Scarily, it might not even be the worst pay per view that WCW put on in 1998, as Road Wild and World War 3 were absolutely awful as well. Juventud Vs Silver King was watchable and Raven Vs Saturn was genuinely a great match, but outside of those two bouts, everything on this show blew. Terrible wrestling, folks on pay per view that shouldnt have been (Anvil, Bulldog, Cat), insulting storylines/angles (Drunk Hall, Buffs fake neck injury), filler that was better suited to being on television rather than pay per view (Jericho Vs Fake Goldberg, Hennig Vs Malenko), and an all-time atrocious Main Event that took one of the best gimmick matches ever created (although some will disagree) and turned it from a brutal feud ending battle into a clumsy boring slog that made no sense and did very little to elevate the eventual winner. This show is so bad that even trenchant WCW fans online back in the day were holding their hands up and admitting that it was bad. Honestly I cant believe that they typed up the run sheet for this one and no one stopped to say Are we SURE we actually want to put this on pay per view? Is this REALLY the best we can do? . I know its 1998 WCW, but come on, Id expect better from even THEM than to shovel out this dreck and actually dare to demand that people pay for the privilege of watching it. Im personally amazed that Bischoff put on three shows as bad as Road Wild, Fall Brawl and World War 3 in a four month period and still managed to keep his job for nearly another year afterwards, those three shows are THAT bad. |

Fake Goldberg, Hall alcoholism bs, Bulldog getting hurt because of a trapdoor in the ring that was there for a spot that was not worth it, the Steiner match just ending with nothing, and, of course, the War Games match, if you can even call it that, because they basically changed all the rules. Whoever gets the pin gets a title shot, well then what's the point of the teams, especially since you are allowed to pin your teammates. There is so much more I could say about that terrible match, and that match alone undoes any good created by Saturn/Raven or Juve/King, so when there is even more bad piled on top of that, I can't rate this show any higher than a 0. |

Bulldog really struggled at times despite being the workhouse for his team, credit to him for carrying on with the match. **1/2 [2nd match] Bait and switch #1 the fans got worked super hard and it made me sad. Bet mini Goldberg had the time of his life though. DUD [3rd match] Nothing match with zero heat. ** [4th match] Bait and switch #2. DUD [5th match] Not great for a Cruiserweight match, lack of fan interest made it worse. *** [6th match] Best thing so far, but still had it's moments. ***1/4 [7th match] Maybe not quite bait and switch, but still short-changing. **1/2 [8th match] I know it's probably a storyline, but still sets a very bad example, thank god it wasn't made into a full blown work angle though ** [Main] Admittedly I've not seen many Wargames matches, but I still think this is easily one of the worst. Very little action, and little excitement apart from the entrances. * I paid nothing to watch this show, yet I want my money back! |

Warrior coming back piqued my interest and so did the Wargames which sounded good on paper. What we got was a near 100% misfire throughout the entire show! Juventud/Silver King and Raven/Saturn were the only ones really trying. This PPV set the standard for what WCW would become in their twilight years. The fake injury in the Steiner match, Scott Hall being allowed to wrestle messed up or at the very least faking it to turn his messed up personal life into a story line, Bulldog getting injured and shortening his already shortened life span and the war games debacle with Warrior's crazy ideas makes for one of THE worst WCW PPV's of all time! |

Miller's getting a push for some reason, even though he's awful on the mic and in the ring. The Steiners have been feuding for so long and this was going to be THE match, and then it ends in a fake injury from Buff. Juvi and Silver King put on a solid match, but Juvi's lost some of his intensity over the last few weeks. Saturn v Raven was the highlight of the match, with Kidman attacking Raven and Saturn holding his own against the Flock. Everything after that is also skippable. Scott Hall's drunk or high or whatever and is in a 12-minute match with the poor Konnan who has to deal with his trash, Malenko and Hennig, while actually feeling like a grudge match, is slow and boring. The main event is a travesty. Oh, let's also not forget that Davey Boy suffered a real serious back injury in his match because he landed on the trap door, something that quite possibly played a large role in his eventual death. |

