl ja wegen seiner Statur. Das ein oder andere Segment gab es im Match, Demolition zu Beginn hat man genutzt, um den Zuschauern zu zeigen, dass wirklich alles passieren kann; Andre flüchtet vor der Python über die Seile ins Aus. Relativ gut gelöst war das Mega-Powers-Segment. Alles in allem ausreichend, das mich nichts so richtig mitreißen konnte."
[4.0] "Mehr als 4 Punkte ist hier leider nicht drin. Das Tag Team Match war ok aber auch schon das beste Match des Abends. Das Damen-Match war für mich ein kompletter Reinfall, das Race vs Haku Match war leider nicht auf meiner DVD und beim Pose-Down konnte man schon fast hören wie Vince abspritzt. Der Junge ist damals echt ins falsche Business. Er hätte Promoter von Bodybuilding-Wettbewerben werden sollen, dann wäre er im siebten Himmel. Der Rumble selbst hatte hier und da nette Stories, hauptsächlich natürlich rund um die Mega Powers, aber nachdem Savage und Hogan weg waren, war auch die Luft aus diesem Rumble komplett raus, da man nun keinen großen Publikumsliebling mehr hatte dem man den Sieg gegönnt hätte. Studd als Sieger wirkt wirklich fehl am Platz aus heutiger Sicht. Aber letztendlich war der Rumble damals ja nur ein Sonderevent der keinerlei Auswirkungen auf Wrestlemania oder sonstwas hatte, also hat man sich wohl gedacht man gibt dem alten Haudegen nochmal einen kleinen Prestigesieg. Hogan zeigt sich hier übrigens mal wieder von seiner schlechtesten Babyface Seite. Schlechter Verlierer und er fällt Savage in den Rücken. Alles voll ok für ihn, aber als Sid 1992 das gleiche mit ihm gemacht hat, war er schockiert. Ich sags immer wieder gerne: Hogan war eines der schlechtesten Babyfaces aller Zeiten und als totaler Heuchler gebookt."
[5.0] "1. Opener war gut. Hätte aber wie einige andere die Foundation gegen Rougeaus lieber gesehen. (3*)Das Damen Match war schlecht. (3/4*)3. Haku gegen Race weder gut noch schlecht. (1 3/4*)Auf den Posedown Wettbewerb hätte ich verzichten können. Trotzdem war es erträglicher als der Bravo Crap im Vorjahr. Der ME war gut. So kam es zum Aufeinandertreffen Browns & Savage die damals eine Fehde am Laufen hatten als auch das Aufeindertreffen Hogans gegen die Twin Towers. Michaels & Perfect konnten in diesem Match positiv überraschen. Leider fehlte doch das gewisse Etwas um sich aus der Masse der Rumbles herauszuheben. Weniger gefiel mir, dass man schon zum zweiten Mal hintereinander den falschen Sieger hatte. Hier hätte ruhig DiBiase siegen können. Auch Hogan spielt wieder einmal den schlechten Verlierer. (3*)Der PPV war in Ordnung. Leider gab es aber auch nichts was einem länger in Erinnerung bleiben sollte."
[7.0] "This is still my favorite Royal Rumble of all time. The 6 Man was an entertaining opening match. The women's match was fine. Haku vs. Harley Race was nothing to complain about. The Royal Rumble itself gets a 5-Star rating from me. This match managed to tell many stories all during one match. Demolition starting the match against each other & choosing to fight each other was a awesome begining. You had the downfall of Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage's friendship, The Twin Towers attempt to overpower Hogan, Hogan cheating to eliminate Big Bossman, Ted DiBiase attempting to buy the victory by buying #30, and Big John Studd's surprise victory. Overall a very good 7 of 10 from me."
[6.0] "Erneut ein mehr als durchschnittlicher Rumble mit mehr oder weniger belanglosen Matches in der Under- und Midcard. The Fabulous Rougeaus zeigen im Opener, dass sie ein durchaus gutes Tag Team waren, wohingegen mir das Women's World Title Match gar nicht gefallen hat. Beide Ladies haben/hatten zwar mehr Talent als viele der Diven heute, aber bei dem Match hats bei mir einfach nicht geklickt. Überrascht war ich hingegen vom Match Haku gegen Harley Race. Gerade Letzterer zeigte, dass er ein Großer seines Fachs war. Beim Rumble selbst gefiel mir, dass zunächst Demolition aufeinander los gegangen sind nur um sich dann -natürlich- gegen Andre zu verbünden. Die Teilnahme Andres zeigte aber auch, dass keiner im Roster glaubhaft in der Lage war, diesen zu eleminieren. Die Storie mit der Schlange wirkte da doch sehr abstrus. Cool und für eine ganze Weile einzigartig war da auch der Auftritt vom Warlord: Rein in den Ring und schon raus über das oberste Seil. Die Explosion der Megapowers wurde auch entsprechend gut eingeleitet. Nervig im Rumble fand ich eigentlich nur Akeem; der frühere OMG hat hier eine grauenhafte Leistung abgeliefert."
[5.0] "Leicht unterdurchschnittlicher PPV. Der Opener war in Ordnung. Das zweite und dritte Match waren schwach. Der Rumble an sich war durchschnittlich ohne die absoluten Höhepunkte außer Hogan/Savage. Studd als Sieger war schon überraschend."
