Piper and Hogan were allergic to quality in-ring work at this point in their careers and this is the event that epitomizes their sheer incompetence as they cobble up what is potentially the worst and most dangerous cage match of all time. If nothing else, its certainly the most confusing with no one in or outside the cage even pretending to understand the rules. |

Whether or not that was largely due to Luger's inability to wrestle or not, I wanted skip ahead but somehow found it within me to continue watching. The Piper and Hogan match was just... awful. I really tried to like it but as disjointed as this card was the negatives largely outweighed what few gems were here. |

Best non-title Cruiserweight match for a while here. **** [2nd match] Could almost be described as a squash (and I'm rating it as such) with how little offense Gedo got in. Gedo scarily misinterpreted Jericho's top rope Frankensteiner also. DUD [3rd match] Very fast-paced match with some scary-looking-but-safe bumps. Eddie got tons of heat for going after Rey's mask. Perfect finish also, absolutely amazing. ****1/2 [4th match] A poor match but showed Mongo's arsenal of moves. Unexpected run-in also. *1/2 [5th match] Quite a well booked intergender match that had some heat to it, I just wish I knew the storyline behind it, as the commentary didn't help someone going in blind. ** [6th match] Hennig's selling was a little comedic, but was nice to see some fire from Flair. *** [7th match] Nothing special, but for once WCW had a fair leaning-towards outright advantage for once. Zbyszko was a good but loud ref. ** [8th match] Their best encounter by far, enjoyed them destroying Halloween Havoc's elaborate set. Rare to see Liz getting involved physically also. ***1/2 [Main] Piper's offense is still awful, I think the Cage helped him immensely. The whole concept of Cage matches once again gets voided pretty quickly. And speaking of the Cage... I can't believe they climbed this thing, or that Savage dived off it... Crazy, all three of them. Still a very bad PPV Main however. 1/2* nothing really worth seeing except for 2 out of the 3 cruiserweight matches, everything else is skippable. |

Yuji Nagata gegen Ultimo Dragon ist ein knackiger Styles Clash als Opener, was Nagata gewinnen kann. Danach gibt es einen seltenen WCW auftritt von Gedo, der gegen Jericho verliert, was auch kein besonderes Match war. Rey Mysterio gegen Eddie Guerrero danach war das klare MOTN und ist ein absoluter Klassiker. Man hat es danach oft versucht nochmal zu wiederholen, aber nie mehr erreicht. Diese unglaubliche Geschwindigkeit, die die beiden das ganze Match über hinlegen ist einfach heute noch beeindruckend. Aus der ohnehin guten Cruiserweight Division der WCW ist das das beste Match, das noch durch den Sieg von Rey gekrönt wird. Alex Wright gegen Steve McMichael war danach schwach, immerhin gewinnt Wright. Goldberg greift ein, macht seinen ersten PPV Appearance und startet die Fehde mit McMichael. Jacqueline gegen Disco Inferno war ein typisches Comedy Ding, was dafür zu lange ging. Danach gibt es das US Titlematch zwischen Curt Henning und Ric Flair, was wieder eine Steigerung war. Lex Luger gegen Scott Hall ist dann auf ähnlichem Niveau, heute nicht mehr wirklich sehenswert. Ganz anders dagegen Randy Savage gegen DDP, die ein weiteres Match in ihrer langen Fehde zeigen, das wieder recht gut und intensiv war. Netter Brawl, wobei dann Randy Savage gewinnt. Naja und im ME gibt es das Rematch der letzten Starrcade Ausgabe und wieder als Non Titlematch, dafür im Steelcage. Gefühlt musste man Sting vs Hogan ewig hinauszögern und mit sowas die Zwischenzeit füllen. Das match war nichts besonders und steht einfach komplett im Schatten der Sting Storyline, was dann auch im Aftermath zu sehen ist. Die NWO gewinnt am Ende trotz des Sieges für Piper die Überhand. Seltsamer Main Event, aber eine wirkliche Schwäche hat der PPV imo nicht und weiß konstant zu unterhalten. |

