[5.0] "Zum dritten Mal innerhalb der vergangenen knapp 365 Tagen veranstalten NWA bzw. WWF mit WrestleMania früher im Jahr einen Event an mehreren Standorten, retrospektiv gesprochen zum Glück auch zum letzten Mal in ähnlicher Zeitspanne. So sehr das Konzept seiner Zeit voraus gewesen ist, umso erschöpfender fühlt's sich manchmal an und das ließ sich die Show doch sehr anmerken. Der Opener ein erster Richtpfeiler, **1/2 bei absteigender Tendenz. Ein Time Limit Draw ist stilistisch gesehen immer machbar, nur habe ich mit einem solchen an erster Position einer örtlichen Matchcard dann doch ein bisschen was dagegen. Hinzu kam, dass 15 Minuten trotz beider ringerischer Fähigkeiten viel zu viel waren. In etwa gleichem Niveau entsprach der United States Tag Team Titelkampf, **1/2 ebenfalls. The Russians weiterhin mit gutem Brawling, Kansas Jayhawks entgegen meiner Erwartungen anständig tatsächlich - Bill Dundee in seinem einzig echten PPV-Auftritt wiederum kein Mann von Werk, **1/4 um den Dreh und das nur dank Sam Houston's überzeugender Form. Kein Vergleich zu Dundee ist Big Bubba Rogers im Louisville Street Fight, ein gescheiter Bruiser mit einem kompatiblem Manager in Jim Cornette. Cornette aber bleib an diesem Abend lediglich wegen seinem Bump nach dem darauffolgenden Scaffold Tag Match im Gedächtnis, **3/4 um den Dreh bzw. *3/4 im Fall vom örtlichen Co-Main Event. Insgesamt aber bleibt auch vom Scaffold Match selbst nicht mehr als eben jener schiefgegangener Bump in Erinnerung, viel mehr passierte da nämlich nicht. Nach jenem Tiefflug aber flog man zu höchsten Höhen der Veranstaltung, ***1/4. Flair vs. Koloff im Main Event meiner Meinung nach mit Abstand das Highlight; Flair ein Naturtalent in Sachen schmutziger Tricks, Nikita Koloff übertraf Rogers in Sachen Brawling nochmal und auch sonst ging das über knapp 20 Minuten gut runter, lediglich das Finish bestehend aus einer Disqualifikation und einem sich entleerenden Locker Room war nicht von Nöten gewesen, das allerdings kann man im Vergleich zu ein paar anderer Entscheidungen an dem Abend verkraften."
[3.0] "Halle 1 und 2 zusammen, weil es halt auch so übertragen wurde: auch wenn man die Doppelhallen-Option des Vorjahres relativ gelungen wiederholt, so kackt diese Show im Vergleich zu 1985 echt amtlich ab. Es gibt leider viel zu viel uninteressanten Blödsinn in Under- und Midcard, als dass man sagen könnte, dass die Zuschauer da wirklich und authentisch mitgehen. Am Ende gibt es wirklich nur drei auffällige Matches, nämlich den bescheiden strukturierten Mainer, den seltsamen Titelverlust von Dusty Rhodes und das Tag-Match im Stahlkäfig als klares MOTN. Aber das ist echt nur eine Wunderkerze am Silvesterabend. Die Show ist zu schwach."
[5.0] "This time I'm just treating it as one show because I feel it fits better and will give both the cards making up Starrcade 1986 a 5. This was a pretty meh show with some highlights here and there."
[6.0] "The lesser half of the show but I still enjoyed it. The main event was excellent and I loved Garvin vs. Bubba. Nice to see Brad Armstrong get time for once."
[2.0] "The main event was never gonna succeed given the circumstances but nothing else was good either. Scaffold matches are not a good gimmick because it's restrictive for the wrestlers. Starrcade was not working the way it should have considering it's name & legacy."
[5.0] "Difficult to review this show since its split into two parts, but I'll put each review where its supposed to be. This portion of the show was fairly decent. Half of the matches were of interest and the rest of the card was just there. The opening match was surprisingly fun considering the two men involved. I found it to be a solid opener for this section of the show. The next three matches were OK at best. Dundee vs. Houston could have been good but failed to live up to any sort of expectations. The other two were just not interesting enough to invest in. Scaffold match was fun for what it was, but these kind of gimmick matches don't age well. For its time, this was an exciting match and the crowd sure loved it. The story surrounding the main event was heartbreaking, but I think a different challenger may have posed a bigger threat to Flair. Koloff was solid but the initial challenger, Magnum TA, would have given us a better performance. Regardless, I felt Koloff played his role well and the crowd sure enjoyed it, even if it was obvious the title wouldn't change hands. The finish was surprisingly solid and I liked the aftermath. All in all, it was a fairly good match that served its purpose well, considering everything. Another two-location Starrcade, an alright card and decent action for at least one of the locations."