[7.0] "Wirklich cooles Opening Match, Posing Contest war gut gemacht und Nick Bockwinkel steckt am Ende sogar einen Bump für den Warrior ein. Das Frauen Match ging in Ordnung. Ist das nicht Tugboat Taylor als einer der "Träger" von Haku? Den Kampf der beiden "Legit Toughguys" fand ich okay. Den Rumble zum Abschluss fand ich über die gesamte Länge gut und unterhaltsam, zumal, anders als es glaube ich im Vorjahr der Fall war, auf etliche damalige Fehden Bezug genommen wurde und nie Langeweile aufkam, mehr als eine Stunde gutes Wrestling am Stück. Mir hat die zweite Royal Rumble-Show viel Spaß gemacht, empfehlenswerter PPV."
[5.0] "Der Opener ging in Ordnung, das Damen Match und insbesondere der Posing-Contest war schwach. Letzteren hab ich teilweise sogar geskippt. Der Rumble selbst konnte, für die damalige Zeit, trotz fehlender Bedeutung, fast die über die komplette Zeit überzeugen. Gab aber natürlich bessere Rumbles in der WWE Geschichte."
[6.0] "Ein durchaus gelungener Royal Rumble, Das 6-Man Tag Team Match und das Womens Championship Match fehlte es etwas an Klasse, aber das 30-Man Royal Rumble Match an sich, war gar nicht mal so schlecht."
[6.0] "Opener war OK - ohne die Beteiligung Duggans und Bravos wär wrestlerisch sicher mehr drin gewesen. Aber die Stimmung hat gepasst. Danach nahezu sinnfreies Rumgepose und ein Damenkampf, der lieber nicht erwähnt werden sollte, sowie ein Königsmatch, dessen einzig wirklich gute Aktion die abschließende war. Der Rumble selbst war dann in Ordnung, überschaubare Anzahl Teilnehmer im Ring und von der Hoganschen Standard-5-Minuten abgesehen keine absolute Dominanz. Das gefiel. Pluspunkte gibt's für's Kommentatorenduo. Ein Rumble, den man einmal sehen kann - ein Muss ist er aber nicht."
[5.0] "Der Opener war ganz nett. Die restliche Card dagegen schwach und wenig interessant. Das eigentliche Rumble Match fand ich recht unterhaltsam. Es fing schon interessant an mit Ax und Smash. Dazu wurden einige Storys während des Matches weitergeführt wie die mit Jake und Andre. Auch zwischen Hogan und Savage kam es zu ersten kleinen differenzen. Mr. Perfect und Shawn Michaels haben mir im Match gut gefallen und konnten bereits hier schon mit guten Leistungen überzeugen. John Studd als Sieger überraschend aber vollkommen ok."
[4.0] "Überraschender Sieg von Big John Studd, hätte mit einem Sieg von Hulk Hogan oder Randy Savage gerechnet, aber John Studds Sieg ging auch in Ordnung, da ich zur damaligen Zeit als Mark großer Fan von ihm war. Rest war doch sehr entäuschend, wobei ich mir vom Opener mehr erwartet hätte. Rückblickend eine unterdurchschnittliche Show."
[5.0] "War zwar besser als der 88er Rumble dennoch in der Geschichte der Rumbles im unteren Bereich meiner gesehenen Rumbles landet. Das Two out of three falls Match war das beste Match in der schwachen Midcard des Rumbles 89 (**). Womans und das andere Match waren Langweilig oder zu kurz (*). Rumble hatte zwar den glaubwürdigeren Sieger wie im Jahr zuvorl, trotzdem nur mittelmaß (**1/2)"
[5.0] "Das Six Man Tag war in Ordnung, der Rest bis zjm Rumble sehr schwach. Der Rumble an sich war besser als der aus dem Jahre 1988 und durchaus gelungen, insgesamt muss man aber sagen, dass dem Ganzen damals noch die größere Bedeutung fehlte und der Rumble daher auch nur im Mittelfeld der Rumbles verschwindet. Insgesamt aber ganz in Ordnung der erste PPV-Rumble, wenn auch mit dem Pose-Down ein eher seltsames Segment vorhanden ist, dass man einmal sieht und dann prinzipiell immer wieder skippen würde."
[6.0] "Bis auf den Opener, den ich wirklich gut fand, ist mir fast nichts in Erinnerung geblieben.. Das Rumble Match kann aber schon überzeugen, nur gibt es einfach viel bessere. Ich vergebe hier 6 Punkte, da der Rumble in seiner Gesamtheit schon befriedigend ist."
[8.0] "Alles, was vor der Battle Royal war, kann man in die Tonne kloppen, aber der Royal Rumble entschädigte dann für den aus dem Vorjahr! Fast ein genau umgekehrter Rumble wie der von 1988."
[6.0] "Der erste "wirkliche" Royal Rumble, und er überraschte positiv! Zum einen war Studd eine wirkliche Überrachung (hätte angesichts des Line-Ups eher mit Hogan gerechnet), und auch der Rest der Card war überraschend erträglich. Einzig und allein das Match zwischen Haku & Race fiel ab - eine negativer Beigeschmack, denn beide sind durchaus in der Lage zu etwas Besserem. Eher ein Brawl denn ein wirkliches Wrestlingmatch, schade!"
[4.0] "Das Rumble Match bot einige schöne Momente, war insgesamt aber nicht eines der besseren Matches seiner Art. Das Six Men Tag Match im Opener war gut, aber mehr auch nicht. Haku vs Race war ein recht stiff geführtes Match, was es natürlich noch lange nicht gut macht. Alles in allem eine erträgliche Show."
[6.0] "das rumble match brachte den split der mega powers, und mit studd einem sieger mit wohl fast niemand rechnen konnte wenn man bedenkt das mit hulk und randy 2 top faces und mit andre ein solider heel am start waren. und studd eher in einer neutralen rolle bei seiner wiederkehr agierte."