Reliving it in retrospect, WCW was really great, I loved the pump and circumstances about WCW shows the product so "american" so larger than life and so colorful that WCW had, it takes me to a period in history of United States with a great economy and prosperity, before any economic crisis of the new millenium, and I think that this show represent it at its best, and it remids me why I fell so much in love for Sport Entertainment when I was Younger, for the Larger than life characters, the stories that Pro Wrestling tell and the bizzarre and colorful world that it is. I think that this show is probably the most famous Halloween Havoc mainly for one reason: The Match between Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio that imposed the standard for any Cruiserweight match in US to this days (incredible how at NXT Halloween Havoc Santos Escobar entered with a Tribute Wrestling Gear to the one that Rey Mysterio Had that night in Las Vegas). I personally don't enjoy that much the High Flying matches but I can recognize it as one of the best matches ever, one for the ages that will go on in history as one of the best matches in the carrear of both men. Beyond this match we had some other great matches. I am getting a culture about many thing I did not know about Pro Wrestling, I was in fact surprised to know that Gedo Wrestler in WCW! and his match against Jericho was good, as was good the opener between Yuji Nagata and Ultimo Dragon. One of the great things about WCW was the cooperation with NJPW and the ability to bring many of Japanese Wrestler to america brining that style that know is so popular to the US. Thats why in my opinion (and I am speaking as Huge WWE Fan), WCW back in the days was so much more complete and gorgeous than WWF: It had the Cruiserweights that delivered the fireworks in the ring, Japan and all the strong style and great and larger than life main eventers as Macho Man, Goldberg, DDP, Hogan, Piper and... Sting. Speaking of Sting I always said that 1997 was the biggest year in Wrestling History, we had the rise of the Austin Era, We had the first ever Hell in a Cell, the Montreal Screwjob, the first ever ECW PPV, this incredible and historic Halloween havoc and one of the biggest build up to a Main Event in History between Sting and Hogan for that year Starrcade. The Match itself will be remembered as a flop but the build up was fucking amazing and H. Havoc's Main Event was incredible not as a in ring point of view but as a Starrpower point of view with the Steel Cage Match between Piper and Hogan and the Whole Sting's Vigilant storyline surrounding it. It was Great, I loved and I am a love Hollywood Hogan as character, way more than the Yellow and Red classic Hulk Hogan... I love this show and in my opinion it is a must for any fan that want to get a culture about that historical period in Pro Wrestling variegated story. |

Das war ein guter, kompakter Opener. Jericho gegen Gedo danach ist ziemlich einseitig für Jericho, ist aber zumindest zum Runterkommen vor dem MOTN gut platziert. Dieses ist dann nicht nur MOTN, sondern auch eines der besten Matches im Mainstream Wrestling überhaupt. Richtig hohes Tempo gleich vom Start weg, ein Mysterio der krasse Spots zeigt gegen einen guten Heel-Guerrero, der seine Technik als Folterwerkzeug einsetzt, wobei Mysterio immer wiederHopespots bekommt, woraus das Match seine Spannung bezieht. Am Ende schafft Rey dann tatsächlich den Upset Sieg. Wright gegen McMichael ist dann wieder nichts besonderes und eher zum Runterkommen. Jacqueline gegen Disco ist zwar keine wrestlerische Offenbarung aber besonders die Darstellung von Jacqueline besser als erwartet, auch wenn dieses "Disco schlägt sie nicht und rennt weg weil sie eine Frau ist" ein bisschen übertrieben war. Beide Matches danach sind etwas in die Länge gezogen, obwohl ich Flair gegen Hennig vor Allem technisch noch etwas besser finde, wobei Luger gegen Hall vor Allem von der Geschichte um Zbyszko lebt. Das Sudden Death Match ist dann ein anstädiger Brawl durch die Halle, der auch die Dekoration gut mit einbezieht. Das ME ist dann irgendwie verwirrend mit den ganzen Stings und dem "Fan" am Ende. Insgesamt ein Event, dass ein absolutes Weltklassematch und noch zwei richtig gute Matches hat, dass für mich aber durch das Main Event nicht mehr gut sein kann sondern nur sehr anständig und daher 7 Punkte. |