[6.0] "As always, it's odd rating one of these 80s dual-location PPVs split, but we'll do our best. Not an especially good card. The presentation is definitely rocky, with subpar commentary, matches just seeming to happen for no well-defined reason, and yet at the same time lengthy recaps and hype packages for unrelated shows and matches that grind everything to a halt. The Omni probably got the better card of both arenas, to be honest. The Armstrong-Garvin draw was surprisingly entertaining, and from there we went into a decent tag team match with the Russians. The Central States title match was an annoying nothing match with a bad ending, but from there it's back onto a hot streak with a very good street fight and the sloppy and worrying spectacle that is the Scaffold Match, which isn't much in terms of wrestling, but is very fun to watch at least once just to see it. Add on a good if not great Ric Flair title match to end the show, and you have a more satisfying card to watch through, if still tugged down by those production snafus and some subpar finishes."
[5.0] "Terrible commentary all through out, Terrible build up to all matches, gone backwards, completely amaeteur and laughable in occasions. Both main events, Flair and Koloff and the tag team cage match saved this event from being a disaster"
[6.0] "The opening match for the version I was watching was the Louisville Street Fight. Pinfall, submission or 10-count TKO win it here. Rogers is the late Ray Traylor who went on to become the Big Bossman in the WWE. At this point, he? s just a green monster who no-sells a lot. Think Samoa Joe if Joe was a redneck. Inventive finish, disappointing match. * The pre-main event is the Scaffold Match: The Road Warriors vs. The Midnight Express. There? s not a lot they can do with this match. They crawl around and hit each other carefully, so as not to lose their balance. The Midnights toss powder in the Roadies eyes to blind them. Hawk nearly goes over but hangs on to a poorly-fastened rail. Eaton grabs on to his leg and swings to safety. They all wind up under the walkway and start chicken-fighting. The Midnights don? t last long after that. There goes Condrey. There goes Eaton. The Roadies win at 7:08. Ellering chases Cornette to the top. Cornette tries to crawl under the walkway and falls to the ring where Bubba was supposed to catch him. Instead, Bubba misjudged his fall, and Cornette screwed up his knees pretty badly. *1/2 And finally, it's time for the main event. NWA Heavyweight Title: Ric Flair vs. Nikita Koloff. Flair retains in what would be a better finish if it weren? t the biggest show of the year. Good stuff from Flair, though. *** Anything involving the Horsemen was interesting (not surprising), but everything else was a miss. The scaffold match, while an interesting concept and legendary match, was a waste of the Midnights' talents. The hair match was just atrocious, and the rest had screwy finishes. Although it does give you a nice, nostalgic feel, there's really not much to recommend that you can't find elsewhere. Mild thumbs down."
[5.0] "Der Opener war nichts schlecht aber halt auch nicht gut sondern einfach nichts besonderes. Ähnliches kann man danach dann auch über das Tag Title Match sagen. Anständiges Gebrawle, gegen Ende dann noch der Stipulation gerecht geworden auch mit dem Finish aber zwischendrin war man mit den Regeln da auch nicht immer hundertprozentig konsequent. Houston gegen Dundee hat passable technische Ansätze mit Dropkicks und Armdrags und auch anständiges Selling, hat aber halt nicht besonders viel Spannung oder Emotion und das Finish ist auch streitbar - wie so manche an diesem Abend. Das mit dem Finish gilt auch für Rogers gegen Garvin, welches wiederum durchaus Emotion und Stimmung rüberbrachte aber insgesamt genauso wie das davor durchschnittlich war, in diesem Fall weil wrestlerisch nichts besonders war. Das Scaffold Match war halt etwas zurückgenommenes Brawling aufgrund des wackligen Untergrund mit ganz okayer Finishingsequenz aber auch nicht mehr als ausreichend. Das ME war dann auch hier klar MOTN mit dem Monster Koloff das Flair clever outsmartete aber auch durch sein Selling unglaublich gut aussehen ließ. Alles in Allem sehr ähnlich wie die Parallelveranstaltung. Ein mehr als anständiges ME und der Rest ist so meh. Wrestlerisch vielleicht einen kleinen Tick besser, dafür waren die Finishes hier doch etwas wild, sodass ich es insgesamt als völlig gleichwertige Show sehe und daher auch 5 Punkte gebe."
