In this case, though still contrivances, these moments were intelligently, creatively constructed and expertly applied to maximize drama. In most cases, the third man getting removed was a big (and bloody) deal, and their reappearance tying directly into a huge nearfall. Chris Benoit was the focus of the match. Naturally, the action was at its best when he was active, and the story was his big comeback to finally capture the biggest title in the sport. For what they were doing, this match could not have been plotted and executed more perfectly, and it truly deserves its status as an American pro-wrestling classic. By the way, Shawn Michaels' juicing was one of the finest crimson masks you'll ever see. |

Benoit would go on to tarnish his name and legacy and should rightly so be considered a monster but this match, as a wrestling match, is everything. |

The greatest Wrestlemania main event that no one's supposed to talk about, but god damn is this match just perfection. Don't see a point in breaking this down spot by spot, but man the table spot was kickass, Shawn standing in the ring bloody and beaten but still having enough strength to goad HHH. Benoit, being the guy no one expected to ever be in this spot but everyone wanted to cheer for, finally getting that Wrestlemania moment after everything looked lost and HHH was about to sneak out w the title one more time. Something about that image of Benoit crouching with the title in his face, sobbing his heart out has stuck with me more than perhaps any other moment in wrestling history The celebration with Eddie is just that tragic cherry on top. I would give this match over a 10/10 if I could, I seriously can't find many flaws here. |

Despite WHC title on the line and the third participant, match was centred around rivarly between HHH and HBK who tried to eliminate Benoit from their business, but eventually that didn't occur. Devastating battle with stiff chops, suplexes, springboard moves and submissions - literally everything happened here. Post-match JR emotional speech and Benoit's in-ring interaction with Eddie Guerrero would land in WWE's legacy book for forever, but obvious circumstances erased this match from history. |

41 | 13.04.2025 | trexyyy | 10.0 | My personal favorite Wrestlemania match, it has everything. Separating the art from the artist, Benoit was truly a "blink and you miss him" wrestler, a one of a kind if you will. His in-ring ability was tremendous, his vast array of submission holds and overall talent makes him one of the greats of his time. Then again, his actions cannot be forgiven or forgotten, he still did what he did and there is (unfortunately) no way of changing that. I am truly confident in saying that Benoit would have been inducted into the HoF had he not done what he did. He was incredibly over with this crowd and that celebration after was something special. One of the all time greatest matches at WM, and it's a shame it will never be truly acknowledged by WWE again. |

44 | 11.04.2025 | Gerdo | 10.0 | Just like everyone else, I think that Benoit acts can not be forgiven and it's normal to think about those when you see his matches, just like you think about Eddie's death while you're watching his contests. With this said, when you focus on this you can't not appreciate the spectacular triple threat they put on in the main event of WM 20. Perhaps the greatest main event in WM history, surely if you exclusively look to his in-ring action. They perfectly alternated, never stopped ang put an enormous effort. There are no mistakes, everything flows in a perfect way. The near falls are well executed and the moment when HHH and HBK joined forces to get Benoit out of the way was perfect. The final sequence was perfect too, an outstanding ending to an outstanding main event. The underdog conquered the World Heavyweight Championship by overcoming the greatest wrestlers in WWE, and the satisfaction in perfectly represented in the storytelling, in the end you are truly happy for Benoit and his fantastic win. Magic. |

53 | 28.03.2025 | davidthemark | 10.0 | What Benoit did in June 2007 robbed so much from the world. Most importantly, he robbed his young son and wife of their lives, their future and what they could have given to the world. In the world of wrestling, he robbed fans of the opportunity to ever appreciate his matches the way they did when they were wrestled. Having started watching wrestling on the other side of the tragedy, I can never watch any of Benoit's matches without having the thought in my mind that, in the not too distant future from whenever he wrestled, he would do something so evil and heinous. The specter of that evil resonates back, and I struggle to divorce Benoit the wrestler with Benoit the murderer. There is probably no clearer case of this than the Wrestlemania XX Triple Threat Main Event. If we were to divorce this match from the context of everything that came after, this is maybe the greatest Wrestlemania main event ever, at least in the top 3. All 3 workers, Michaels, Helmsley, and Benoit, were firing on all cylinders, and delivered a match with an intoxicating mixture of violence and technical mastery. The ending of the match, and the celebration that followed with Eddie Guerrero and then Benoit's family, were immediately such iconic images in the canon of Wrestlemania. Within three and a half years, the images became perhaps the most haunting in the sport. This match will never make its way into the list of top Wrestlemania matches WWE is compiling, its reputation can never be acknowledged by the promotion thanks to the utter selfishness and depravity of its victor. Even still, WWE essentially tried to emulate the spirit of this match ten years later at Wrestlemania XXX, perhaps to make up for the sour taste that was now in everyone's mouth and try to give fans good, untainted memories of an underdog Wrestlemania triple threat main event winner. That fact alone speaks to the impact and quality of the match. |

65 | 11.03.2025 | charlierosegold | | The match was good. Nancy Benoit never gets her flowers. What her husband did to her is too overshadowing, too cruel, for her to really be given the coverage she deserved. Nancy Benoit's list of managed wrestlers reads as a who's who of the alternate wrestling scene of the late 80's/early 90's. In her short time in WCW, she was attached to both Kevin Sullivan and Ric Flair, accompanying the Four Horsemen to the ring. More well known for her time in ECW, she was partnered with Sandman and was well known for attacking his rivals with his signature singapore cane. Because wrestling hates women, she was called Woman. Because wrestling hates women, she was paired off with Chris Benoit in an adultery angle in WCW. Because wrestling hates women, she's a victim and not a talent. Her last wrestling appearance was in 1997, and her exit was never given any explanation or denouement. A thirteen-year career ended and was barely mentioned again on TV until what happened happened. She was seen as an expendable commodity by an industry that spits out flesh and bones, but she got out with her health and her family, until she didn't. Her husband, her murderer, is seen as a technical wrestling icon. Some can separate Wrestlemania XX's main event, or any other match of his, from what he did. Wrestlemania XX's main event is a masterful grappling contest, and a showcase for how submission wrestling can be used in a compelling babyface performance. It is also 1198 days before Nancy Benoit's body was found, a time when she was alive, filing for divorce and a restraining order against her husband. When she died, she was only 43. After Nancy was killed, Hustler magazine published nude photos of her. WWE isn't right about many things, but scrubbing Chris Benoit from the history books is the correct move. Nancy Benoit deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame, but her ghost looms too large to ever put her in. In an industry of murderers, rapists, bigots and thieves, she deserves that much at least. |
66 | 09.03.2025 | EyeSocketCrunch | 9.0 | Hovers around "good" until Shawn starts gushing blood and it rockets towards "amazing". Benoit is the best worker in the room and puts on an amazing underdog performance as Paul and Michaels tower over him and have the advantage, he slips in and takes the victory through pure strength. Post match angle with Eddie is a tearjerker. |

HBK and Benoit had unbelievable chemistry with each other and their matches around this time always delivered. And while HHH/HBK matches can be hit or miss for me, they were great together here. Almost a surreal feeling that night, because up until this point it didn't feel like 'guys like Benoit and Eddie' could be world champions. Like I don't think anyone would've been shocked if this match ended with Triple H winning via pedigree, which made it all the more satisfying when that wasn't the result. And then the celebration, of course, is legendary. |