Der Opener wirkt nicht nur uninspiriert, er ist auch der Anfang vom Ende des British Bulldog, denn Smith bumpt zweimal auf die für den Entrance des Warriors verborgene Falltür und verletzt sich dabei schwer am Rücken. Dies wird ihn in die Schmerzmittelabhängigkeit treiben, das Ende der Geschichte ist bekannt. Auch der Rest ist mehr als unglücklich - Goldberg ist gar nicht da, so dass sich Jericho mit einem verkleideten Jobber begnügt, Smiley vs. Miller darf hier nie auf die Card gelangen, und die Steiners ziehen mit Bagwell einen miesen Angle durch, der sich wie zwei ununterbrochene Wochen Marienhof anfühlt. Kurze Lichtblicke, wie das allenfalls TV-taugliche Match der Cruiserweights, wo keiner weiss, wie Silver King da in den Spot geraten ist, oder das immerhin ansehbare Match zwischen Raven und Saturn, werden gleich wieder durch die Arbeitsverweigerungen der Herren Hennig, Malenko, Hall oder Konnan getrübt. Das führt uns zu einem Mainer, der sinnbefreiter gar nicht ablaufen kann. Page hat Moral und der Hitman Berufsehre, aber alles andere, was da kreucht und fleucht, hat entweder keinen Bock, kann einfach nicht mehr oder konnte oder wollte noch nie. Dazu dann das unsägliche Rein-in-den-Käfig-raus-aus-dem-Käfig mit dem Warrior, der anfangs sogar noch einmal vom Renegade gedoubelt wird. Am Ende kann er dann nicht mehr heraus, wo er doch zu Beginn sogar noch hinein teleportieren konnte? Was auch immer, ein unsäglicher Krampf. Eine der bis hierhin schlechtesten WCW-Großveranstaltungen überhaupt. |

The Jericho/Goldberg angle is fine I suppose but it had no purpose as WCW refused to do an actual match between them. Smiley/Miller is not a good match and should not have made PPV. Steiner vs. Steiner had some potential but was quickly scrapped in favor of an INTERMINABLE fake injury angle with Buff, which served no purpose anyway since when the swerve was finally revealed they barely did damage to Rick anyway. Juvi/Silver finally gives us a good match on the card, and Saturn/Raven is actually quite fantastic, which is the only reason this even gets 1 point. Hennig/Malenko is decent at best with a lame DQ finish, and then we get to the really awful stuff. It's the PPV debut of Drunk Hall! Watch as this barely functioning alcoholic is barely held together by his enabling buddies. Laugh as Hall wrestles drunk and drinks during matches. Listen to the hilarious commentary crack jokes. It's amazing Scott Hall is not dead today considering the state he was in and the environment around him at the time. I felt sick after watching the match, which by the way was quite terrible even apart from the drinking stuff. The main event, wow, if you want to waste 20 minutes on pure stupidity, this is your stop. The match is painfully dull until the Warrior starts filling the ring with smoke and teleporting. Awful, awful stuff on most of this card. |

Zudem bleibt das Match auch nur die anchließende Verletzung des Bulldogs in Erinnerung, durch die seine WCW Karriere den Bach runter ging und er dann in die Abhängigkeit verfiel. (2*) 2. Jericho gegen Fake Goldberg war ein tolles Segment. Schade das es nie zum großen Showdown in der WCW der beiden kam. Goldberg hatte woll Angst, Jericho würde ihn outwrestlen und besser bei der Crowd ankommen als er. (o. W. ) 3. Smiley gegen The Cat war Mist. Nicht mal Nitro würdig. (1/2*) 4. Die Steiner Farce geht in die nächste Runde. Der Brawl beginnt interessant, wird aber abrupt abgebrochen. Ein richtiger Schlag ins Gesicht der Fans die endlich den Pay Off sehen wollten. Eigentlich würde ich hier 0 geben, aber durch den Schlag ins Gesicht der zahlenden Fans -. (-*). 5. Juventud gegen Silver King war okay. Die ein oder andere Minute mehr wäre nicht schlecht gewesen. (2 3/4*) 6. Raven/Saturn siehe Guide. (3 1/2*) MotN. 7. Auch als Malenko/Hennig hätte man mehr machen können. So lieferte man den Fans eher eine kurze enttäuschende Vorstellung. (2*) 8. Hall gegen Konnan war schlecht. Allein die Alkoholiker Story dahinter ist schon schlecht, wenn man bedenkt das Hall wirklich einer ist. Zu all dem Überfluss kommt er auch noch mit einen Drink zum Ring und schlürft ihn noch vor und während des Matches runter. (-***) 9. ME war enttäuschend. Riesiger Starauflauf aus dem nichts gemacht und der nur zum Aufbau von Hogan/Warrior 2 dient. Warum Sting hier mitmacht obwohl er am nächsten Tag eh ein Titel Match hat erschließt sich mir auch nicht. (1 3/4*) Wieder eine enttäuschende Vorstellung. Den ME werde ich hier nicht diskutierren. Warum Goldberg nicht einen Auftritt hat erschließt sich mir nicht. Das er den Titel nicht verteidigt ist okay, da er am nächsten Tag bei Nitro dafür gegen Sting antritt. Das Jericho Segment war gut, auch wenn sich die Geschichte in den Sand verlaufen wird. Die TT Titel sind anscheinend verschwunden |