Ein Sieg des Drachen über Nagata käme verfrüht, dennoch ist die Partie recht deutlich, wenngleich in Ordnung so. Das unangekündigte Match zwischen Jericho und Gedo bildet nur eine Überbrückung hin zum WCW MOTY-Kandidaten zwischen Rey und Eddie. Alleine dieses Match besorgt dem Event einen Sonderpunkt. Leider geht es nicht auf diesem Niveau weiter, denn während der Showdown zwischen Luger und Hall und auch das solide Sudden-Death Match noch recht okay sind, stinkt die Show mit dem Intergender-Match insbesondere, aber auch mit der verkrampften Leistung zwischen Wright und McMichael und dem grotesk ausgebremsten US-Titelmatch ordentlich ab. Gerade wenn man sich das Loser-Leaves-Town Match aus der WWF 1993 ins Gedächtnis ruft, muss man sich fragen, warum man dieses Match zwischen Flair und Perfect hier so kaputt präsentiert. Zum Mainer fällt einem nicht viel ein - der Käfig ist deutlich höher als das Niveau und die beiden hüftsteifen Oldies versaubeuteln den Gesamteindruck der Show ordentlich. Hogan verteidigt auch nicht den Titel, sondern gönnt Piper nur das, was nicht wichtig ist. Die Fan-Interference am Ende ist dann fast schon interessanter, als der dann doch noch vermöbelte Schotte. Denn wer will schon jemand anderen als die nWo jubeln sehen? Eine Show mit Höhen und Tiefen, einem fetten Ausrufezeichen und einer peinlichen letzten halben Stunde. Ich kann die Begeisterung über den Gesamteindruck hier wahrlich nicht teilen. |

Warum nicht um den Titel. Da ist der Champ einmal da und der Titel wird nicht verteidigt. Dazu die Sache mit den Stings. Was aber eine nette Idee war. PPV war in Ordnung. Sicher einer der besseren WCW PPVs in diesem Jahr, auch wenn das ein oder andere bescheuerte Finish dabei war. Mit Guerrero/Mysterio vlt. das WCW Match des Jahres. |
| 45 | 21.07.2017 | HudE | 7.0 | Alles in allem ein guter PPV, auch wenn Hogan und Piper am Ende nochmal ihr möglichstes gegeben haben, um diesen PPV runterzuziehen. Nagata vs. Ultimo Dragon ist für die kurze Zeit ein überraschend guter Opener und macht Lust auf mehr, was man von Jericho vs. Gedo nicht unbedingt behaupten kann, weil Gedo teilweise unglaublich schlampig geworkt hat, eine Katastrophe war es aber auch nicht. Eddie vs. Mysterio ist wie schon viele erwähnt haben ein absoluter Showstealer und rein wrestlerisch für mich das beste Match in diesem Jahr gewesen im US-Wrestling. Wright vs. McMichael fand ich dann gerade noch so in Ordnung, das Finish jedoch war zum Haare raufen, da Goldberg durch sein Rumgebrülle und durch seinen dämlichen Run-In es mehr oder weniger unmöglich gemacht hat für Robinson ihn nicht zu bemerken. Der Typ war zu diesem Zeitpunkt "green as hell" wie man so schön sagt. Inferno vs. Jacquline war ziemlich schlecht und natürlich tolles Booking, um seinen Champion lächerlich zu machen. Hennig vs. Flair und Hall vs. Luger waren zwar keine Kracher, aber durchaus Matches die man sich anschauen kann und beide Matches hatten ungefähr die Finishes, die man hier erwarten konnte. Das Sudden Death Match war ein starker Brawl, wie fast alle Matches von DDP und Savage, jedoch hätte es hier endlich mal ein cleanes Finish geben müssen. Es war trotzdem spannend bis zum Ende und abgesehen davon gut gebookt, was man von dem Main Event überhaupt nicht behaupten kann, das war nämlich rundum eine Katastrophe. Das Wrestling war schlecht, die Zuschauer sind irgendwann nach den ersten paar Minuten eingeschlafen, was man keinem verübeln kann und das Gimmick des Matches wurde komplett lächerlich gemacht dadurch, dass sie einfach rausspaziert sind und am Ende legt sich Hogan auch noch für Piper hin, was in dem Fall keinem was gebracht hat. Das ist dann zum Ende des PPV's eine ziemlich bittere Pille, obwohl der Rest des PPV's bis auf das Disco Inferno Match überzeugen konnte. |

Nagata/Dragon is a great opener, really enjoyed it, but it crashes badly in an incredibly boring Jericho/Gedo match. Gedo is clearly better as a booker than a wrestler, and Jericho was still a painfully bland babyface and didn't really have the pieces put together yet. Of course the most famous match of the event is the Mysterio/Eddie conflict which rightly holds claim as being one of the best matches in WCW history, superb contest. Wright/McMichael is an ok match and has an angle that looks strange in hindsight, with Goldberg interfering and acting very heelish. The event really bombs out with a painfully bad Jacqueline/Disco match. I am a fan of intergender matches done well but this was the farthest thing from, the entire thing is Disco wussing out and crying that he can't hit a woman, even though Jacqueline is about 10 times tougher than he is. If they had played it up like it was Disco's excuse that's one thing, but they didn't know what they wanted to do, and the result is awful. Luger/Hall is an ok bout but these two are capable of much more. Savage/DDP is a great match rounding out their feud, but sadly the main event sends us back into horrible territory. Slow motion brawling, and 9 fake Stings appearing, and the bizarre event of a fan getting in the cage and being treated as part of the match. Good event mostly but not totally. |