[5.0] "In meinen Augen etwas besser als die Show in Greensboro, guter Start der Show mit Armstrong und Garvin, das zweite Match war auch in Ordnung, Dundee gegen Houston war nicht mein Fall. Garvin gegen Big Bubba hatte irgendwie schon etwas. Das Scaffold Match fand ich geil, die Umsetzung war super und das war ja, insbesondere bei dem wackligen Absperrungen oben, nicht ganz ohne Risiko. Der Main Event fing gut an, mittendrin schien die Luft irgendwie heraus gewesen zu sein und am Ende flacht es durch das Finish total ab, schade, da hätte man mehr draus machen können und Nikita Koloff konnte durchaus etwas im Ring."
[8.0] "Brad Armstrong vs Jimmy Garvin - 8/10 Ivan Koloff/Krusher Kruschev vs. Bobby Jaggers/Dutch Mantel - 7/10 Sam Houston vs. Bill Dundee - 7/10 Big Bubba Rogers vs. Ronnie Garvin - 8/10 - Really enjoyed this because of the criminally underrated (pre) Big Boss Man. Road Warriors (Hawk/Animal) vs. Bobby Eaton/Dennis Condrey - 8/10 - It's probably not that exciting technically. Ric Flair vs. Nikita Koloff - 9/10 *Rating this particular portion an 8/10 but the overall Starrcade a 7. *"
[6.0] "The best of the two parts of the event. Ric Flair vs Koloff is the best match, but some of them are interesting for the different Wrestling styles. Rogers vs Galvin is more than okay. The Scaffold match is probably out of place and booked bad. This part is satisfying for old school fans."
[5.0] "1. Hier hat mich der Opener positiv überrascht. Beide zeigen ein mehr als anständiges Match. Leider der übliche Ausgang. (3*) 2. Russians gegen die Jayhawks war okay. (2 1/2*) 3. Houston gegen Dundee war okay. (2 1/4*) 4. Der Street Fight war eine positive Überraschung. Hier ging es ziemlich hart her. Nur eben wieder ein bescheuertes Finish. (3 1/4*) 5. Das TT Match war Schrott. Eine Frechheit ein solches Geklammere & Geschubse zu zeigen & es dann auch noch so abzufeiern. (-***) 6. ME war okay, aber sicher keine 4-Sterne. Ähnlich bei Starrcade 84 gibt es auch hier ein enttäuschendes Ende. Man stelle sich vor man würde bei WM sowas bringen. (3 1/4*) Im Großen & Ganzen war Starrcade eindeutig besser als WM2. Obwohl man mit dem Scaffold Match eines der größten Schrottmatches ever zeigte, wurde es eigentlich nie Langweilig sodass man abschalten wollte. Trotzdem eher Durchschnitt."
[6.0] "Bewertung bezieht sich auf den gesamten Event (Halle 1 und 2). Meine Highlights hier waren das Match zwischen Rogers und Garvin und der Main Event. Das Scaffold Match kann man sich aus historischen Bullshit-Gründen ansehen."
[7.0] "Schönes Matwrestling im Opener, ein paar Längen sind aber drin (7/10). Beim anschließenden Tag Team Match ist eigentlich nur die Leistung von Hector Guerrero ansehnlich (5/10). Das US Tag Title Match war ein gepflegter Brawl, leider kam die Stipulation erst beim Finish zum Tragen (6/10). Großes Wrestling kann man sicher auch von einem Strap Match nicht erwarten, ich fand es aber schon recht spannend und unterhaltsam (7/10). Houston vs. Dundee ist zumindest gut, wenn Houston am Drücker ist (7/10), Hair vs. Hair kann man vergessen, einzig die Post-Match-Szenen sorgen hier für etwas Unterhaltung (5/10). Sowohl der Street Fight (9/10) als auch das First Blood (7/10) bestechen weniger durchs Wrestling als vielmehr durch tolles Booking, besonders die Finishsequenzen sind in beiden Matches sehr gut gelungen. Mit Scaffold Matches hab ich ja traditionell immer meine Probleme, aber dieses hier war wirklich sehr spannend und man konnte gut über die Schwierigkeiten, die mit der Stipulation einhergehen, hinwegbooken (9/10). Dann begibt man sich auch wrestlerisch auf hohes Niveau mit den Andersons vs. R’n’R Express, nur das Finish war schwach (9/10), im Main Event hat dann alles gepasst, toller Aufbau, leider kein klarer Sieger, aber irgendwie war damit auch zu rechnen (10/10). Gesamt: 7, 36."
[8.0] "Neben dem super Match zwischen Ric Flair und Nikita Koloff überzeugte mich zu großen Teilen auch noch Big Bubba Rogers vs Rugged Ronnie Garvin! Der Louisville Streetfight war recht ordentlich! Als Fazit musste man nach diesem Jahr ganz klar sagen, dass die NWA/WCW gegenüber der Federation in Sachen PPVs noch deutlich überlegen war!"