Aber diesmal kann man sich das Ganze trotzdem relativ schmerzfrei am Stück anschauen ohne allzu große körperliche Schmerzen zu haben. Der Opener ist o. k. , mehr nicht aber auch nicht weniger. Das Jericho vs Goldberg-Match ist unterhaltsame Comedy wie man es von Jericho gewohnt ist. Smiley vs The Cat ist MMA-Bullshit der in einem Wrestling-Ring nichts verloren hat. Das Bruder-Duell der Steiners hätte von der Story her ein Show-Stealer werden können. Und das Match beginnt auch recht ordentlich, aber der Verletzungs-Angle von Bagwell ist wirklich unterirdisch und zerstört das gesamte Match. Vorallem da der Angle länger dauert als das komplette Match. Für mich das Lowlight des Abends. Danach folgen mit dem Cruiserweight und dem Raven's Rules-Match die beiden besten Matches der Veranstaltung. Beide sind keine Klassiker und haben meiner Meinung nach auch nichts im Matchguide verloren, aber man kann sie sich gut anschauen. Henning vs Malenko hätte der zweite Show-Stealer werden können. Aber auch hier zerstört das Finish das Match. Von den beiden Main Events sollte man sowieso nichts erwarten, da sie mit nWo-Beteiligung sind und diese sich in nahezu 100% der Fälle sehr negativ auf die Matchqualität auswirkt. So auch hier. Konnan vs Hall war grausam und das War Games Match war o. k. bis Hogan kam und dann ging der übliche Blödsinn los. Insgesamt wieder eine unterdurchschnittliche Show ohne nennenswerte Höhepunkte, aber auch ohne allzu grausame Tiefpunkte. Gnädige 5 Punkte mit Tendenz zu 4 Punkten. |

Jericho gegen Mini Goldberg, Steiner Bruderduell mit den Bagwell Angle, Konnan gegen Hall sind alle zumindest unterhaltsam. Saturn gegen Raven ist gut, aber auch unter den Möglichkeiten Beider. Rest ist da, aber weder wirklich schlecht noch irgendwie positiv. Alles konzentriert sich auf die War Games. Eine nie da gewesene Anzahl an Top Stars, und Stevie Ray. Der ganze Event ist auf die Konfrontation Hogan gegen Warrior aufgebaut. Und das ist sofort vorbei, sofern es startete. Der Rest im Mainer begügte sich eh aufs Minimalste bis gar nichts zu tun. Hätte der Main Event etwas rausgerissen, dann wäre der Event gar irgendwie ok gewesen. So halt darunter, aber dennoch reicht es für 4 Punkte. |

Wrestlerisch waren keine Glanzleistungen dabei, aber unter dem Strich hat mich die Show gut unterhalten. Das Verletzungs-Angle von Buff Bagwell wurde meines Erachtens super gemacht d. h. so gut, dass man es für echt halten konnte, auch wenn das Ganze etwas arg lange dauerte, aber eben u. a. dadurch "realistisch" wirkte. Malenko gegen Hennig im Ring gegeneinander zu sehen, fand ich interessant. Konnan gegen Hall ging okay, Scott Halls Trunkenbold-Gimmick hatte schon etwas, auch wenn seine wrestlerische Klasse hier nur noch halb herauskommt. Beim Main Event lohnen die Worte nicht, war okay. |

Während Alex Wright und Disco halbwegs bemüht sind, interessiert den Bulldog und Neidhart das alles überhaupt nicht. Herauskommt dann ein Match, das so vielleicht in eine B-Wochenshow gepasst hätte, aber nicht in einem PPV. Gleiches gilt eigentlich auch für alle Matches bis auf das ansehnliche Raven vs Saturn Match. Die Hälfte ist gar kein richtiges Match, sondern am Ende nur ein längeres Angle und der Rest wurde ohne Sinn und Verstand auf die Card geklatscht, weil man dachte der Main Event trägt sich selbst. Man hat sich nicht mal die Mühe gemacht, den amtierenden Champ bei der Show auftreten zu lassen. Auch ne Möglichkeit n Title-Run in den Sand zu setzen. Der Main Event setzt dem ganzen dann die Krone auf. A) sind die Regeln vollkommen hahnebüchen und b) ist das Match an sich auch noch völlig belanglos, da eh alles auf die Warrior/Hogan Konfrontation wartet, die dann eine Minute dauert und danach ist das Ding auch schon rum. Und zu allem Überfluss hat Sting am nächsten Abend eh n World Title Match bekommen. Seine Teilnahme an dem ganzen Kram war also total unnötig. Hier machte sich dann doch schon langsam bemerkbar, dass bei WCW irgendwie das Konzept verloren gegangen ist, das bis zum Ende der Liga auch nie wieder gefunden werden sollte. Tragisch ist dabei einerseits auch, dass die Crowd hier mitunter durchaus heiß war, aber am Ende nur Unsinn vorgesetzt bekommen hat und andererseits, dass der Bulldog sich verletzte und später ohne ein weiteres PPV Match von Bischoff vor die Tür gesetzt wurde... |