Jericho vs Gedo ist da deutlich schwächer, aber immer noch ein anschaubares Match. Das Match um den Cruiserweight Titel zwischen Eddie und Rey Misterio ist dann ganz klar das MotN und vielleicht sogar das beste WCW-Match des Jahres. Hier stimmte eigentlich alles: klasse High-Flying Aktionen und eine Menge Spannung. Die beiden folgenden Matches hören sich nicht nur von der Besetzung schlecht an, sie waren es auch. Disco Inferno wurde durch dieses Schauspiel komplett zerstört und der Eingriff Goldbergs gegen Mongo gehört wohl zu dem lächerlichsten was ich bisher gesehen habe. Das US-Titelmatch war eigentlich ganz ordentlich. Henning und Flair zeigen, dass zwei alte Recken immer noch was auf dem Kasten haben. Leider wird das blöde DQ-Finish dem Match in keinster Weise gerecht. Luger vs Hall war auch überwiegend solide nur das ständige Eingegreife der nWo störte natürlich und führte ja auch zunächst zum Finish. Die Sache mit dem Replay ist natürlich komplett bescheuert, da ansonsten ja nie wieder ein Heel unfair gewinnen könnte wenn man das immer so machen würde. Savage vs DDP war dann das dritte gute Match des Abends. Naja. gut ist etwas übertrieben, aber es war unterhaltsam. Der Main Event war der übliche Hogan Blödsinn. Was mich am meisten daran gestört hat ist die Tatsache, dass Hogan der Ober-Egomane war, aber sich ausgerechnet für den ebenfalls uralten und komplett überflüssigen Pieper dreimal hingelegt hat. Was ein Schwachsinn! Insgesamt bleibt eine durchwachsene, aber für WCW-Verhältnisse zu dieser Zeit noch durchaus ansehnliche Show. |

Alex Wright vs. Steve McMichael was the low point of the show, however I can't help to laugh when the ref is distracted and they fall into him, then he looks as there is outside interference, but pretends not to notice. I won't judge it too bad for giving me a laugh. Jacqueline vs. Disco Inferno was actually good enough to watch. Curt Hennig and Ric Flair had a good old fashioned hard-hitting grudge match. Piper and Hogan was decent enough. The end of it resembled something you would have seen from ECW. Yuji Nagata/Ultimo Dragon and Savage/Page were both excellent matches. Rey Mysterio Jr. and Eddie Guerrero stole the show and put on a 5 star match. It is one of the best matches of all time! This PPV is a must see just for this match alone. A very good 7 of 10 for the show. |

Jericho und Gedo bieten auch ein cooles Match, allerdings Y2J mit einem üblen Up-Fuck, Sieg mit Boston Crab ohne Beinbearbeitung, 6/10. Dann aber das MOTY 1997, 10/10. Wright und McMichael ist entsetzlich langweilig, der Ref sieht Goldberg, dreht sich wieder zu Debra, Idiot, 0/10. Das nächste Match ist nicht viel besser, 2/10. Flair und Hennig mit Bein- vs. Beinbearbeitung, kann durchaus überzeugen, ist aber nichts besonderes, 6/10. Luger und Hall hatte ich von früher bei der WCW schlechter in Erinnerung, ging sogar voll in Ordnung, 6/10. Zu DDP vs. Macho Man mehr im Guide, 8/10. Mainer danach relativ langweilig, kaum Bezug auf den Käfig, abgesehen vom Finish, das dann widerum sehr cool gemacht war, 6/10. Insgesamt kein besonders guter Event, wobei ein definitives Must See dabei ist, in Summe 7 Punkte. |

Lediglich beim Main Event bin ich mir nicht ganz sicher, was WCW sich da eigentlich genau gedacht hat, als man das Match vorbereitet hat. Das wirkte alles irgendwie recht chaotisch und etwas sinnfrei, aber dennoch irgendwie unterhaltend. |
